Had a call today, the road is in very bad nick at the moment. Thick gravel, and now after rain it's slush. Pip locals recommend 4WD only.
Not sure where I should post this, but thought someone might be heading that way and want to know if they need their gumboots....

No sorry, but it was a Pipiriki lady that told me so it must be quite bad. I rode up it once on my old GN and it was heaps of fun, (except when my chain came off). Great bike to do it on, go for it. I went up there on my Honda CB250 in 1974. What a bummer that was, the road's probably no better now than it was then.

Nope, you didn't offend me, you depressed me with your pessimistic view that the road was probably no better 34 years later. After 34 years you are still bummed out about a ride on a backroad. That's just sad.

I was speaking to a workmate this morning who's wife is from that way and family is still up the river road somewhere.
Apparently the word locally is they are getting it ready to seal the final section.

Met a couple travelling around in a 1926 (ish) Model T who drove up the river road this week, and they had no complaints, so I guess it's dried out again.

I did a mountain bike ride with a mate through there some years back. Before hitting that section of road we asked a couple of locals at a pub in Ohakune what the road and terrain was like, their response was that we'd be taking a big risk with some unsavoury locals.
We did the ride undaunted, enjoyed it very much. Camped at a spot and met a few locals, had a great time. Very nice people.
If I had an adventure bike I'd be through there again in a shot. Great scenery.
Where's the ride?
Adventure/Dual Purpose forum would be ideal.
Damn shame.

Plenty of good people up that way, and more then a few pieces of shit. Crap goes on all the time up that way. And spreads into town.
