I thought that all Wellington test routes started from the VTNZ station on Tory Street, headed south down Tasman Street, left into John Street and down through the Newtown shops to the carpark behind the Newtown Park grandstand. After tricks (figure 8s, braking, various other slow riding tests) were completed, retracing steps to the start point?
That's where I did mine. And in a thunderstorm. I had the Zeal aquaplaning during the stopping test, much to the bemusement of the examiner.
Make sure you keep your brake and clutch levers covered at all times.

Are you starting at the Kilbirnie bowling club? If so, then I did my restricted and full test from there and did two different routes. Both involved going through the airport and back over that 70/80 k part past St Pats....

When I did my *restricted* in Kilbirnie they took me around the blocks from the bowling club down to Lyall bay beach.
On my full license, they had me do 'highway driving' from the airport down to the roundabouts towards the bowling club.
Just remember the give way rules, can be tricky in those areas, and move you head a lot, to show you're checking over your sholder every time you think of changing lane etc.

Kilbirnie is a straight forward route. Down to Lyall bay right to do the U turn bit or left and around the airport. Both routes go around the airport at the end. Who is the testing officer? Clint is very good. Oh and don't ride off without the tester - or if you do stop and wait for him to catch up and tell you off before you continue!

When I did one of my test, the communication head set was broken, so the instructor couldn't talk to me from the car. I had to watch his indicators to know where to go.
Not the safest way of doing a test I thought...

ha ha i guess that problem is made worse with some bikes mirrors as you can only see you glove and half the road

It was the Indian or Pakistani guy. Nice guy but he told me "You're a very naughty man"
Still got my license though! It really is quite an easy riding route around there - you only have to ride safely and follow the road rules.

He sounds like the same tester I had. I sat my restricted at Kilbirnie. I used an earpiece which was fine in the carpark but on the bike with traffic noise, it was useless and I had to constantly look to see where he was indicating. We left the Bowling Club, turned left onto Evans Bay Road, up Wellington Road and through Mt Vic tunnel, up Adelaide Road to the VTNZ testing station there. I sat my Full last Friday from Mt Vic Bowling club and got the same tester. I got given a walkie talkie which I had to clip to my jacket but again, traffic noise made it pretty hard to hear. We went through Courtenay Place, up Taranaki, right onto the bypass road and left at the lights and up to Brooklyn where I did a couple of U turns, pointed out Hazards and did a short stint at 70km's then back to the Bowling club. Yes, its perfectly trivial once you have about 5,000kms under your belt. The only thing that will ruin it will be your nerves. All they want to see is you pootle around and follow the road rules, and not wobble like a total newbie fool, so relax and enjoy it - you will look back on the experience for many years.
Ride, ride, ride, the week before your test, so you are completely at ease with the bike. Once you have the earpiece in, ask for a radio check, and ask how to adjust the volume - mine had the volume turned all the way up and I could just barely hear him.
It will be fun, you will see. Don't worry about the route.
