Thanks - p'haps it was just an engine after all

    According to chadwick:
    1983

TSS-engined T58-1 with rubber-mounted, eight-valve engine aimed at police use is designed. The TR6 is reduced to 600cc. A prototype water-cooled, 900cc bike called the Phoenix (the engine was also known as the 'Diana') is designed in early 1983 (a water-cooled, twin OHC vertical twin). Also, the Thunderbird was reduced to 600cc, and offered with twin carbs as the Daytona 600. Last year for the TSX. But Meriden's money was running out and car sales were rising while bike sales were dropping.

I'll hve a look around the place but I'm sure I've got more info here some place...

For what it's worth - the Thunderbird was reduced to 650cc not 600cc and was sold as a T65 I think. Apparenty it was a very nice bike and was highly sought after by riders. The odd example made it here but I've never ridden one.

Re the other. I think in the 60's there was a Norton project designed by charles udal that had extensive testing. I was a horrible heavy rattley OHC thing fitted into a cut down featherbed chassis. It sort of hung about like a bad smell for yonks and was even considered as a bonnie replacement but thankfully it was abandoned and work started of other options. There were several contenders. A modual V series where cylinders were added from a basic single learners up to a massive V5 (I think Hopwood did that one) and Norton played with the stepped piston 2 stroke (the Wulf) but went to the rotary (they had spend a fortune on licenses already).

Triumph did display a Pheonix at the NEC (from memory) and somehow it was connected to the earlier Udal bike (cleaned up or redeveloped) as I remember something in Bike about it but it was so obviously a prototype and fuggly no one seriously considered it.
