Joe, if we're doing that, why don't we start & fuel up from Martinborough instead of Featherston so its less kms to Ngawi/Cape Palliser?
I.e. avoid that backtracking cut across from the western road to the lake ferry road if you'd started in Featherston.

I know it only saves a few kms but those of us on little tanks might need that bit extra fuel once we've been all the way around Cape Palliser, plus we can get a decent latte in Martinborough to start the day right!
(and NO this has nothing to do with the Toppy's waitress! I'm thinking saving fuel only - honest!)
    Cheers, Dave

Fuel at Pirinoa is a nice move tho - do they actually have unleaded there or is it diesel only!

I would have thought that is trickier going downhill on a steep loose sandy rocky section ... once u start going u cant stop, correct, bailout, chickenout (not that I would but I could) ...
