    SHOCKing...advice please!

The cage was dropped in for its WOF today. Had a bad feeling about it because the "check engine" light has been coming on and going out alot recently...By all accounts the "check engine" light is faulty, WTF.

Anyway I digress, it failed the WOF, seemingly the shocks are rooted. Balls.

There are aftermarket jobbies on it atm (no clue as to what kind, they came with the car) and the garage said it would cost $400 for the front and $600 for the rear ( I assume thats for a set, front and back), to replace them with similiar items.

Can anyone in the know tell me how much new shocks for a WRX should cost!

I realise, like everything, there will be different choices here from "bog standard" to "cor blimey". So any indication as what decent shocks should cost would be great

    Thanks

ah well.....just to give you an idea....my flat mates jeep cherokee was goin to cost 600 for the rear shocks to be replaced....i priced up some munro gas shocks for it at $180 for the pair and it took me about 2 hours to fit them.... so if you think your willing and able id say do it yourself it will save you alot of money....other wise try sending classic zed a pm...he owns a workshop in whangaporoa he'll look after you

I presume they are quoting you for the entire struts including fitting. Bloody ridiculous pricing. You should be able to get the entire set of shocks done for a shit load less. Shop around mate

That would depend entirely on what type and brand they are pricing on, it wasn't uncommon for us to fit sets that were $1400 + if they are quoting on OE Subaru I'd expect prices like that

Something like munros I wouldn't expect to pay more than around $500-600 a full set fitted, with a WRX I wouldn't expect it to take much longer than an hour to do as like most jap cars they're pretty simple to work on but you'd need an alignment afterwards as well

If they are aftermarket They may be rebuidalbe so you could try George Stocks or Autolign who both offer a rebuild service although that option means you're without a car for a few days

We had a problem a couple of years back with the check engine light coming on and it turned out to be something easy......i think it was the brake fluid that needed to be filled up again.

$400 per end is a normal price, the rear are priced higher so I presume they cost more.If you want cheap you could try 2nd hand, but that's a bit pointless.I use KYB mostly, they are OE and priced well.

The Check Engine light means the computer has picked up a problem with a sensor, best you find out what's wrong, before you do find out what's wrong.....dark night,rain...y'know.....

Well, when they hooked up the dianostic computer thing, it told them that the 'light senor' had failed!

Thanks folks, had a chat with Lou about this last night as well...

Will touch base as to end result when I have talked to the garage, but at this stage its looking like a trip to a shock shop and/or an independent opinion for starters.

That's a new one on me.....if the light sensor failed surely it would fail to light?

Shocks will fail on lack of damping, oil leaks or noise, there will be a reluctance to fit only one side as the otherside may then be weak....and this will come back on them.Still,it's only your safety afterall - I don't care if you die,but I will be pissed off if you take out one of my family....

no sorry, not making myself clear....the sensor that triggers the light was not working properly, hence it kept firing on and off for no reason, the light is fine...at least thats what the garage said

Have I somehow given you the impression that I have no intention of replacing the shocks?

When in fact the opposite is true, and in all likelihood I'll replace all four shocks tommorrow, I simply want to be armed with some prior knolwedge before talking about something I know very little about...no harm in that is there!

Couple of quotes for anyone interested:

    Pitstop

$1033 for 4 monroe shocks fitted inc. GST and labour and wheel alignment

    Shock shop

$350/ shock (I didn't get any further with this for obvious reasons)

    Wingers

1000 for 4 shocks (fitting/labour/GST/wheel alignment ALL extra)

interesting eh! Not cheap, but not as bad as a bike though!

You somehow gave me the impression you were contesting their decision that the shocks were faulty.

The thing that triggers the light is the computer, part of it's self diagnosis. There is no sensor to activate the lamp.

Stay away from the franchise dealers, their prime motive is to make lots of money.Go to a local garage - they will buy the shocks from Stocks and charge you retail, and charge labour as time on the job.
