I totally agree Scott, most of these guys have no idea of the hidden costs that bike park opertors face, insurance, OSH complinace,(I think you know just how much it cost james for his resorce consent) and in some case hideous rents for monthly fees to wealthy forest owners for the use of the land, add to this cost of machine hire fuel etc, I still think most prices are fair..

however if riders feel that one park is to costly, well thats easy, stay away

if enuff do then the owner/operator will either have to lower their price or perhaps go out of buisness, and there will be one less bike park to ride at.

a few years ago when I worked at "woodhill bike park "" as it was then known, I was amazed at the amount of riders who moaned about the price that Greg Power charged for a ride.. Of course unknown to most Greg had to pay a huge monthly rental to Carter Holt, run a bulldozer, a tractor and the rescue quad, as well as have insurance cover, admin costs/printing etc staff wages, (how many times did I hear "fuck you guys are sitting on a gold mine ")
and comply with the forest owners requirment to keep the fences around the park intact, of course they were cut down on an almost daily basis by, a mixture of non paying trail riders, 4x4 dudes , poachers etc etc.

At one stage he was paying NZ$2,000 each time we hired a contractor to run the bully over the track, so finally he bought his own (at a huge cost) and would pay me and others to spend time durning the week grading the track,, as well as working there in the week ends..

anyway, I will still ride at Kimmies , and thunder regardless of the prices because I belive in supporting the parks... and I find it hard to complain about spending a few dollars to ride a NZ$10 grand + toy..

    my own fault really.

Actually did this when I stopped racing MX seriously. Well not BMX but MTB, did that for 7 years and it was way cheaper and better for the fitness lol!
Now I'm back riding bikes for the last 5 years as it became more affordable (and its cheaper to trailride, racing is out of the question due to the costs involved) but as time goes on find that I'm having to ride less or travel less to events to afford it as the expences go up again. If the Sandpit was not so close I think that my sport of leisure would have to change again.
I have not attended a Greg Power ride since he put his prices up. Quite a few here have made the same decision. Everyone has their point where its worth it or not to ride certain places. We don't all have bottomless pockets. And a lot of us can't afford new $10,000 bikes either. Many of us are on 2nd hand bikes.
Prices have to go up, its a fact of life in all areas. Had to put some of my own prices up for certain things. Some can afford it, some can't. We all have different tipping points.

Twice the displacement, twice the cost and a decibel problem, I'll pass on the inside brraaaap!!!

As you have brought it up re cost of bikes yeh well all have our different levels of what we can afford to have in the way of $$$ value on bikes but what a lot of people dont look at is this is also a cost factor of riding. I tend to look at it as around $20-$30 an hour for havin the bike. Take what you buy the bike for less what youll get for when you sell in to how many hours use / enjoyment you had from it thats what it really cost not just the ride fee.

I agree with Danger! Some of us have 3-4,000 dollar bikes and want to go out and take the kids with us. Its OK for the young single guy that has $100 disposable income spare each week to get his bike to the track and get in. But for us family guys that triples so we do become selective about where we go and go to where we can afford. I suppose it depends where you want to market the sport! Hopefully the sandpit will be able to hold its prices over the summer when we start choosing clay over sand and they will remain the same for next year as well! I'm with Danger I'd go out to kimis for a KB meet once a year and haven't been on a Greg power ride and probably won't. Once the kids are working full time it will be different but at the moment Ardmore, Harrisville practice, Thunder and the Mr Motorcycles rides are our only choices.

And there's genuine points both ways. I didn't think the fuel bill at the sandpit would be 19 grand? That's just under $4,400 per week. Seems a lot per week but if that what it is then we don't have any idea how much costs have risen.

as the guys say above, its a two way street, we can keep our ride prices down because we can write the expenses off though another business, and since it is charity rides nobody is getting paid, the sandpit/kimmy's/Thundercross and Greg Power do not have the same luxury, and there is no way running trail rides or bike parks is a gold mine,

I just watch TV. Can't remember the last time I spent money at the movies or a DVD. Probably about 10 years or more since going to the movies.

Barty, do you have a spread sheet for that?

My first ever visit to Kimmys was last year - enjoyed the ride but after I washed my bike I freewheeled it down to the car and trailer(10metres away)without my helmet on which was wrong I must admit - what happened after absolutely shocked me and my mate - the proprietor came running down and called me every name under the sun so loudly that everyone else in the parking area heard it. I was a couple of ideas away from from decking the guy and thought at first that he was crazy. This was totally uncalled for and he will never see me at his park again even if he invited me to ride free(unless it changes hands). He's a foul mouthed nasty dude and could do with an attitude check. He also swore at a friend of mine in front of his children when he went to escort his kids around the kids track for the first time( no one there keeping an eye out for them at the time!)
I now go to Thunder Valley which is run by very nice and courteous people who like someone mentioned earlier donate to good causes and give you the sixth ride free.Kimmy's need to step back and figure out who's doing who the favour by riding there. What goes around comes around.Period.
Whether you think you can or cant - you will always be right.

    Fark!! 19k...No Reckless $1,900 or $475 per week. 2.5 days/week tractor time.
We have no plans to increase $ in the forseeable (wheres spell check) future. Water blaster will be going in soon but will be token operated. Still cheaper and easier than going to wash world.

This makes it harder for me to be able to ride. That is why I don't like expensive places to ride. Oh and I know the sandpit went up by $5 but I can see where the extra money is going there.
So what you are saying is that all your costs have gone up, but the poor bastard who's providing riding facilities for you must be somehow magically exempt from all those very same cost increases??

    Get a grip!!

I have been to thunderpark many times (around 10 - 15 times) and am getting a bit over it to be honest. I think 35 bucks is way too much for such an ungroomed short trail loop. They might be able to get away with $30 like Kimmys charges, but I would still way rather go to kimmys if the price was the same. So the only way you would get me going to Thunder is if the price is cheaper ($20 is fine) or if kimmys is closed and I have no where else to go.

But I am a tightwad. And I understand prices are going up for everything so Its understandable how they had to put the price up. But I don’t think I will be going back if it costs 35 bucks for the same track as it was last week.

But I hear a bit about this so called "Motocross Track" at Thunder park!? I'm pretty familiar with the whole place but the only thing I can think might be called an Mx track would be the little piles of dirt next to the carpark? Or are these just piles of dirt? I couldn’t see any tracks joining them up very well either!

Someone please let me know where this MX track is.

DUH!! Shit sorry mate! many apologies I certainly got that completly wrong. Hehe I don't want to wish extra costs on you!!

Arven! There isn't an MX track at Thunder! Its just the farm trail loops! I think the confusion came from here, someone asked about where the MX track was and it got all confused in the Normal KB way!! And Thunder was still $20 last fortnight when we went! Anyone would get sick of going to the same place everytime!
