I like this bit:
Nothing will get done, and nobody prosecuted, as usual.Placing the boards posed a serious risk to public safety and was a serious offence under the Crimes Act, carrying a maximum penalty of five years' jail, he said.

Probably the same local "iwi"'s that take a "donation" out of your fishing/diving catch as you leave the beach.

Obviously the law wasnt serving the people who put these traps out and wont serve the people who want those who put them out to be caught. However I bet less dirt bikers head for the forest.
Dirt bikes do alot of damage and are used by dope growers who put in traps which endanger the owners of land. Who knows maybe these traps were set by growers, they used to set them where I was from(and rode my dirtbike)
I agree it's damm irresponsible to set a trap that could very seriously injure a person or animal, but the dirt bike riders are also being irresponsible and are the cause of the problem.
Some of you here have cried foul of whoever is setting the traps, but you probably aren't aware that this problem has been going on for YEARS in that area. Dirt bikes have been banned for years but despite locked gates, signs etc, there are still thick heads out there who don't give a toss and get in anyway, often crossing and damaging private property to enter, cutting locks on gates etc. Would you just sit back and take it if your property was damaged on a regular basis, and there was no easy way for it to be stopped?
Because of the few that have no respect for the rules, it has been spoilt for many, as our local motorcycle club can no longer get permission from Rayonier to run organised and patrolled events in these forests, which they had previously done for many years. That truly sucks as it's cut an awesome part of out of one of the annual rides.
FYI....
Rayonier NZ Ltd has the following policy on motorcycle riding in Waitarere Forest, Manakau Forest, Kohitere Forest, Lismore Forest.
* Public access on motorcycles and private vehicles is prohibited in the above forests without express permission of RNZ staff.
* Access on foot is welcome and legally allowed for under the Crown Forest Licence. Hunting is by permit only from RNZ staff.
Motorcycle and private vehicle access is prohibited for the following reasons:
* The potential for fires. If you start a forest fire through negligence you will be liable for the costs if caught, this can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
* Many hazards exist that could lead to an accident causing damage to property or serious harm to drivers of motorcycles & vehicles. Most individuals do not hold Public Liability Insurance that can cover the costs that may be associated with such occurrences.
* The safety of other forest users, both public on foot & forest workers can be put at risk by having uncontrolled riders/ drivers in the forest. The roads are often narrow with blind corners & low sight distance.
* Damage to property & theft. We have had to repair fences, gates, & buildings from vandalism from people in vehicles trying to enter/ exit the forests & buildings. People with vehicles or motorbikes are generally the ones who steal property from forest contractors work sites.
* Organised events are currently not permitted due to the problems we have had following allowed events. Previously riders have returned to the forests without permission & caused one or several of the problems mentioned above. Therefore the few people that are starting fires, damaging/ stealing our property or contractors, endangering other people, having accidents etc are spoiling it for the others.

Thanks mazz1972 to help put the artical in it's true perspective. The same issues/problems arise further up the north up the coast. I've had break-ins to buildings I was responsible for. Not nice at all. Thousands of dollars worth of equipment pilfered or damaged.
i just saw the boards on one news... pretty nasty stuff!
4" nails from a nailgun through boards.
not good!

thats just nasty..............................................
......my guess is iwi ..............
good points raised mazz...We stay at Hokio quite a bit and thankfully, so far, the only troubles seems to be those dickheads who raor down the beach from the Waiterere(?) side full noise. We ride bikes at Hokio and have no problems..mind you we have also spoken at length with the local iwi about it and understand the rules involved...no riding in the sand dunes, respect others on the beach.
Despite u4ea's insightful iwi claim, the local iwi have invested a hell of a lot of time and money into rejuevenating the grasses growing along the sand dunes to stop erosion (because no govt agency was interested) and so dont want to see it wrecked....makes a lot of sense to me.
Seems to me that if those who ride on the beach and forest areas were a little more respectful of the area, these sorts of issues wouldnt arise..but of course as previously mentioned there will always be some knobs who ruin it..thats why the police are regularly patrolling waiterere beach and forest..not to raise funds but to stop the idiots who ruin it for everyone else..Maybe we need to self police this..why not say something to a fellow rider who is acting like a goose..better that than having the police issue tickets, have the locals so pissed that they resort to measures like this or worse, have the govt pass a law banning motorcycles on beaches
Just my opinion for whats it worth
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead
Do not walk ahead as I may not follow.
Do not walk beside me as the path is narrow
In fact FU*K off and leave me alone
Hmm, tried this a while back with an illegal rider in Woodhill. I was helping to mark out for a trail ride and came across a rider who had decided that it was his 'right' to ride illegally on private property. When I explained that his actions were irresponsible and dangerous due to the possibility of head on's, I received a large amount of verbal abuse. I asked him to remove himself from the forest for safety's sake after which he then rode off the way he had come, no doubt to retun later.
I can undertand the Foxton locals frustration, but don't condone it.
