    Auckland - Cape Reinga

    Hey guys,

I've been thinking of a ride up to the cape tomorrow. Are there any roads that you would reccomend to take up there which aren't just boring straights? Scenery and twisties in mind

    Thanks a million,

    STEVE

    -------------------------

    EDIT:

Went up to the cape on Saturday, blimey it was great fun. Pitched my tent at the Waitiki Landing camp ground for only $7 a night, this is the camp ground that is about a hundred metres away from the Cape's gravel road. The bike handled pretty alright over the gravel, average speed about 35-45km/h, even with a bald rear tyre. I met up with a fellow from Dunedin who had been touring the country (riding to reinga then to bluff), that was entertaining hearing his stories. Got dinner at the camp ground's takeaway store, $9 for a burger and chips, and I must say, it's the best burger I've had in yonks.

Woke up early the next morning with a plan to ride the bikes all the way to the lighthouse (the day before we got told off when we started to ride down). Was great fun.

Nothing much else to say, just keep an eye on how much gas you've got, make sure that you bring mosquito repellant with you, because those bastards sure bite up there, so many of them they sing like a chior around your tent.

    Pics!

P1: Just before I leave home, final goodbye picture!
    P2: Top Gear's THE STIG...
P3: Proof the bike got all the way up there
P4: Now my most favourite piece of road that I have ever travelled on, no cars either way! (look at the bike leaning on the grass though, ah!)

    CHURR!

How long are you planning? 2days or 3 days depends. Ask Todd

P.S. I can advice you a very nice accomodation in Kaitaia.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

Def do the Oakleigh to Paparoa Rd but Maungatapere to Kaikohe[Twin Bridges] has a lot of road works. The Waipoua Forest is awesome from Darga's to Opononi. SH10 is good as well at the mo. Aucks to Cape Reinga and back is too big for one day, I assume you know? Have fun!

I have you know I have done Cape Reinga and back many times in one day! But then ... it's me!

But then I like to be up before the sparrows get up to pee! And I love to ride ... and ride ... and ride!

Some suggestions, take 'em or leave 'em

    SH16 to Wellsford
SH12 to Dargaville, Opononi and the Rawene car ferry
Over the other side pick up the Broadwood Road to Kaitaia.

Come back via SH10 past Kerikeri

The last bit of road up to the Cape is slowly being sealed, so roadworks are possible.

You can get up there in less than 5 hrs but you won't be able to take in many of the sights. In 2007 one of my trips north turned to crap when 2 rental cars went off the metal back from the Cape right in front of me and a truck rolled closing SH1. It took me 12 hrs to get home.

It's not the best thing in the world when you pop up the tent and you're all alone though

Other than that, it's good when you can just go your own pace on a long journey.

I'm jealous - when I was there in November, I couldn't even get to the top of the access track because of the road works, and all the finger boards on the sign post had disappeared!!!!
Good run through Opononi and Dargaville, though.
