Question Good bike shops in Taupo...

    Hey all

I'm just about to move down that way, got a job down there, can't wait as I love the area!

However one thing I will miss about Auckland is the many good bike shops in the area that have been very helpful over the past year, with things such as tyres, tyre fitting, chain and sprocket replacements, brake pads etc....

So I'm just wondering if anyone from the Taupo area can recommend any good bike shops down there....even if they don't stock things like chain and sprocket sets for Hyosungs and tyres that suit the Hyosungs, but if there is a place that is able to at least install them for me if I was to get them sent down from Auckland?

Also if there are any group rides on around the area I can go and be a part of, that would be good too.

    Thanks a lot!

    Graham.

There's 3 shops in Taupo & a couple of mechanics, I've found Darryl August, the Suzuki/Kawasaki guys to be pretty good but I've never had mechanical work done by any of em.

Changing a chain & sprockets or brake pads ain't that hard, a work stand & a few basic tools & you should be able to do it yourself.

    Cheers

Cheers Clint, I can do brakepads myself, but do you need a chainbreaker to put on your own chain and sprockets?

Also is there anywhere around there or not too far off that does tyre fitting?

They've been fine for me when it comes to having what I need, esp. tyres, clutch cables, brakepads, chain & sprocket sets. Cycletreads and Spectrum Motorcycles are the main ones I have been to and besides a leaking fork seal after Spectrum were supposed to have fixed it on my old bike, they've been fine.

Yeh Darryl August is good for getting parts or gear. I have only had a tune up done there though so cant really comment on the mechanical side of things.I go through Steve at W.O.T Motorcycles and he certainly does good work IMO.

Cheers Psycho. That's cool if he let you borrow his chainbreaker. When the time comes to do mine again I may just do it myself as well and borrow it myself.

Gubb told me you have bought his bike -congratulations! I'm sure you won't be disappointed - it's one of the best looking Hyo's you'll ever see.

Darryl August m/c have been great to me. Don is an old-school parts guy that seems to know everything - nice change from spike-haired 20yr old mxers who think they know everything.
The best road in Taupo is the race track.
And you dont need a chain breaker - you need an angle grinder!

Cheers SVR. I look forward to doing an abundance of track days. Glad to hear there are good shops around.

Is there anything similar to the ATNR down the Taupo way I could join in on?

One other thing I wanted to ask - can anyone recommend a decent set of tyres for the Hyo GT250R? I've done at least 12,000 k's on my Battlaxes and my rear wheel is going square and wearing thin....front has done about 16,000 so may need to look at changing that too....I checked the pressures this morning and they were very low, so thinking it may be an idea to whack on a new set before leaving for Taupo this coming Saturday.

    Any recommendations would be great
