Poor effort - best I've done was with a pillion at 2AM on the Viffer - ironically the pillion had their full license!

How does buying a bigger bike out of licence work from a dealer? They have to record your licence so I would assume whoever the forms go to would say "no sorry, you can't have it cause you're a newbie".
Why? Just borrow a 250 from a friend.

And since when do the dealers have to record your license? Since when do they care if you even have a license. All they need is the money.

Haha yeah I was just thinking that.

I rode a VFR400 NC30 on learners, I had all the gear, flourescent safety jacket... drove reasonably responsibly and ALWAYS on the look out for police/holdens. Never get stopped. Even if you do, i don't think its that likely the average cop will go looking for what cc your bike is.... and then there are excuses you could try pull. You will be nervous at first, but then soon you'll wonder why you worried.

I know a guy on a SV650 on his learners who is not even bothered about getting his restricted he's done it so long now. Also know a guy who's riding his GSXR750 on learners.

....The main problem though, for me, was that i spent WAY too much time glancing and my mirrors and watching speed instead of enjoying the ride without a single care. That was the main thing, gets to you a little sometimes. But having said that, In the end i saved a heap of money on STUPID 250 prices... would have paid for the fines if i did get caught anyway!!

Not reccommending that you do it, but if you really think you can be responsible on the bigger machine and have a passion for bikes (ie. not just getting it to be a squid/boy racer) AND you can face buying proper gear... then you could consider it.

If you want to do the restricted... just borrow a mates GN250, simple? And about dealers, i don't believe they wouldnt let you buy the machine if you showed them the cash... no way! That's how my friend got his GSXR750!

Interesting. I think I've heard that before but wondered why when I got mine they asked for my licence details. Most probably for the rego.

Why? Just borrow a 250 from a friend.
I wouldn't have been able to do it up until now since I was the only person I knew with a 250. I suppose sooner or later you find someone on a 250 that will share.

Don't mind me I'm just cynical.
I take passengers on my restricted car all the time.

I'm more concerned about times that they stop all the traffic rather then being pulled over.

A little bit of Mom advice here. Please dont take passengers in your car when you only have a restricted license to drive. The ramifications can be very bad, and I am not just talking about the police ones here. If you are driving our of your license conditions it voids your insurance. Dont place yourself in a position where if you have an accident you are left with the bill!

I worked for a lawyer a while ago and this situation came up with the son of one of his clients. He hit a very new Mercedes. The damage was not so big to look at, but the cost to repair was in the tens of thousands of dollars. The advice the lawyer gave him was, wait for the demand for payment, then take it to the court house and bankrupt yourself!

Going bankrupt might sound like the bill goes away (it does) but it takes 8 years to come clear of the stigma. Three years bankrupt, the 5 years after discharge for the record to drop off your credit history. A long time in a young fellas life.

Do a defensive driving course and get your full as soon as you can. Dont drive with passengers.

    Mom growl over.

I brought my vl250 without a licence. I got my learners a week after I brought it, all they asked for my car licence or passport as identification for the ownership/registration papers.
I wouldn’t be broke if the voices in my head paid rent

It would make no sense to need a license to buy it, what if you were buying it for someone else or whatever? There are lots of reasons that you could buy one apart from riding it.

I wouldn't bankrupt myself because someone else wasn't insured. If you don't insure then you don't get insurance. Conversely, if HE doesn't insure HE doesn't get insurance. It doesn't all work one way but not the other.

Alright although I'm gonna get ostracized for saying this, here goes.

Even if you do get caught, The money you save from not having to buy a expensive 250 'learner' bike will enable you to break even, hell, you'll even have enough money left over for burger king.

Also I've found from numerous test rides that most 'learner bikes' are totally fucT from ignorant people (Disclaimer: Not every learner is ignorant) not knowing how to maintain it. It's not like a car, you can't just drop it off for a service once every year and be done with it.

$5000 for early 'mint' 90s 250 or $4500 for a late 90s mint 600/650? You choose. It even leaves a healthy margin for getting snapped once.

The ONLY downside to it is that you have no insurance, so if you stack it into a merc or it gets stolen, you'll be in the shitter. For this reason, I recommend not riding like a twat for the former and maybe buying a bike that's worth no more than ~$5000 then putting alarm / locks on it if you leave it unattended for the former.

PS If you get owned as a result of this post, it is not my fault. Take this 'advice' at your own risk.

Quite right. There are car dealers out there who will do exactly that, when an international person shows up to study in NZ and happens to be carrying a large wad of cash.
"You would like that twin-turbo, NoS equipped, jap-import with the baked bean can exhaust? You have cash? Certainly, I will sell that to you right now!"
What is the dealer going to say? "Piss off!"??
The person is just going to walk along the road until he/she finds a dealer who will sell to them. Then we have another danger on our roads.

A made up story? No. That all came from a central Auckland car dealer's mouth.

So what would YOU do if you hit someone and did 10's of '000's of damage to their nice new car?

Oh thats right - you done believe in insurance and 'self insure' - then take the gutless way out refusing to pay regardless of the financial hardship you cause the other person because of your actions and being too tight to pay for insurance.

Right, any damage to anyone else ? Any liability ? If so, deny everything and refuse to discuss the accident with anyone. Disappear into the long grass, and say nothing. Fix your own bike with your own money, and let your sore knee mend itself etc. If anyone wants to knock on your door and talk about the incident, tell them they are at the wrong place. If the feds turn up, tell them u dunno jack about that, and shut the door and go back to what you were doing. Letter from some insurance company demanding payment? bew hew hew, chuck it in the bin. Life goes on. Dont FFS admit the whole thing to the feds in the hope things will be better..

Seriously - people with such lax morals piss the hell out of me. Its gutless and exactly the kind of thing that is wrong with this country.

You are generally the same kind of people that waaaaaaaaaa if it all goes wrong for you.
