    Shell Fuel Rip Off

The "new formula" is utter rubbish.

I've used 3 tanks of the 96 Octane stuff now, and prior to filling with Shell's "new formula" I was getting between 270 and 275 kms per tank before the fuel gauge started flashing. That was filling at completely random petrol stations.

On the Shell "new formula" 96 Octane petrol I can just squeak to 240kms.

I'll try BP 96 for 3 tanks. I'll let you guys know if it makes a difference.

Use BP Ultimate in my F100, it 'pinks' less and if anything the mpg had improved.

[Edit] I think it's listed as 98 octane.

    Downside? It costs more.

I've had the same issue, Jim. Using the shell stuff I've had the worst mileage ever (on the Triumph). Dont have a car anymore so cant try it in that.

No I didn't actually. I didn't expect to get worse mileage though. There was another thread on the miracle Shell formula where it was suggested that people try it out and report back.

I use 98, pretty certain that it gives me better mileage than standard 96 or 91. Haven't tried the Shell shite, but if it's even worse, don't wanna.

Smells like a corporate PR disaster coming up, they're always fun.

Did you really think they had changed their formula on anything other than the advertising?

Did you really think they don’t all get the gas from the same refinery?

Did you really think they don’t horsetrade & sell to each other when they run out of stock?

Why are you running 96 anyway? Most bikes are setup to run 91 so they can be exported to all markets without changes. Using higher octane will not help & only hinder. Many find this with AvGas on racebikes. ‘course it’s better. Well. . . not often so on a std bike.

If your bike pinks then by all means run higher octane.

The calorific value (energy content) of a higher octane gas may well be lower as there are heaps of aromatics to boost octane. Throttle response may suffer as a result too.

Easy there, Jim! He's just demonstrating the general cynicism most feel towards the fuel companies.

I don’t think they’ve formulated it to be worse. In fact I don’t think they’ve formulated it at all. You get a base gas refined at the best price they can & add aromatics & detergents etc to bring it up a std that they can sell it for, adjusted to whether it is 91, 96 or 98.

The base gas will vary. Also the type of driving or riding you do can vary heinously. I just did a trip (Auckers) in the van & thought “heck the mileage had improved from last time I did it”, but thinking back there was favourable weather (esp compared with last time) & Bec did a bunch of the driving & is less lead footed than me.

+ you can vary the amount of gas you put in quite a bit.

All I’m saying is it is hard to get objective measurements.
