Sydney judge says speed camera convictions invalid.

A Sydney motorist has successfully challenged a speeding ticket arguing the camera photograph was not valid as evidence because the digital speed cameras are only calibrated once a year.
The judge agreed, saying to be valid they should be calibrated daily.
He went on to say every motorist snapped in New South Wales since 1999 has been improperly convicted.

Heard that on the news. I noticed police here were quick to say that doesn't apply to ours. Different rules or standards I presume.

Entirely believeable, not only that, but the radars and lasers operated by the police, are frequently operated in a manner that contravenes the operators manual, eg, coming aorund a corner, nearby big signs, between buildings on both sides of the road.
It needs to all be challenged, but our government being what they are, they will just run through a law to remove the possibility of challenging guilt.

I was advised by an IANZ Auditor, that the speed laser thingees in the cars are not able to be calibrated, but the NZ Government just amended the legislation to say they don't have to be.

Yeah it doesn't apply to NZ coz all they have here is a 1970's polaroid camera in a box then they guess the speed - hence you don't get demerit points for camera ofences.
There's nothing wrong with speed cameras that a well aimed pie can't fix anyway - we used to use scotch round pies back home cos they fitted quite well over the lens aperture.
Good time to go on a motorbike holiday in Oz though innit?

Heard of somebody in Helengrad that has done a few fixed ones with a paintball gun. Nails them right in the lens, ha ha.
And no, I don't know them, but I wouldn't like to be in his shoes if he gets sprung!

Used to have fun with a speed Camera in Glasgow - it was set up in a 30mph zone at the bottom of a 2 mile long downhill section of dual carriageway. We used to be out training on our road bikes (with pedals and no engines) and we'd write stuff on our butt cheeks that was somewhat defamatory towards our friends in the constabulary. As we were descending we'd pull our shorts down enough to display our arses with the aforementioned messages and crank the bikes up to about 42-45mph.
Always wondered what would happen if a policeman caught me speeding on a bicycle anyway - I had no drivers licence at all back then so they couldn't do anything with points.

well everone that gets a speed camera ticket should defend it . i e . plead not guilty and take it to court . imagine a few thousand defended cases . the bloody judges wouldn;t be able to handle them all . the way the fuzz goes through their staff there wouldn;t be cops who were still employed . they really are scraping the barrel . once we looked up to the nz police now we avoid them . soeed cameras save nil lives . if they were any good each driver or rider would be stopped when caught speeding in order to stop them killing someone further on . kiwis have been conned buy super helen..her labour govt. need the money for sure . remember her down south with the police escort .......jase the ace .. x.t.o.

I Saw A Guy Calibrating A Speed Camera With A Tuning Fork , He Held His Hand Over The Lens So It Didnt Take A Photo Of Any Cars, The Speed Camera Registers 70 Kmh When The Tuning Fork Was Struck In Front Of The Unit , He Said They Did It Before And After Each Session , This Was A While Ago Tho

Yeah, all radar devices can be tuned with a tuning fork, so its correct for mobile radar. I bet that if a radar unit failed the test it would just be withdrawn and repaired without tickets being dumped. Has anyone evey written to the plice asking how many calibs are done and how many are failed ?
Also, if the cop car is not parked parallel to the direction of travel of the vehicle it will read wrongly.

Next time you see any police calibrations being performed, ask questions, ask to watch.. Its all very interesting and very open.
