The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the greatest driving road in the world. Stretching for 7.3 miles and climbing nearly 4,000 feet, it boasts 60 corners and a surface so smooth that it would flatter a racetrack. It could easily be described as the eighth wonder of the world, but almost nothing is known about its creation.

The road is cut into the Jebel Hafeet mountain, the highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, the oil-rich Persian Gulf state. The mountain spans the border with Oman and lies about 90 minutes' drive southeast of the thriving city of Dubai. It looks down upon a dusty, desert landscape that belies a nation of astonishing wealth.

Shouldnt be too dusty up on a mountain. Rain and wind removes dust from them.

bet'ch'ya that rain would be dumping nice red dust on it, and that wind would be bringing in dust to fill the gaps the rain missed!!

growing up in northern Italy, we'd often have to wash our car after rain, 'cos it'd be covered in dust from North Africa!!

Perhaps the real, unspoken reason for the road's existence is to be found a mile from the hotel. There, sitting on top of the mountain, is a huge palace belonging to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the current ruler of the Emirates. His face also adorns a huge banner announcing the entrance to the road and it's under his watch that it was constructed. This incredible feat of engineering is actually no more than a giant driveway. It's enough to make Bill Gates green with envy.

So any rich NZ people want to live at the top of the Coromandel?

Well having spent some time throughout the middle east, the last place on earth you would ride a bike would be the middle east, why ? to damn hot, okay if ya want to wear no gear, but with leathers you would last 30 mins then you would be dehydrated to hell. How the GP guys do it beyond me

They wear a liquid cooled vest to keep their core temperature down with the pump and radiator system in their racing hump.

Although that's the bike I'd really like to get next, the RSV-R would probably be a better bet for this road. It's not really twisty enough to make it true SM territory. I'd love to give it a go on either, but!

What about registering them for the road? Any word on that? I know you are allowed to in parts of Europe and some American states, but what about in NZ?

I'd be keen as for one of those as a commuter (imagine it! fark . . .), but they have high service requirements and the manual even states that they shouldnt be used on the road. Defeats the purpose of putting lights etc on it though if you ask me.

this one came with plates & lights and all... but there's a dedicated 'race ready' model too.
apparently it needs new rings after 60hrs or something crazy like that!!
