Re-registering a bike after it's been written off

Does anyone know the procedure of re-registering a bike after it has been written off. A friend was telling me I had to get a new vin number and plates etc. I am totally ignorant on this matter so any advice / knowledge (also costings) received would be much appreciated.

LTSA will tell you all you need to know

All you need to do is get it fixed (whatever the problem was that wrote it off)

Then take it in to On Road Compliance and get it tested (like a VERY detailed WOF) if they pass it they can register it on the spot and give you a new number plate right away so you can ride it home...

All up compliance & Rego costs about $400

Try this, http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/09.html although it says "This factsheet covers light vehicles that were previously registered in New Zealand" so not sure if light vehicle covers bikes or not.

Presume it was written off and de-registered by an insurance company? and you have bought the wreck back from them?
Get in touch with LTSA to see what the vehicle status is, why it was deregistered, get a copy of the insurance assessment to see why it was written off and take it from there.
The main reason vehicles are deregistered after being written off is to stop them from being put back on the road. ie vehicles with structural and safety issues getting a wof and rego and next day back on the road. Applies to bikes as well as cars. If its just cosmetic damage no problem, just money. .

Total. But if people didn't add in the 400 alternative options and arising complications then every thread on kb would be about 3 posts long and the site totally redundant. This is the fun part!

Personally I'd tape the flange to my cubicle and get it tested to 400kPa by the hospital.

Its not hard but it can get complicated. In the "old" days you could wander down to the PO, sign a declaration regarding origin and walk out with new registration and plates for a non existent vehicle. Make up your own frame and engine no's while you're at it.
It meant any piece of junk could be put on the road or you could have a spare set of plates and rego for whatever you liked.
With the easing of import restrictions, the international dodgy vehicle trade, the emphasis on safety, modified vehicles etc the whole registration system has been overhauled to make it harder to get stolen and unsafe vehicles on to the road.
So as to how hard it is, like most things nowadays, it depends.
