Sounds really unfair to me. I drive through there a lot and from my observations of the drivers on our winding roads they all had valid reasons for crossing the centreline. For one- half were texting. The other half were either having similar world changing conversations on their cell phones like 'Sharon, what colour skirt do think goes best with my blah blah top?'or they were stuffing their faces or changing the CD.
From driving around Wgtn it has become quite clear to me that using a cell phone exempts you from all legislative and social laws and any form of common courtesy.

Go Mr Plod . I would give you lots of green bling if I could. This is a fantastic display of targetting a core cause of crashes- lazy and bad driving habits.

    Revenue gathering?
Fuckin' hell, that's what the cops should be doing. I bet the wanker who claimed that was pinged by them.
    They can do SH16 next.

I have been known to clip apex's on the bike when they are white line only and am far from the perfect driver/ rider but try to show some consideration to other road users..ftr

As far as the quote...... I thought double yellow lines mean't no overtaking, not do not cross unless you can squeeze though the gap...Is this not the same person who was passed by a 18 wheeler in their lane and pushed off the road ? which was not alright but them passing vehicles in the narrow gap between vehicle and double yellow lines in the same lane (most likely on the open road, higher speed) is OK....... Why do other motorists get !@#$ed off with motorcylists..Wait a minute, there are two sets of rules, its ok to sit 2 metres off the bike in front, indicating is optional, use any lane even if there isn't one..but if a car was to do that

They are putting a few double yellows on what is deemed high accident zones up here,Maramarua etc.......When the traffic is flowing at speed on those sections which it normally does, how hard is it to wait a km or so to pass when able too.? . In bumper to bumper on yellows i have had many cars pull right over to let me past, chance taken since they knew i was there but passing in the same lane is not legal unless it is in the road code somewhere ?..

hell I have been known to pass when there are yellow lines, but I do it legit, by remaining on the left side of the yellow, how ever this does sometimes mean passing close.

This doesn't affect me - my bike and riding is too gutless to overtake anything but a parked car

Trouble is, round Maramarua, since the Insane Yellow Paint Maniac got to work, it's not a matter of waiting for a kilometre, more like 20 kilometres.

And , yes, it is legal to overtake in the same lane, to the left of the yellow line, so long as you do not cross it

    From the Road Code
You can pass at a no-passing line if:
you stay on your side of the solid yellow line, and
you can see 100 metres of clear road in front of you for the whole time while you are passing, and
the lane is wide enough for two vehicles

and to further point out from Ixion's post, to be an overtaking move... you have to be on the right of the vehicle (and obviously the left of the yellow line)

It has to be legal, otherwise you technically couldn't pass a parked car, if the road had one wide lane, without white lines for parking...

I will presume that quote is from here http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/key.../passing3.html and the pic with it seems to show a car pulled over to the far left, perhaps in a situation where it is driving well below the posted speed limit. The following car can then pass at a safe speed.
So reading between the lines, that says if a motorcycle can squeeze between the yellow line and car even if it is in the centre of the lane,go for it ?
If the car were to pull over to the left allowing you to pass then it would be the same as suggested in the road code? which i have had done many times.
I can guarantee if you and good wife were tootling along in your automobile and i passed you at any speed on my TL in tha 2 foot gap this side of a double yellow, you wouldn't be thanking me,interpretation of the rules and all that

Of course you are right about some of the yellows being excessive distance but given i would hardly fire the TL up for a ride of less that a few hundred kms, i survive.... SH16 with double yellows is on the cards for sure.

If you are passing on the right of the car, and do not cross the yellow lines, and do not speed, it is completely legal. Well, to the best of my understanding (have to add that caveat you see)

However, I always maintain, if a cop WANTS to roger you, he/she will find something.

edit: some cagers do not like us splitting, but from the legal view, its basically the same thing. However, if a car were to swerve, and try to block etc, you may end up over the line... however, you would hope the car would get done...

I thought the law was "Road user with most wheels gets benefit of the doubt" in which case we're all fucked whatever we do.

Well, I said it was legal, not necessarily wise. And hopefully if I were tootling along in my automobile I would have seen you coming up from behind in my mirror and moved left for you. Unless it was the Alfatoy, in which case even a TL might be put to it to do any passing.

What do you do if you have a journey of less than a few hundred kms to do? Walk?

Walk ?..... The closest i have come to that is a run in the car

Four wheeled transport is different now. I have had hotted up cars from day one starting with a Mini Cooper built by my Dad,various others and by 21 years old was driving a 6.4 litre 4 speed BB Mustang and so it carried on,then going to turbo cars much later on.... What do i drive now,a small japanese stationwagon, slow and so stress free.......Speeding,forget it...easy to keep to the limit,no drama's...(Well ok,one speed camera and one nasty Matamata cop ticket)...Best thing i did was remove the temptation..
On top of that being South Auckland,i can park it anywhere without being worried about getting a dent in it,cheap third party insurance, throw bike parts, tools in the back etc etc..It even has a auto trans (first time for me)..Did i mention stress free.

Any more of it appears I'll be breaking out the infractodiddler. Enough already
