Whoaa!! I don't know what manual you are referring to but in my KTM manual, the recommended oil for an 03 KTM 200 EXC is in fact EP 80 weight (Shell and not doubt other brands) - yes, good old fashioned stinky gearbox oil you'd put into a car diff!
The best thing is that it's relatively cheap, at least when compared to oils made in Europe with pictures of motorcycles on the front of the bottle.
My 2003 KTM manual says 20W40 (Shell Advance VSX4) for the 125/200 SX and 80W (Shell Gear EP80) for the 125/200 EXC. Those two viscosity numbers are different ways to measure the same thing based on the intended application, so are equivalent. Indeed Motorex is now badging the Gear Oil as SAE 10W/30 with a specification of API GL-4 SAE 80W/85 !!
So pretty much any 4T engine oil or gear oil is OK; despite the difference listed in my edition of the manual, they are specified pretty much interchangeably. IIRC the only things to avoid are engine oils with "friction modifiers" and "hypoid" gear oils... i.e. the stuff you'd put in your diff.
Cheers,
Colin

They are basically the same but measured on two different scales. The old straight scale for the 80w and the later SAE scale for the 10w 50 oils. And as long as you have gl4 or gl3 its for gearboxs. The only thing you will get with car oils is all the additives they put in for cars. Although when I was Karting I did have a Castrol Scientist admit to me, alot of the oils are the same just packaged differently to target different markets.
ATF is just a very light oil still does the same thing. The only reason we as MXer's need to change our oils more regularly is because we have the clutch contaminating the oil with fibres and aluminium particles. Going to steel clutch plates helps with oil preservation greatly as well. It won't go black 1/2 as fast.

As the others have (hopefully) explained, it ain't just numbers...
My Manual says 2004 KTM200EXC on the front cover & it's a nice katoom orange colour, obviously there are different things printed in different manuals.
As regards lubricants, I'm conservative and use factory specified stuff, I've only got to look at the cost of a rebuild to see it as cheap insurance.
got hold of KTM workshop today.Had good yak with mechanic.Have got 4litres of Motul transoil heading my way.Oil is cheap ,gearbox's are not .....![]()
you mean Motul 2T transoil?
