I ride one simply because thats what my budget can afford at the moment still far more bike than what i need so im happy
I say 2T's are the way to go for people wanting to participate at there own costs

Even on the old ones if you dont race serious and you wanna just go do the odd club day and smoke everyone on a big old 5hundy it great and if you get beaten you have a handful of excuses
Blacksmith, it's funny how in '04 the KX500 did'nt even appear on the model line-up brochure, like they were'nt proud enough to advertise it. I only got mine cos my dealer told me there's two coming to the South Island and ...would I like one ? Of course I said yes and traded my '97 KX5 for about 3k less than I paid.......and that was gone before 11 am the next day after I dropped it off when I visited the shop to pay my $ and say sionara to the old girl, already sold and despatched.
If you got a 500...give it a kiss. They're gold. I was told the other '04 went to Timaru.
My 1980 PE175 still gives me thrills.
2T for meee![]()
About 10 or 15 years ago, when reading what was coming up with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in the good old USA, I made a mental note "Must buy me a good 2 stroke and a 44 gallon drum of oil before they are extinct".
Better start lookin I guess......................
"If you haven't grown up by the time you turn 50, you don't have to!"
I also have a 2 stroke. Have had a smattering of 2 and 4 stroke off road bikes over the years. My YZ250F (03) was the better motocrosser but my current KDX200 is a far better trail bike.
Yeh I think you have hit the nail on the head there!
When you race MX, if it costs to go faster, so what, you want to win, so you pay and you go faster. There's no doubt the 4's deliver their power smoother, the results speak for themselves, its faster.
But I still reckon between Pipe design, gearing, fly wheel weight, power valve timing, ignition timing and compression you can get a 2 smoker pretty close! Looks like we now might have electronic ignition as well! They just haven't put the effort in from the factory. Might not deliver as much top end power as what we ride now but I bet 2smokers can be made more linear like a 4T.
But, it just makes much more economic sense in revenue for the factory and the dealer network in parts and maintenance to go 4 stroke.
My 0.02c
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!
'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '
Reckless, well spoken.....
Go the four strokes and, politics aside I'm still surprised by the short-sightedness at the abruptness at cutting the 2-strokes loose. Bloody shame, even my big KX is a good T- Bike albeit with around 70 at the crank....hehe

Fucken Ae!!! Long live the 2 strokes.
I would love to ride a KX or CR500 one day, just to feel the inital bite of torque and power. Mainly torque.
I memba riding my Cousins worked YZ250 for the first time. It was bloody amazing.
The 125GP bikes have pretty decent power hits too (I race one, im lucky)
the thing that confuses me about the usa and their pollution stuff is from what i see on tv a lot of americans appear to still drive 1980's large carbed engined heap of shit cars as their daily vehicle. which id assume would pump out a fair bit of pollution, vs say a 250cc 2stroke, which ill admit smoke a bit, but its a 250cc vs a 5000cc, and most bikes on average would only get ridden 1 hour a week, whats 1 hour of 250cc going to do vs 10 hours a week of 5000cc
or the dirty factorys as pointed out.
and who even said global warming existed in the first place?
Yeah and not only do they ALL drive large cars, they drive them around alone too... So you'll see twice as many cars on the road than what need to be
