Sunday 19 November - Where Did You Ride Today and What Did You Practice?

Usually get this post out earlier on Sunday. Actually I didn't ride today, but practised my driving, approach, and putting.....

Seriously though practised through this week and very pleased to get the Restricted Licence test pass.

All you newbies, take your time, practise, DEE-FAP Discipline - Focus Attention, and Personal commitment - throught the first six months.

    Heads Up and Enjoy

Did my noob run around the streets of upper hutt and threw in a visit to kinglsley heights too, out for about an hr and covered about 40km.
Practiced downshifting smoothly without dropping the clutch out. Also practiced my searching skills riding through town - looking for possible hazards. Oh and the whole stare at drivers as they approach intersections to check if they see me. Also increased my cornering speed and leaning that little bit further. Still only 50k zone so no extreme speeds from this noob. Got my first wave from fellow biker today - came after one biker snobbed me. Nether the less i waved to 3 riders and recieved 1 wave back. Good Times!

Bull - Well done on your practice today: what I am about to say may cause some debate:

    1. Do you stare at the driver of the cage, or
    2. Do you look at the front wheel of the cage. ? ?

One philosophy is if you want to have eyeball to eyeball, lift your visor and stare.

The other philosophy is if you are looking at his wheel then your peripheral vision is not taken out.

By looking at the driver, you are expecting a visual acknowledgement - unfortunately that may be the vehicle moving out in front of you when you have not realised and less than a second could mean the difference between ... well you know.

Keep the practise up and good to put yourself in the hazard strategy region around the Upper Hutt, a good wee district in town to ride.

    Heads Up and Enjoy

I practised pacing up and down because my Volty still doesn't have its new chain and sprockets so I can't ride it yet.

I also practised watching other riders when I was out in my car, and noticing that the vast majority of them seem to have good skills - checking with their heads not just mirrors before changing lanes, indicating, positioning themsleves safely on the road. Noticing all those things helps to reinforce them for me.

I did see one guy riding on the motorway with no gloves. He had all the other proper gear and was wearing a backpack so I wonder if he'd got changed somewhere and left his gloves behind accidentally. I hope he (and all the other bikers I saw) got home safe & sound.

I practiced shreding race tyres and showing GSXR1000s a clean pair of heels around the Coro' roads. I practiced a couple of wheelies (not as many as I'd have liked)

    Concentrated the whole time.

Went to Greytown for a drink. Was going to avoid the Taka's with Toast Martinborough being on, but traffic wasn't all that bad. Practised scrubbing off 30kph to avoid getting a ticket.

I found out I don't know how to corner very well, when going a little faster then I am used to .

I then practiced my take offs, in town. Went past a whole group of bikers in town, but no wave... maybe it was my L plate? Practiced going around 'roundabouts', getting my speed up quicker in town.

I had to deliver the missus' RG150 to Whenuapai Airbase for RRRS in the morning. Pootling along the motorway at 110kph waiting for a cop-shield. Sure enough a geezer in a newish Audi came flying past at about 140kph so sat about 5 seconds gap behind him along SH16 aware that I had enough of a gap to have the reactions to slow down if the driver in front spotted coppers or vice versa - got there in time without getting a ticket. P/T everyone knows I'm really a nana and never exceed 100kph!

i rode some beautiful roads around thames, practicing tight corners, sweepers, braking REAL hard in fast sweepers and managing to keep the bike leant over, breaking REAL hard in tight corners and 'tucking in' at break neck speeds.

suffered dehydration; beer, fags and concentrating for 10 hours without water is a no no and will result in fatigue, head aches and slight detours.

Hello Lissa, here is an extract from an earlier post could be helpful for you:

Find an empty carpark put down a line of markers [cones - I used tennis balls cut in half] use 6 or 8 of them space them out evenly. Start with them fairly close and practise slow bike control weaving, then spread them further apart and increase your speed gradually each 2nd or 3rd run through this slalom exercise. [You are not trying to get the pegs down here but rather you will get a good feel for counter steering as you increase your speed and have the markers at a comfortable distance apart.]

Now pick up all the markers and just have two placed at a reasonable distance apart so you can practise a figure eight - it is durng this practise when you are feeling comfortable with the counter steering that you may encounter the wee touch down of a peg without even trying to lean over too much. Getting the practice as outlined in the previous paragraph and then moving to figure eight brings together several elements of balance, counter-steering, and looking where you want to go. Remember in the figure eight you will be constantly looking back over one shoulder and then the other.

    Heads Up and Enjoy
