Cyclists in lycra

Isn't there some law against riding 2, or more, abreast ?

Ah, this old chestnut.

It's legal to ride 2 abreast. It's illegal to ride 3 abreast.

If 2 people are riding next to each other, and a 3rd overtakes, that's when people think cyclists are riding 3 abreast.

I have lots of years of experience of cycle bunch riding, and I have never seen a bunch ride at 3 abreast, except when passing. However, I hear all sorts of people who complain about cyclists riding "3 or 4 wide". Bullshit. It's just that people love to exaggerate when making a complaint.

Mostly those who complain just don't like having to share the road. Guess what, it's not compulsory to travel at 100, so get used to having to allow for those who can't.

Having seen the stupidity of the cyclists that ride the Port Hills I'm shocked more don't get squished every year. Especially on the way up to Sign of the Kiwi.

Mrs Oakie was coming down from the hill one day on her old (admittedly not very fast Eliminator 250) when she got passed by a cyclist who was hurtling down the hill.

I reflected today and thought that perhaps I was only remembering bad incidents and that perhaps cyclists were generally good and I was being unfair. Alas within 6 minutes of leaving work today I came across three lycra clad Mr Indestructables cycling up Centaurus Road three abreast and had to watch as a four wheel drive, in order to pass them safely, dipped his right wheels over the centre line into the oncoming traffic.
I don't begrudge cyclists space on the road at all but just wish they'd keep themselves (and me) safe.
I should admit that it is personal for me as I once came across a cyclist in the countryside who had just been hit from behind by a sheeptruck. Spent 40 minutes doing CPR with another passerby but she died of her injuries. I don't want to be involved in anything like that again. I can still see her empty eyes and hear her partner's voice screaming her name 18 years later...

Last time I saw a bunch of lycra clad road warriors in Palmy they were in a big ass group hogging most of a lane, most of the tin top traffic were swinging into the other lane to avoid them, which made it pretty dodgy for me with 2 lines of traffic in 1.5 lanes and me in the gutter (going in the other direction to them on my MTB).. they passed some kids who were abusing them (which I found rather hard case), the kids shouted to me "you are going the wrong way, your mates are back there", "fuck that" I says, "those guys are homos".

Which they are.. Fuckin roady's.

Often it's difficult to hear a car/bike approaching from behind. Most cyclists appreciate a polite toot on the horn from 100M behind and will move over.
A blast on the Stebels from 1M behind will probably have the opposite effect.
Be kind to our 2 wheeled bretheren, when we run out of oil, we'll all be riding them.

Im not saying ban all cyclists from MY roads, im just saying they should not be allowed on certain roads for saftey reasons.

Before all you lycra clad homo's start whining, I think there is some merit in this suggestion.

I think we should ban motorcycles from certain sections of road for saftey[sic] reasons as well.

There seems to be quite a high crash rate for motorbikes on SH25/SH25A around the Coromandel. A ban on motorcycles would be an excellent idea around here.

A good saddle / bike fit goes a long way to helping the "pain". Also pays to build up to the big rides which builds up your strength / endurance. If you're tired you'll tend to sit on the saddle more increasing the PAIN IN YOUR ARSE.
Are you doing the K2 this year?
