Would you ride on Continental Sport Attack?

Not sure what's going on here with the new Continental Sport Attack tyre's on my 2004 R1

But look at the photos

I emailed the New Zealand importer with the photos and they came back to me with an answer

You have been accelerating to fast out of the corners ;-)

Ive only done 500 Ks and that was riding to Taupo and 200 Ks was on the Track at Taupo in Group 2

I always ride on Metzler M3 its just I won these at Trackdays the Metzler have done heaps of Ks and heaps of Trackdays and never looked like these Sport Attack

To me looks like they are coming apart from the join ,,,the guy said they will be ok but would you be happy with that answer ? they look bad as well

It look's to me as if have started to delaminate at the joint.

Interested in what any on has to say or think on the subject

A bit strange?? I don't see these cuts/lines as a danger at this point but I would keep an I on them. The thing is if they go away with use or if they get worse. Take photo's every 500km.

I have swapped out multiple sets of these tyres on my K6.

The join is sometimes visible [tho' never that bad], never seems to affect performance so I ride on..........bet you find them performing better than the M3's?

I'd not be happy with that. At that rate of wear you'll have hunks of tyre flying off! It does appear to be a rubber join.

I ran a sport attack front on my last bike (road rear) and I was very impressed with it.

Track-days will eat rubber, but the sport attack is a ideal tyre for sporting use with the occasional track day.

I would be carefull with putting a company down like that...especially with its close tie's on here with a few KB racers.

That looks like someone's had a go at cutting your tyres dude...delaminating tyres don't tend to be in three spots...on the sides!!!! in a unniform pattern across the tread.


Be interesting to see shaun's opinion if he spots this thread...also Roberts.
They both have seen a few tyres...

There dosent seem to be any deformation of the rubber around the marks so the carcas of the tyre is probably ok. Id be happy enough to keep using them but keep an eye on the marks to see if they get any better but if they start getting worse then I would be worried about them

Since we live in the same town mate, I would be more than happy to come and have a look at them for you BUT

I have been using there tyres for a wee while now,and have never seen that happen before. ( I have seen it happen on different brands though) It could be a fluke of nature, ie, you ran over some thinh on the track?


PS, I have just a flash back of what this is all about!

The tread is bonded to the carcas in continious strips ie, one strip to full rotation of the tyre, there is obviously an over lap join in the tyre at this point, what can and does happen on many different brands ocassionally is, the cure process of this join is slightly inter faired with, by the chemicals in the tyre, and on de accelleration and breaking by fluke, this point can be on the ground at that time and worked very very hard, causing this slight seperation, TRUST ME PLEASE It is NOT DANGEROUS at all!

I personally would be happy enough to continue using them as they are though.

One of the problems of course is that so much of riding is in the head and this don't help that.

Every used set of sport-attacks I have seen exhibit similar marks. Usually the rear is affected more with a cut mark appearing part way across the tyre.

pretty normal really. We see heaps of this type of join seperation on other brands as well. Never becomes a problem in my experiance. How did you find the grip??

I've used up a fair few sets of Sport Attacks. I do remember once seeing one or two "knife cut" like lines opening up on a rear, identical to what you have shown. Mine were not as pronounced as your lines and made no difference to me.

I saw this as a safety call to other riders just in case.

I had no issue with tyres of their performance apart from it did'nt look cool but the tyres performed faultlessly.
I would say keep an eye on it but ride on the tyre as normal.
Maybe take Shaun up on his offer to check it out to perhaps ease your mind about it.

Im not unhappy with the tyres and you have to ask why.

You only have 2 wheels after all
