    92/93 cbr900rr?

Ok missed out on the gixxer, but have seen a couple of early blades for sale.
What do I need to know about these particular bikes given the age now and probably high mileages! Botany Honda has a 93 and there a couple on tardme. I want something cheap and reliable that isn't going to cost more than routine maintenance, so no major engine work, suspension replacement etc. What do I need to look for and what questions do i need to ask?

Good bikes to own.... things to look out if they have high mileage is charging system - rectifier/regulator. Notorious to fail due to bad design. Other than that the usual wear and tear items rotors, cam-chain, valve clearance... I have own two 1995 models loved them super light steering compared to other 900cc bikes that period of time.

More like owners try to charge a nearly dead battery using the bikes charging system.....

Anyhow, the 1992 Blade was renowned for being a bit of a mental bike at the time.
The power of a thou... well, at the time, and the weight of a 600....
Of course they are all like that now days.

16" Front wheels make steering a snap... too snappy for some.
Check out how common 16" tyres are...

It may have got a 17" mod done to it though.

    I found this for you....

Plenty of guys on the old fireblade mailing list (now that's going back a while) had the 17" front wheel mod. It made getting a working speedo drive an utter bitch on the 92/93 (94+ had speedo drive from countershaft) and didn't really improve anything (it was mainly the geometry that caused the quick handling). Most did it so they could get 17" slicks for track use. The 16" it uses is a 130/70x16 and is still pretty common (at least in sporty tyres).

Some of those guys had enormous miles on theirs. Common faults were regulator rectifier units, fuel pumps, fork legs (poor chroming) and shocks. Most seem to wear very well and it was a very tough and reliable engine (100000km+ on stock rings and bearings wasn't unusual).

A true pearl of a bike and one of the great benchmark motorbikes of history. Can you tell I had one?

    blade

I brought one new back in 92(A$14000!), was the bike to have back then.Fitted end can and dynojet kit which actually works.I clocked up 170,000km before the bottom end went(still ran but very noisy), thrashed it every time i rode it.Only engine parts replaced were the cam chain and tensioner, shims every 25,000 and oil and filter every 3000k(after 100,000 was every 5000k).The front discs needed replacing at 80,000km and new wheel bearings. The 16" front wheel is not a problem as the tyre profile makes it the same diameter as a 17" and they still make good rubber in 16".Some bikes had gearbox problems, not shifting into 2nd, but i never had any problems with mine. All in all a good solid bullet proof bike, but they are getting on a bit now, i would look at something from 96 on, a much better model and still cheap.
