The road is open between 28 December and 1 April each year. $15 for bikes gets collected at the Old Rainbow Homestead. Outside this open period there are locked gates just beyond Rainbow Ski Area turn-off and just before Coldwater Creek campsite (heading south). You need to call Star Holdings Ltd on (03) 545 7600 to arrange access. You pick up a key, pay some money, sign away all liability, and you get an envelope to post the key back when you finish.

    Rainbow info

    Cheers

Or if you are coming from the south (Hanmer Springs) you ring and get a key sent to you first then sign, pay and drop off the key after you've had all the fun. Watch out for THE corner if coming from the south

Just out of interest, is THE corner also tricky if you approach it from St Arnaud ?

Nup you can see the tyre tracks going off the road from there. Seriously tho it's ok. One thing that caught me out tho 1st time was that the gates can be invisible if you're not expecting them

I've hear rumours that if you contact DOC south Marlborough and it is not goose shooting season etc you might be able to get through. I'm keen to know if this is true so let me know how you get on if you try this.
