    Honda keys

got a spare key for the rr cut the other guy, the guy is a biker, knows his stuff etc.. he showed me the official silica honda bike key blank, it was slightly different - one of the grooves is roundish rather than square.

I took the key anyway, got home, put it in, turns the bike on, but not fully (cant hear the fuel system doing is whirring check thing), and of course it will turn over but not start. It opens all the other locks too.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

The original may have a magnet or a chip in the key and ignition (its an anti theft thing) and they have to match ... thats why it can open the other locks as well

    or

if its for an older bike that don't have this... its just cut wrong.

I wouldn't worry about that. If it turns out to be the case then you will probably realise within 5 minutes and it will cost you no more than $10

An original RFID chip key blank for my volvo was only $70, it costs around $30 to get it 'tuned' to the ignition though.

where opinion holds more weight than fact.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.

All I know is if I loose both my keys to the VTR its $90-$100 (maybe more) to get a new one from Honda. and Honda will only give the key out once or twice and if you loose it again then you have to get a new ignition...

    or something like that

What do you mean by only $70 for a key blank?

    That's larceny.

Mate of mines on an '08 CBR600RR and we were just having this conversation about an hour ago... Honda quoted him $3k if he looses both keys as they wont reprogramme new keys. So would have to replace the ignition.

Course I cant claim if that's actual fact or the dealer trying to scare him into not loosing his keys

$70 thats fookin cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!1 the Mrs bust her key (if you can call it that) for her Merc and a replacement took 10 days and $500 FFS!!!

Keys are high tech these days with passive gizmo's imbedded in them.

Morcs you've only had the bike 5 mins, you lost a key already?

Fact. If you lose all of your keys you need to replace the ECU which is over $2k. Definitely something you don't want to do!

As long as you have a key in your possession you can use it to program a blank for a small fee. $50-60 or somesuch.

No, but lost the keys for the TL about 3 week ago. Didnt enjoy the entire day hunting, and then pulling the barrell out and going round various locksmiths...

so as a preventive measure, getting a 2nd key made
