Two great motorcycling docos on Documentary Channel tonight 29 Dec 2008.

2030 - Love, Speed and Loss

In motorcycle racing circles Kim Newcombe is remembered as the New Zealander who came second in the 1973 World 500 Grand Prix Championship. He's also famous for the bike he rode, which he developed himself, using the engine from an outboard motor, then refined for the German manufacturer Dieter Konig who became his friend and mentor. Justin Pemberton's documentary portrait is a showcase for the Super 8 footage shot by Janeen, Newcombe?s childhood sweetheart, then wife.

2130 - The Doctor, The Tornado and The Kentucky Kid

Another great movie from director Mark Neale, the director of Faster, and Faster & Faster, showcasing the 2005 USGP at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Although a mediocre race in comparison to the Italian GP which took place a few races before, the history behind a race absent for 13 years is mesmerizing to say the least. Rich with celebrities, state of the art Motogp machines, and 50,000 rabid fans, this documentary will satisfy any fanatic of the awesome world of Motogp. Hopefully there will be a directors cut with footage of the 2006 GP that ended with similar results. Nicky Hayden in his maiden top step podium finish proved to the world and to his Repsol Honda team that he can be a world champion, the only problem is a young, charismatic 6 times world champion who goes by the nickname "The Doctor", Valentino Rossi and his American counterpart and teammate Colin "The Texas Tornado" Edwards.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

    - James Dickey, Cherrylog Road.

The old man has been telling me every time I see him about a guy from back in the day that used a modified putboard motor on a bike and kicked ass which shows how advanced marine technology was back then even. Now I know his name! Pitty I don't have sky

No sky at my place, but I saw Love, Speed & Loss at the movies a couple of years ago. Most excellent film! Thanks for the heads up.

Cool docos. I've never heard of Kim Newcombe before, but what an absolute Kiwi legend!

As for the other one - I've seen Faster/Faster and Faster before and I think I like this one better. It has way more action to it. Laguna Seca is such a nightmare of a track, in Tourist Trophy I almost always bin it on the corkscrew, and those guys pass fearlessly on it on MotoGP bikes!

There are a lot of kiwi racing legends you never seem to hear about unless you spend 30 mins looking for it. Like Kim Newcombe, a guy -name i forgot (yes thats how often you hear of him...) that won the GP, people you probably have already heard of (graeme crosby, shaun harris, bert munroe etc) and more IOM TT winning characters
