Speed doesn't kill people.
Stupidity kills people.
It is interesting to note that in Israel, where virtually every 18 year old mall rat lugs around an SMG (and could get in serious trouble for leaving it at home), firearms-related violence is unheard of.
"People are stupid ... almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People's heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true ... they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so all are easier to fool." -- Wizard's First Rule
Dunno about you lot but I'd rather take a tazer than a bullet.
Was the idea behind the tazer not to aid the cops in apprehending violent criminals - like the very popular P fueled loon? A few 9mm pistol rounds would be less effect against someone like this than a tazer.
Do you people honestly believe that all the cops given these are gonna go nuts and start shooting people over petty traffic infridgements?
I havn't been following it all in depth but from what I've seen I am under the impression that not every cop is gonna just be handed out with a tazer, only those who have some experience under their belt and a track record to support.
Oh and Dawnrazor, those rubber things don't look like bullets, more like mini dildos. Or do they use artillery rubber rounds as well?![]()
YES.
DID YOU EVER EXPECT TO SEE ON THE NEWS A GUY IN HANDCUFFS ON THE GROUND GETTING PEPPER SPRAYED WHEN THE PIGS ANOUNCED THEIR GETTING PEPPER SPRAY , AND THATS JUST THE ONE THAT WAS CAUGHT ON FILM IMAGINE THE ONES WE HAVENT SEEN , AND WHERE DID THAT GO AND WAS THE PIG FIRED? NO HE WASNT . IF THE PIGS HAVE IT THEYLL ABUSE IT
Rodney King was pulled over for a traffic infringement.
Yes, I'm afraid I do. Not all cops of course, and not for petty traffic offences. But I'd be confident that the Tasers (or the threat of them) will be used to enforce compliance from a lot of people who are not criminals in any ordinary sense of the world
F'instance - at present there's a picket line outside the distribution centres of a major supermarket chain. A big Corporate. As in BIG. Corporate is angry, of course, so , naturally there are heaps of police in atendance to escort blacklegs through the picket line (try getting even one cop if you're being mugged though)
Anyone want to bet that a similar situation in 6 months time, the police won't be using Tasers on the strikers? Certainly Big Corporate will be pushing them to do it, and police High Command pay LOTS of attention to such requests
Similarly - anyone remember the demonstrators that were illegally removed by the police on the instructions of Helen, when they embarrased the Chinese PM a while ago? Quick zap with a Taser, much more effective
In this respect the Taser is much worse than a gun. No cop is going to be bold enough to actually shoot a striker or demonstrator. But a tasering, no visible marks to speak of, no (hopefully) permanent effects. Like pepper spray it will become the modus operendi for dealing TO (not with) anyone who pisses off a cop.
I would predict that not more than 20% of Taser use will be against people that the general public would classifyas "criminals".
And maybe not petty traffic offences. But I'll lay odds that within the year you can reckon on a tasering as a matter of course if y'do a runner.

If of course you truly do deserve the punishment then try to sit back and enjoy it - electric shocks have been known to cause erections and even ejaculation.
Have fun.

Ixion You Should Start A Post On That Progresive Group Protest, Progresive Are Bunch Of Cunts , They Say They Cant Pay Better Wages But They Syphon A Shit Load Of Money Off Back To Aussie, Also They Monopolised The Market By Buying Woolworths Then Steadily Put The Prices Up
I think the cops are getting Tazers because if they shoot the bad guys with a gun, they get shat on by the media, if they pepper spray them, they get shat on by the media, and now they try a Tazer, and what do you know?, they are getting shat on by the media..... there's a pattern emerging here.
When a man works in a noisy saw mill, he deserves earmuffs to protect his hearing, when a lady works an arc welder at an engineering shop, she deserves a pair of goggles to protect her eyes, as does the meat-worker deserve the steel mesh gloves to protect his hands............. cops deal with some seriously fucked up and highly dangerous individuals every day, and even OSH can't minimise the risks they face, so why do we make them out to be arseholes when they want, what we have all come to expect?.
Fairs fair guys, let the poor bastards do their job.
Homer you shot the zombie Flanders !

But the problem is not the tasers, the REAL problem is that our country obviously has a great problem within the policing system. Whilst there are many cops that are enforcers of the law and protectors of justice in every sense of the word, it does sound like there is a large minority that is corrupt. This is the true worry.
I understand the Police cannot be 100% perfect all the time, but we should damn well expect them and everything assosciated with them (ie the comms centre) to be very close to perfect.
If they are not, (personally I believe they are falling very short), then our policing system is failing us. We should rather be protesting and bitching about the disfunctionality of our policing system at its core instead of focusing on things like giving them more power to enforce.
If the problem at it's core is addressed properly through example by better training and greatly improved screening of candidates then giving our police force more power will only serve the public good, allowing them to address the real criminal issues that harm our country.
I'm probably being unrealistic but I really believe that if this could work, it could work in our country.
