Bike insurance - straight up bloke!

Did some looking around on the web for insurance on my '86 CB750 and got a whole host of quotes. My present company (AMI) who have both the cars, the house and the contents weren't bothered and showed it. The majority of the rest wanted to limit me to 5,000km or less a year.

AMI are the pits - years of trouble free service - but you make one claim after assholes rip off your house and they set an investigator on you...

Interesting regarding the comments about AMI - I have been with them for about 10 years and have had a couple of claims, one in particular got a bit nasty when the other party denied liability and took me to court (even though they were in the wrong - turned in front of me). AMI even went to the trouble of sending a representative to the hearing to assist with my case and were extremely helpful throughout, they have always paid out promptly and without issue in my experience.
They have also insured my bikes without issue, one of which is a 1980 CBX - they had no problems insuring this for a relatively high agreed value with no depreciation built in due to it's collectable status.
The only negative I have with them is that while the cost of insuring household and cars with them is very competitive they aren't the cheapest on the bikes (but they aren't the dearest by a long shot).

That said I had very competitive quotes from both Classic Cover and Kiwibike and will most likely move the bikes insurances over to them (Kiwibike) when I get a chance to sort all that out. I have heard nothing but good stuff about both of these companies.

I guess with AMI it may well depend on your location, generally the bigger companies aren't so competitive (or interested) in bike insurance in the bigger cities, in particular Auckland and Christchurch.

I was with AMI and in the begining of march this year,I qualified for free be max which you get after being five years claim free. 3 weeks later I write my bike of into a bank they stuffed me around for ages untill they finally had to pay out as they couldnt find anyway to get out of it, then said they wont insure me again for a bike.But happy to carry on with the low risk stuff like the house,contents and 2 cars .

Yep,we had a claim when some wanker prised open a window(aluminium)in a bedroom,jumped in and flogged our video,wife arrived home as he went out the front door,only way out that door was if you were inside,i.e can't put the safety chain on outside.Claim goes in after cops rung,they in infinate wisdom said no forced entry,what there were a few scratches on frame,the guy did a good job to not damage the frame wedging the window(albeit the catch was loose before).So we said cancel our policies and went elsewhere.And later down the track it turned out we found out who might have done it,told cops they said not worth prosecuting as timeframe etc,small item etc,we replied be nice for the investigating officer to tell the old insurance company eh.Reply was ombudesman can deal with it and the cop would review his findings,waste of time.

Petty crime seems to hardly ever get investigated.......you have to do all the work your self, even then the cops are to busy with other things more important............like speeeding tickets etc.

Yep, sad but true - in fact this was something I mentioned in a recent email to John Key to see what their stance was amongst other questions I had, here FWIW is the relevant part of their reply:

So anyway, after the big wind storm we had more than 2 months ago,I puts in a claim...they wanted to argue every single point, and now they want to apply our $250 excess to each single item....which means they will pay out nothing..
An insurance co should be judged on how it deals with claims not how cheap the premiums are...
