The Paekakariki Hill Road gone forever?

You may be interested in this….

On the radio this morning while I was commuting in the Starlet...The Kapiti Coast Council said that they are considering NOT reopening the Paekakariki Hill road to normal traffic. It may be open as a private road. Ie no through traffic, just property owners etc. Apparently it's costing nearly $500,000 to build walls etc but it would cost bugger all to leave it single lane unsealed etc

Motorcycle thrill riding aside – what sort of goddan country is this when we have lost the ability to build / modify / maintain a bloody road FFS…

    SAD – just plain sad….

In my opinion, the council has dragged it's heels for weeks to see if anyone complains and then floated this to see what would happen, no moaning, no road... Spineless, Arseholes....

So contact them through their website and tell them what you think....

The only alternative northern outlet to SH1 on the west coast side I thought would have added some value to the region. Particularly when somebody transgresses on the "Killer Highway" and gums everything up for eons.

Yes - we have used it many times for that but I guess the wire rope barrier will reduce the head ons so why keep the road useable?

    I'm still pissed off....

It might make it easier to organise a bike sprint through it ?

    (Looks for the silver lining)

That road is great, but I've seen too many cages cross the centre line for me to go through there flat out anymore.

Heard it on Coast FM this morning.

I've left a message for them to contact me - thus far it might just be a fishing expedition. However, I was very suspicious given the time taken to repair the road.

The up side is, traffic flows through Paekakariki easier.... at 15kph....

OK - here is the good oil.

KCDC Roading manager sent a report to Council with various Options. One of which is closing the road, another reducing the service level or full restoration to two lanes.

KCDC is having to fund repairs to this road and it's expensive - probably more than they can afford and Transit is not keen on the road, not keen to the stage of quietly asking if it could be closed because that would make it a lot easier to upgrade the Paekakariki interection.. However I'll be a hat full of farty arseholes that the political side of transit (the board and management) would crap themselves if such a thing became public.

The real villian here is Transit NZ because they do not value the road and will not contribute to it's upkeep. Every Kapiti Coaster however knows damn well that it is the ONLY alternative path in and out of the place when SH1 dies.

So - what we need to do is send shitty letters and emails to newspapers / radio stations, Transit, local MP's etc demanding to know what the heck is going on with these wankers at transit.

These people killed the twisties before the Rimutakas and won't be happy until everyone drives at 20kph in a volvo station wagon in an orderly fashion.

Come on, lets send a few letters.... emails what ever....

The problem for me is though, that i cannot think of a valid reason for myself apart from the fact that im a hoon and thats what I use this road for. I am so damn upset.

I heard similar on the radio news. Said the options were; private road or one way only (obviously the direction that I choose to travel in, how else do they intend to decide, flip a coin?)
Just as well the taxpayers of NZ and purchasers of petrol have never contributed a single cent to the State to pay for road building. If we had we would have reason to be upset. Wouldn't we.

Sigh. I wound up a few K Coasters today about this.

You'll probably get told - Transmission Gully will be completed in 30 years, so there's no point patching up a dodgy alternate route.

Nothing to lose in contacting Transit though. Theres a few tourist spots on that road.

Recently when Wellington City Council was considering lowering the speed limit through Tawa they called for submissions, it was posted here & I along with many others made submissions. You would think that KCDC would do the same in this case. I'll keep an eye on this thread over the next couple of days before I go randomly writing an email.

They should seriously consider making the road closed to all but residents & motorcyclists, it's been great these last few months with s.f.a traffic, although I haven't gone past the Summit coming from Pauatahanui. I was talking to the guys at BP Paekak a few weeks ago & they said the damage was a major but to close it permanently?, Yeah right!!
