I liked Steve Jobs' comment in the keynote address that the killer app for the iPhone would be phone calls.
Cellphones, apart from the $100 bottom-end models like my Nokia 2125, have become impossible to use.
If the iPhone fixes that and still works very well as a PDA and browser, it will win bigtime.
I agree that GSM + WiFi is a good solution. It's cheap for the user, and let's face it - most of us spend most of our time bathed in the happy glow of an freely available 802.11 network, whether it be at home, work or a Starbucks in Shenzhen.
The fact that it runs full-blown OS X is also a big turnon.
If those USD prices were in NZD, I'd be very tempted to buy one.
