    New bike prices 2009

Always looking at bikes and wondering how much prices will change in 2009. One view I got today was bike prices don't just depend on the exchange rate. Some brands (eg HD) set the price a year in advance so it is constant. Others (eg Triumph) will follow the exchange rate. BTW word is HD are going up.

The LCD panel I am thinking of buying is increasing in price 10% -15% in Feb 09.

Does anyone have some reliable information on what bike price changes will be in 2009?

Was told by Colemans and Holeshot that once NZ stocks are gone from the Suzukifest, that they could go up by as much as 20%!!

I have heard bike prices will rise but....

If what is happening in other sectors follows for bikes, in 12 months time big bikes will be cheaper than today.

The theory goes like this: bike dealers have to put up prices because of exchange rates etc. but almost immediately market demand collapses 'cos punters can no longer access cheap credit and don't get the pay rises or bonuses they once did. Dealers are left with heaps of unsold stock and enter into price wars for their survival. That is the time to buy as some dealers will go to the wall. Then a few dealers will be left and they can charge what they like to a much diminished market.

In my sector I expect to pay less for my components in a year than I do now since the suppliers already have less customers to sell to (unfortunately). Prices went up for a while and now have crashed.

Reliable information from one of the Japanese distributors ( cant say who ) is that their stock purchased in the next 1/4 will increase by around 15 % with the Yen at current levels.

Most if not all of this increase will have to be passed on to the customer.

There wont be a cheaper time to buy a new bike than now, in the next 12 months
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time

Bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch!! I get my full in July so judging by what everyone is saying and also what I figure I'm gonna be right smack dab in the middle of price increases.

Huge dilemma (shit, that took me ages to work out the spelling!), I can afford to buy one now if I do a bit of finance adjustments, but I can't afford to be riding a 600 + on my learners/restricted and I can't afford really afford not to trade in the hyobag. And I "technically" can't go test riding. In fact I would say that dealers wouldn't even look at giving me a test bike.

    Buggered if I know....

All dealers now will suggest prices are going up next year to try to get you to BUY NOW!!!.

I don't doubt that this will happen - due to the Japanese economy being largely unaffected by the global credit crisis, the Jap bikes will become more expensive thereby pulling up the cost of all the others.

But dealers are likely to give an exaggerated forecast and, depending on consumer spending, the hikes may be short lived.

Here's hoping. I just worked out some "new" prices based on 15% increase:

Kwaka ZX-6R (cheapest of the supersport 600's) $17,000! The price of the current CBR600RR. Daytona 675... over $20k! For a 600 bike!

Right, no one buy any bikes when they go up so they'll be forced to bring them back down and I won't have to sell my wife off

Looking at the way the world economy is going, I think you may be able to wrangle some good deals, ie play one shop off against another, I think competition between shops will get tight in the next few months. also NZ tends to be a dumping ground for old new stock that can't be sold in the bigger markets, some of this stock may flow threw in time as well.

Having imported a few items from Europe recently, I have been shocked by an increase of ~20%!
Bikes will surely follow that trend.

That's not quite right, the new 2009 Daytona 675 with more power, less weight and tons of cool features is $17,990 plus on road costs. Triumph just released their new prices and most stayed the same and a couple even dropped.

Yip, the GBP is stronger with the NZD then the yen is so trumpets are good buying compared with the jappa's.

Honda has gone nuts with increases. I ended up buying a 2008 Daytona because I'm picky and didn't want a black or red one (even with the new features). Saved some coin because of run out (good for mods) and got a colour that isn't that common. Love it.

Triumphs are really good buying at the mo' (but I'm biased )

They will be going up due to both exchange rate and the price of the raw materials used to make the bikes. Titanium has gone up heaps last time i looked. (Very few bike use that any way) I also think less bikes will be sold so there wont be as much bulk buying so no discounts etc

Totally agree. Remember when new Firestorms were $20k then $15k?, I'm sure they went even lower than that. The bike shops/manufacturers can put their prices up if they like, doesn't mean to say we have to pay it. Look at the bikes on Trademe which are a few years old, like new and sometimes, for half the price of a new one. I bought a mint 2001 R1 in 2003 for $12500 with 12,000 km on the clock, retail was around $24,000. They're out there.
