    Blackbird riders in Wellington

    Hi folks,

I'm looking to change bikes soon and am considering going for a Blackbird. Are there any Blackbird owners in Wellington that wouldn't mind me having a look at their bike and picking their brains about the whole ownership experience?

There aren't any for sale in any of the wellington bike shops so it's impossible to have a close look at one and just sit on it for getting an idea of size etc.

I like to pick the make/model of car or bike that I want then go looking for the right one and the right deal so this would just help me make that decision.

Any assistance would be absolutely fantastic.

PM Freebird, he's a close friend of mine. He has years of experience with Blackbirds and lives up at Paremata. They're built like brick shipyards and the motor will last you 200,000 miles plus, provided you use a good oil. Pre-2002 models occasionally gave trouble with the reg/rec and alternator but not expensive to fix permanently. Cam chain tensioner requires replacing at ~60000 km but takes less than an hour. PM me if you want a list of "essential" mods.

My 99' Bird has just clicked over 100,000 kms of which I have done 55000km myself & still love taking her out whenever I can, where ever I like. There are some must have additions if you ride over long distances ( 700+ kms ) just the same if you ride through the winter months ( heated grips ) either way there is a wealth of info here & also on WWW.cbrxx.com. Test riding is your best option as well as some helpfull advise...... ENJOY!!!!!!

Price is probably about right or even a touch high. 1997 - first year the 'bird was introduced and is pre-fuel injection. Notice that it has a gold rear sprocket - not standard. Owner not keeping up a proper lube schedule at 29000 km? Also has a 4:1 aftermarket exhaust - why? I know that's being anal but those are the tell-tale signs I'd be looking for when buying. The small indicators, not whether the paint is in good nick. There again, I'm a cynical bastard .
