Wave to everybody .... scooters, cyclists, women pushing prams, hot looking chicks ..... people on Harleys .... the lot !!! Use both hands at once, while nodding energetically at the same time ..... Lets start a "bikers are friendly" movement !!!
But .... I wave at all people riding motorcycles. We are enjoying the same experience ... whatever the brand or attitude.
It's always a pleasant surprise when a gang member smiles and waves back. And yes some smile ... and it's easy to see that when they are wearing the favoured black imitation German Helmet!
I will never forget the picture of a gang member from USA whom hit a concrete power pole face first while wearing no helmet. He lived but it was not pretty. I rode for some years with open face and visor before fullface helments became norm. From memory a lot of riders resented them because the rumor was they could cause serious injuries if you hit face first. Please dont ask me to explain this logic, it was a long time ago and I couldnt understand the argument then either, though to be very frank, we only wore helmets to keep the cops off our backs and I doubt most of them would have helped in a crash because they were dropped a hundred times, had cracks in them and were hand painted etc etc.
Hi Gizzit - I am born and breed Whangarei stock. Do they still try and beat 'Killer Hill' up Mt Parahaki? My mates and I used to go back the back road , Mt Tiger Road, behind Parahaki and end out Parua Bay and drop into the pub for a pint, many happy memories from the late 1970's.
Anyway back to the point. I have always waved when able and when its practical though the Wellington motorway is quite wide in places so I usually leave my salute usually for those days when I am cruising along on a nice hot windless day on the open road or touring, enjoying the ride and therefore its my way of adknowledging this fact to other riders ..... and also to prove that the cagers havent got me yet.
Then came the day when cages were confined to zoos.. and the bipedals ruled the earth again..Tu@ advt # 666 Return of the beasties
Yes when I started to ride, it was on dirt bikes, and wore an open face helmet, sometimes with a visor. That was all we had for a while, and when FF helmets came in ..... no one was keen to use them !!??
Im not sure if they still do it, but in the early 70's, I used to run my Yammie RT1B 360 up that hill ... and sometimes not make it! We used to have a ball around those tracks and around the fire roads of Glenbervie Forest ..... Those were the days!!
Yes I always try and wave, or at least nod if I'm going around a tightish corner .... Being friendly doesn't cost much, eh.
I find when Im riding my Suzuki I get heaps of waves, nods etc from other non Harley bikes and about half the harley riders.
When Im on my Harley its the reverse most Harley riders wave and about half the non Harley riders.
The wife and I do notice that more motorcyclists will talk with you at a stop if you arent on the HOG. some times if they do you get bailed up and told all Harley riders a posers or never wave etc etc.
It interesting obverving these reactions when all you are doing is having a nice time on your bike.
My take on it all is that if you ride something differant then you just arent on the other persons radar and they often dont even see you. Some people just dont give a damn that you happen to ride a bike and dont feel any special sharing of the moment, and others are focused on a narrow spectrum and your bike just doesnt float their boat.
Live and let live I say.

Without the PT.
It depends on the moment. Mostly I'm busy - sometimes a nod will do. Out on the plains - why not.
I really don't care if you do or not.
The type of bike has nothing to do with it. There are all sorts of people on all different brands. As many as there are riding bikes.
helen and I on our way inland from omarama waved at every bike, mostly great big cruisers...they all waved back...except these 2 sports bikes....wankers lol
oh and an adventure bike mid corner who was probably busy keeping an eye on the car infront of him...
I love having my highway throttle on and waving at bikes with my right hand !! people know that something isn't right - just they can't tell what !!
