    Wellington (Upper Hutt) mentor please

Finally after 3 months have got me a bike (hyo GT250R), havent been near one since BHS back in August. So pretty keen to get a mentor to show me good safe riding techniques.
Living in Timberlea, Upper Hutt (the Blue Mitre10 Dreamhome 2005)

So any mentors in the area please?
I'm available weeknights after 6:30pm or Sundays.

    Cheers
    Danny

Turn up at Avalon Park on a Wednesday night at around 6ish and I'm sure you'll either find a mentor or at least a group of riders that are happy to just cruise along.

By the duck pond or is still the elephant pond?
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.

Hey Bull welcome to the fun. As well as getting a mentor - bloody good idea - have a look at BuckBucks threads on what he has done in terms of learning. He obviously has more time/freedom than others of us to get out riding regularly but he makes some good points in terms of things to concentrate on and practice. Good luck, have fun and be safe.
Why would anyone choose to drive a car!

Gidday Bull, and RnB Fan thanks for the comment.

Bull, you're in a good location to ride over to Maymorne, Mangaroa, Whitemans Valley, however at this early stage avoid the Mangaroa Hill and also down the Silverstream/Pinehaven don't attempt these winding roads yet.

Stick to the Maymorne end for say a total of 10 hours riding. Say from SH2 into Maymorne and out to the rail overhead bridge. Then in time head up to the local school at Managaroa and back. These two suggestions, as you may know do not have any major winding road but does have a deep dip for a few hundred metres out to the right beyond the overhead bridge.

Before you get out to Maymorne Bull, spend 5 - 10 hours riding time in the little Birchville area there are some good little short streets/cul de sacs, concentrate on what you did at the BHS, focus, heads up, clutch and brake [front and back] and take your time. I would not recommend you venture out the Akatarawa.

Have a read through the training log I kept for the first 6000km.

    http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...ad.php?t=30010

Get your hands on some books from the library and read up, and condition yourself to be disciplined in your approach, each time you go out to ride, you say to yourself 'I am going out to practise...and here are the two things today I will focus on.'

Enjoy your riding and I hope you can get a mentor to review with you your progress after say 4 to 6 weeks and then periodically after that. At the moment it is all new and therefore progress in your own time and you will discover the joy of being at one with your bike.

    Heads Up and Enjoy

    Cheers All for the advice,

Buckbuck - will take your advice and head over that way for a ride, youre right about the dip over in maymorn(very deep). Any reccomendations of suitable books from the library?
Read all of your logs when you were posting them and was really impressed with your dedication to learning in stages.

Bike arriving Monday night from TSS (awesome guys especially Fergus and Stu) wasnt too keen to ride it from lower hutt to upper hutt just yet.

    Here are a few books:
The Biker's Bible - Graham Allardice
    Proficient Motorcycling - David Hough
    Total Control - Lee Parks

The Biker's Bible is a New Zealand book and available from the Hutt City Libraries.

I tried the next two but these are not in the library index. Have a look at Amazon.com and you may be able to pick these two up from there either new or second hand.

Enjoy Monday it will be a day you will never forget. When my Golf November Two Five Zero landed at home it was a buzz.

    Heads Up and Enjoy

    Welcome Bull.

You'll meet some excellent people, and have on the Wednesday night ride. Just remember, there are no dumb questions. Only some people (i.e: Fat jim) will give you dumb answers.

However in saying that, if you think of something don't be afraid to PM guys like Uncle B & Deano, these guys are some of the best guys to talk to when wanting advice. They have been there and done that, and should be able to point you in the right direction.

    See you out there.

    Hi Danny,

I've added you to my buddy list so you can get my contact details from my profile.

I'd be happy to offer some assistance and advice. I've also got Twist of the Wrist 2 in PDF format if you'd like to have a read of that.

And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Cheers Riffer, had added you also as a buddy. No harm in having a couple of learn-ed riders keen to help me out.

    To All:
Uncle B has put his hand out to take me on as understudy so im all sorted for the mentoring side of things. Cant wait to get involved on the wednesday evening rides and hopefully shouldnt be too long till im up to it. Weather bit shabby today so may have to settle for sitting on the bike in my lounge and getting some photos for my KB profile. Sure my 3 boys will be keen to get on it too.

Again thanks all for the comments and really look forward to meeting you guys in the flesh.

Gidday Bull, you're in good hands. Uncle B monitored my progress and I often reflect on things we covered.

Nah, Just Kidding, Uncle B is the best mate, you are in very safe and wise hands there.
I'm jealous that I haven't been riding enough since my mentor session with him that I am due for another yet!
