SAFE and preferred camping spots North Island

With summer coming up there are going to be a lot of bikers wanting to travel and camp out in safety.

Where are some of your favourite overnight camping spots?
Where should bikers stay away from?

All Top10 parks are brillant for camping! Highly recommended - clean, tide, safe.

Whangaroa motor camp - Dave is a top bloke, more scallops than you can eat. Last time we were there he kept feeding us lobster!

Otaki Forks (DOC) is an awesome place to stop off. Safe but secluded, safe swimming and a lot of different tramping tracks. A really nice ride, about 15mins off the beaten track heading inland from Otaki, SH1 Horowhenua. Heaps of camping bays. Toilets.

+1 - they're great. Google their website as they are pretty well distributed round the country.

Opunake camping ground is great and also the one before Taupo...Motuoapa. Very safe for kids too if you want to take them!! Both right next to the sea or lake.

Oh dear, another sad little post from the man who thinks sarcasm is wit.

Hence my "hehe" - I realised he was being funny about the "tide" instead of "tidy".

You can camp at our Backpackers in Raetihi! We love bikes! Also not too far if you don't mind twisty gravel, is Ruatiti Doc campground at the Ruatiti Domain which is really nice.

We often camp at Totara Reserve in the lovely Pohangina Valley. Facilities fairly basic but being rebuilt after flooding

Contact DOC (Dept of Conservation) they have great grounds around the place. One of theirs is at Whananaki - nice twisty road to get to it too

Whananaki is north, past Whangarei, past Hikurangi and then turn right.... NIce east coast beach, clean water, clean sand, clean camp ground... They put a band on the back of a flat deck for new years too...

Martins Bay just past Warkworth is a great place to camp. Safe beach, cool people and a really tidy beach. Great spot for heading out to Matakana and Goat Island and there is always the Puhoi Tavern on the door step.
We usually get out there at least twice a year and always chill out once we hit the place. One tip though is to avoid the beachfront sections cost if a NE wind blows through there, you will be the first biker in space.
Also Tank is 100% right about TopTen, Ive stayed in Kerikeri and Taupo and both were great.
Take care, ride safe and eat pies
