This is very tempting. I've been part way up Takapari Rd in a 4x4 when we lived in Palmy for a year. I'm definatly keen to have a look at SH43 if possible.

Only problem is getting to Welly at a reasonable hour. Was thinking Blenhiem Thurs night, Friday 6.25am sailing (5am start!!), disembark in Welly at 9.25am then go from there. From memory it is another 45hour mins till we get out to Kapati/PPram i.e. 10ish. How does this time work for you?

Other option is 10.25pm sailing on Thurs night i.e. get to welly at 1.35am Friday. Dont think there will be too many beds available at that hour of the night! Hmmm maybe we should just leave Chch lunchtime Thurs and get the 6.05 ex Picton 9.15 into Welly.

    Cheers R

Hey Mark I just looked on the map for a clearer idea of how far away it is from Welly!

Guess I'll be leaving Friday lunchtime on the KLX!!!!!

from there to Ohakune you would hardly see any seal

Apparently you can get from Ruarimu to SH43 via some interesting roads. You could easily have a very full day getting to Otorohnga

If I go (I plan to) I will do this route on Friday regardless
Now I REALISE just how damn far north this ride is, I reckon your all day Friday idea might be a good plan to keep in mind Mark.

Im sure you could get a group together for a friday frolic on the way up including the south island guys.

I have 2 spare beds left ( and plenty of floor space ) at my place on the Friday night if anyone needs somewhere to stay, PM me.
We live about 30 minutes from Otorohanga.

    Thumbs up

With the dates confirmed now I am pretty keen for this, but will be unable to commit till a bit closer to the date.

Also wondering is anyone driving down from auck for this ride? As I would really appreciate some help getting some gear down there, won't be much gear just a bag with some clothes etc to avoid having to carry a largeish pack on the bike.

Would also like to group ride down if anyone else is riding down from Auck.

Will prob book a cabin for myself, but if someone wants to share a cabin that is sweet.

Chris you could put a Ventura Pack Rack on the KLX - that's what I did for the SCAR - it worked fine with a 25L regular back pack strapped on to it on the riders side of the tall Pack Rack frame - the backpack waist strap easily securing the bottom of the pack round the indent in the frame shape, (or if you have the dosh just buy the pack that goes with the rack), and then you could still strap another bit of gear onto the horizontal part of the rack to the rear of your pack. I had no issues with this rack on the SCAR - it worked a treat! In fact a slightly taller/bigger capacity backpack would still have been fine, maybe 30/35L. I think my 50L backpack may have been too tall for the rack tho so left that at home and travelled light! I didn't carry a sleeping bag as we hired linen at the motor park but that would've easily gone in another gear bag onto the horizontal part of the rack.

Hope to see you on the ride!
