    Thumbs down Buying a gsxr600.. was a RACEBIKE

    Hi,

    Have got my eyes set on a cheap gsxr600 k1.

    Was raced from new until 2005 when it was road registered. Then was dereg in an insurance write-off. Has been repaired and been driven another 30,000kms since fix. Would this be an okae bike to buy and own for a while?

    Step up from a 250 and wanting a newish 600 and this is cheap cheap in my price range. Would I be looking at trouble free biking for a while? Or am i worried something will bugger up on and Im going to crash?

    Also since its been raced is it going to be buggered at all or will it be fine? Speedo is upto 56400 now. Can provide more info if you need to know anything more.

    Check with your local mechanic, some of them do a sort of used bike check for a small fee, they'll be able to tell you about how much life is left in it.

    Depends entirely on how well it was looked after. I would prefer to buy race bikes of people I know that have maintained them, because generally if its someone that has their head screwed on the right way, they look after their race bikes very well, much better than your average road rider anyway.

    56k is getting pretty high, but as you say it is cheap, and you get what you pay for.

    I have to agree with this.....

    A Racer will ALWAYS keep the running gear in tip top condition, as he is out to be competitive. To do this the machinery must be maintained.

    A road ride will ride his bike... and sorry to say some just ride until something breaks!

    The race bike will have had the nuts rung out of the engine, sure. BUT at least the oil would have been changed on a frequent basis.

    So, if the engine runs well without odd noises, and the gearbox still changed smoothly, and all other parts are in good nick (like wheels, tyres and brakes) why not go for it?
    As for a step up from the 250... Well you will know if you feel comfortable with that one.
    If you don't feel comfortable, then don't.... No matter how good a deal it seems.

    Yes, get a very good mate who knows about bikes to check it out.
    I did that for one i was keen on in Auckland, and glad I did... it is the little things that add up to tousands fast!

    Very generalized comments here. Unless you know the owner(s) don't believe a word they tell you, do your own homework, which you have and has uncovered it has been:-

    A. Raced.
    B. Registered then written off.
    C. Rebuilt and registered again.

    I think it is way to over priced with this information on hand.

    I would take all the information you have to the seller and put a low offer on the table and walk away if they don't accept it.
    If you get it cheap then it will do you for a while otherwise keep looking and saving at the same time.

    The seller would probably know the history but will be playing dumb. I saw the exact same thing with a ZX6 for sale last year.
    I found out the history of the bike and informed the then current owner as it was not mentioned in his listing. He never updated the listing and when it expired still didn't list that information in listings afterwards as well.

    Trademe is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.
