Someone needs to go into business trading cheapie bikes and vans like this for tourists. I'd do it, but I'm broke coz I'm busy spending money on bikes and vans.. LOL

is there a medium term? Ill still keep using it after the trip etc but once again who knows, I want something decent and comfortably and can carry panniers well etc and has some grunt but at a good cost and can re sell if need be as a contingency plan, very well. for the money Im still thinking that F650 GS looks the deal, but I am open to sugggestions.

Depends if its just the Beemer that you are interested in.

There are other 650 bikes like the v-strom 650 or the Transalp that will do the job very nicly indeed.

They have the added benefit of being cheaper and fairly easy to on-sell when you have finished with them - probably for close to what you paid for them.

Also - with difference between the 650 / 1200 - I would have thought for NZ would have been the better bike would have been the smaller one (assuming that you are not 2-uping). Ive got a v-strom 1000 but would have got the 650 if I didn't land such a good deal on the 1k. NZ's roads don't need the bigger bike, and the bigger bike will be much harder to handle if you decide to go off road.

Either way - sounds like a awesome adventure - keep posting and I'm sure you will be able to get KB accommodation almost everywhere!

Agreed. I'm very fond of BMW but if I was planning your type of trip the choice would be a common easy-to-get-parts bike like a Transalp. The VStrom 650 would be the top pick.

Mind you, if you really want a BMW then go for it. We need our passions, forget about logic.

fuck yea.. ride what you'll remember.. as part of your camera so should be the bike..... and i'm sure that there are some true motorcyclist's here...that would assist with holding an selling for you....your bike...

No. If you had of read correctly you would find that I am now in the position to buy something of worth in terms of a BMW F650 GS OR R1200 if one comes along for the right price. I dont need to buy riding gear, all I need is a new GPS and cradle for the iPhone and Im away. I had planned on a XR400 since Ive onwed a few but now, like you might have seen I can now think about getting something a little more up there, so there is no need to be confused or watch with any intrigued interest.

hmmm your tempting me to do so, you should be a salesman if you already are not! I cant afford to get time off at the moment to fly down but I mean if anyone here has seen it, like henrydorsetcase, then it would be cool to see what they say, seems like a good deal to me once again.

and binklebonk, come my tour of NZ, ill call in for sure. Ill be making a blog website n stuff and Ill ask people on here if I can stay on their lawns as I pass through from town to town, not asking you of that but just saying you can keep track when I get all sorted and going so you know when Im near, its my own long way down but exploring NZ. got to do these things when you can I say, and right now, I can, well soon. need a proper bike first.

No worries, im seriously thinking of taking my Max down south island in month gonna go down SH 1 and inland Kiakoura road etc was gonna do the senic route to miss CHCH but i want to go to the Britten Muesum in CHCH go down to Balclutha were im leaving it to head by 4x4 into the catlins but head back thru central /westcoast way to nelson lakes then ferry then home . I will do the same thing shortly

Paid 14999 last May for my ex-rental 2004 R1200GS with 58,000km. was regularly maintained. Blew clutch, pressure plate & gearbox input shaft at 70,000km, cost 3867 to fix, bike off road for 2 months. A great bike, but pays your money, takes your chances. Good luck

Hi again , have just looked up that 1996 BMWR1100GS and it didnt have all the paperwork for importation so they pulled it
