Me not bein the expert in any way of things of the tax type I got the impression that the way it works is that your tax is calculated on the basis that the amount you earn that pay period-week/fnight/month is what you earn every week of the year.

my concern with this was a Fair Go story a year or two back.

A woman had an assessment which indicated she was owed a couple of hundy from the last couple of tax years.

She duly accepted but instead of the expected money, got a letter from the IRD.
The letter stated that she had outstanding unpaid taxes of ~$100 from the early nineties, and with interest and fees, the IRD were chasing her for $1800+!

After Fair Go got involved, the IRD used "discretion" to wipe the original unpaid amount... without their intervention she was going to be screwed over.

I see from the small print for this tax refund refund site:
"The IRD when processing your return can automatically transfer refunds to deduct from arrears. This is beyond the control of TaxRefunds.co.nz, as this happens once the return has been submitted to the Inland Revenue Department. We will be notified by the IRD and will inform you accordingly"

I assume this is what happened to this woman - checked and saw an estimated refund, then IRD went to work to spoil the party.

You are perfectly right. That is why when you get a back-pay or bonus it could be taxed wrong. But it is easy to find out yourself if you need tax back.

Also... I've worked two jobs Last year... Do I add up the gross taxable earnings over the period of the applicable tax year all up?
    Damnit I hate big words.
Some people just can't seem to comprehend that they do not have the right to be unoffended in their lives.

On the site you just fill in your IRD number and it asks you a few questions like, do you have children, were you out of the country for part of the year, were you at school etc.
Then you just click through a few steps for each year = you only fill in the majority of the details once.
You don't have to fill out any actual wages/salary etc.

Oh and I only did 2007 and then went back a few days later and filled the rest of the years out. I think lots of people have been filling it out so it is taking a bit longer to process. Up to 20 days for the money to be processed by the IRD.

    Thumbs up

Wow that site is doing well and must be making a pretty penny for doing what I imagine to be little work.

You can file your own tax refund pretty easy without having someone take a commision. Go to http://www.ird.govt.nz/online-servic...e-request.html

then use this calculator work out if you should get a refund
    http://www.ird.govt.nz/calculators/t...l?id=righttabs

then if you are owed something, request a personal tax summary which will tell you your refund which you can then confirm and get your money. Don't request this first though because if you owe money you will get a bill. That's why you get the Summary first and use the calc. See, simple

Do it yourself. My last refund was $2300. That's almost $300 commission for them if I didn't do it myself (easy as).
