Orange flashing speed cameras on the Auck Harbour Bridge?

On Saturday evening while getting on the Fanshawe St on ramp to cross the Harbour bridge I noticed the digital overhead signs imposed a 80km limit as there was 2 lanes was closed for maintenance work.

Just after getting on to the 80 km strip of motorway from Fanshaw St I was in the left hand lane doing 100 km and on my left I noticed there was a white van parked across the left hand barriers on the grass with some funky instrument (couldn't make it out as it was too dark), followed by a massive orange flash as I whizzed pass.

I had a feeling it was speed camera but couldn't be sure. Felt pretty lucky that I was on my bike.

Just wanted to double check if anybody else experienced this?

Mobile speed camera - they dont use radar or laser so hard to detect...

I presume they use radar, as my detector sees them

Ive noticed the Vans come up as Ka band. Harder to detect if they are facing away from you (aka facing the other side) but front on, you can pick 'em up from up to 500M away.

If you are lucky, the operator will have been asleep in the back and not been able to get your plate number.


Yes, they use Ka Band radar (which a decent detector will be able to pick up quite some distance away...).

Bit hard to get bikes since we don't have plates up the front and the flash was frontal.

But nevertheless, it was fun experience, I got away and praise the heavens that I ride a motorcycle.

Fixed cameras don't (they use inductive strips in the road) but van cameras use Ka band microwave at a 45 degree angle to the road.

You don't get a lot of warning as the radar signal is weak and directed across the road. It is there though but you need to be quick on the brakes. Unless like me you were doing exactly 100kph of course...

They'll nab ya if the operator gets your plate after you pass.
