since when has the queen charlote drive on the way to picton been a 50k zone, kinda takes the gloss off a ride through there![]()

No way! Suck! There were speed reductions in some of the populated bays, but otherwise, it was a free for all.
Speed limit be-dammed on that road.
Of course, you have always had to be mindful of cyclists on that road.
But yeah, I don't remember it being an accident black spot, so the reduction is just another example of nanny-state ninnys spoiling our fun.
kinda blows alright, there is a brief 90k section down the straight by stillwater, but other wise , 50 fucken ks![]()
It was mostly 50kmh over a year ago. Probably makes some sense as I hat 2 close calls with campers straying over the center line in the tight sections last time I went through there.
Really took the fun out of what was one the sweetest motorcycling and scenic routes in the country.
It used to be de rigour to do it twice![]()
Blast From The Past Axis of Oil
well that sucks,I did that road last weekend in my van & still would have broken the speed limit, whats the world coming to,although I cant remember seeing that many coppers!!
"The road to Hell is really grippy with loads of run off & some wicked lefthanders"
It may be because some of us have had some... ahem... issues through there. Maybe the powers that be decided it would be safer... Certainly the way the seal melts in some places it may be so...
That said, last time I went through there, I still had a good ride, but thinking back, I may have 'not seen' the speed limit signs of 50 when coming out of the little settlements and assumed they were still 100, as one does on familiar territory...
Is a bugger though...
"You are only young once, but you can stay immature indefinitely."
i can see why it may be sensible, just sucks for me is all
Never really took notice of speed restrictions through there when I was living in Blenheim a few years back. Just the slow zones around the beach areas and around the housing. Give it stick! good luck to any copper that can safely catch you at speed in those turns. They mainly prowl the wairau straights and the Blenheim-Nelson Route, more income on those roads!!
Yeah fecken campers are a nightmare and the meatsacks inside are usually looking at the scenery not the road!!

the fuzz was out in force on the grove track on sunday
bloddy funstoppers, trying to stop us killing ourselves
its just silly
Well I was there in Jan 2006 and not so many signs, back there Dec 2006 & bloody signs everywhere, & whats up with the 90kph signs, that'd have to be a first![]()
Speed restriction signs confuse many motorists, particularly those (such as Meanderthals(TM)) who are incapable of higher thought, interpretation or interpolation.
The only speed restriction sign most motorists understand is 50kmh, and they will happily chug along at between 50-55kmh.
70kmh generally means 70kmh.
80kmh confuses them. They think it means 70kmh, less a bit, just to be sure. Same outcome for 90kmh.
100kmh or "open road" signs generally mean they (the Meanderthals(TM)) proceed at about 95kmh, on average. A bit slower through anything that may not be straight and 110kmh if they are on a stretch with a passing lane. The sighting or suspected sighting of a Police vehicle generally results in speed being reduced to less than 90kmh.
They never anticipate the road ahead, such as positioning themselves to overtake prior to a passing lane, and they will never accelerate to faster than 105kmh to go around a slower vehicle.
