    Bloody SPCA!

Our old male cat had to be put to sleep a few weeks ago and as we only have the one cat now, we decided to get a pair of kittens from the same litter, a male and a female. I went to the SPCA a couple of weeks ago and asked if they had any kittens and was shown a gorgeous mother cat with two ginger male and one black tortie female kittens. They weren't ready to be rehomed yet as they were still in quarantine, so I said we'd take one male and the female. I took Andy in the following day to see them and he said he was keen on two, so I left my name and number with the SPCA. I told them I would pick them up after the 20th as they said they would be ready "in a couple of weeks" so this morning I rang them and planned on calling in and paying for them and collecting them next week. "Sorry", I was told, "the female has gone - yes, we were aware someone wanted the female but I assumed the person who came in was you" - well, NO, it wasn't me! I am so pissed off because we were all set to collect them - had the new cat cage, bedding, food, flea and worm treatments, etc and now no kittens! We don't want two males so I'm going to try the animal rescue shelter later and see if they have any as I am too annoyed to go back to the SPCA now.

Try Cats protection league - thay have so many... they'll try and get you to take more than two!
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

I want an Egyptian Sphynx cat. Why wont anyone let me have one

To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods

They had someone right there and now who wanted the kitten with money in hand....and a phone number of someone who ''said'' they wanted a kitten last week - their job is to place kittens into good homes...and they did.Broken promises are the reason they have kittens.

If all they need is for someone to have money then I don't think they care if the cats go to a good home or not.

Where did you read that into my post? They have to fill out a questionare form, history of past animals etc. They try to put them into good homes, and also try and recover as much of the costs as possible...in this day and age charities go broke.

Cats Protection League as Colapop says - this is kitten season....anyone who wants a kitten can have a dozen,I've got three, and a mother cat too.A couple of weeks ago I didn't have a cat!

Mother cat and kittens were in quarantine and we weren't even allowed in to see them - could only peer through the door. I said I definitely wanted the female and we would "most likely" take a male as well. I took Andy in the following day and we confirmed we DEFINITELY wanted the female and one of the males, WHEN they were ready to be rehomed, which we were told would be in two weeks. I said we'd like to collect them after the 20th and I rang on the 21st to arrange collection. I got our last cat off them, have donated over $100 in cash and also cat food to them in the past year - and would have happily paid for both kittens prior to collecting them but was told to wait and pay on the day. So intead of finding homes for TWO kittens, they would rather home one and take their chances with the others.

What annoys me the most is that I posted a thread on a pets and animals forum and got attacked by the manager of this SPCA. Andy was with me when I confirmed we wanted both and arranged when we would collect them.

Sorry, they have done their dash with me, will get one two from an animal shelter or approach vet on Tuesday as they are always trying to find homes for kittens. Worse thing is, the woman and her husband know us both and had our contact details so it's not like we just rang up and she had no way of getting hold of us. If she had called, I would have been down there within half an hour to pick up and pay for both kittens.

Between 6 and 8 million cats and dogs enter shelters each year, I am sure there will be more.

You're right, I'm just disappointed with this process. I'd bought a new cat cage, got flea and worm treatements (because the last one we got from the SPCA was riddled with fleas and had the worst worms I'd ever seen in such a young kitten), new bedding, kitten food, new pet bowls, and had the money ready to pay for the two kittens.

The funny thing is, the males were ginger and neither of us was keen on a ginger cat but we figured, save two from the same litter, who cares what colour it is. Hopefully two moggies wanting a home with people who will spoil them rotten are out there waiting patiently!

I can imagine that once you knew what you wanted you had your heart set on it. When something outside your control lets you down, thats hard. So sorry that you missed out but I praise your effort of attempting to take on two cats and also for supporting the SPCA. I am sure that although they may have let you down this time, you can still see the good work that they do and will continue to support that. Which I also give you praise for, well done
