Awesome ride, really enjoyed that! (Although not the head winds ) Did manage to scrape my pegs tonight, both sides, so they are now matching! :woohoo:

The only thing I will comment on is the bleedin' animals that jumped out in front of me, 3 birds, a possum, a hedgehog and a cat! Can't they wait till I've passed then jump out!??

Hurrie should be ok. Did you end up going to the dr's for a checkup Hurrie??
You need to stop writing cbr's off man...(that's if she is indeed a write off)

But I bet your keen for a mc22 next time.

I was fairly distraught when I heard Harvrd had some off, then I was relieved when I saw him riding in the opposite direction, then I went back to dispair when I saw Hurrie had an off.

he'll be sore today but ok.

(remember what I said? 2 panadol then 3 hours later, 2 neurofen, and rotate that)

Dark times mate, tidy wee bike she was.

Good to hear that your not hurt too bad.

Someone might be able to tell you on KB about de-registering the bike before the insurance company does it and pockets the coin.

Hope you find out soon what's gonna happen. Good weather we're having at the moment.

At first I was like that doesnt look to bad.

Then I got to the second photo and I was like, hmm broken foot peg and a bit missing from the fairing, still not a write off.

I saw the 3rd photo and was like "Whooh" and had to pick my jaw up off the floor.

hahahaha when they picked it up for me i was sitting on the side of the road, and i could only see the right side of the bike, i was like "aw thats not too bad" than the guy on the R1 (sorry never got your name) comes over to my side and goes "haha he's looking at the good side" and than i got up and my jaw did this aswell :gob:

I was on the r1 right behind ya! Looked like you were going a bit hot into the corner and then realised it tightened a bit more and pulled the bike up straight to stop then target fixation kicked in or something? Good to see your alright though.

It may just be the subframe that's bent. A friend of mine had similar damage on a cbr250rr and it was just the subframe and an exhaust.

That hill is good at breaking motorbikes.

gibbo how do i do the derego thing??

not 100% bro, but I would ring up the ltsa ot ltnz (maybe even the post office??)or wherever the rego goes these days and say you want to de-register your bike. I would assume that you will then be sent a cheque in the mail for the money you never got to use.

I just have a feeling that if you just ring your insurance company and they write off your bike, that they cancel/de-reg your bike and pocket that cash from that.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

but if i cancel the rego now, would the insurance company have a fit about how my bike doesnt have a rego and it shouldnt have been on the road? or will they accept that i cancelled it after the crash?

i guess these are the things that you need to find out. it would just be good if you can save yourself some coin as your excess is pretty huge.

Possibly ring a bike shop and see what they say?

If I were to GUESS, it would be that if you canceled it then it would be dated when you chose to cancel it. i.e. on the letter you recieved with the cheque or something.

but if i cancel the rego now, would the insurance company have a fit about how my bike doesnt have a rego and it shouldnt have been on the road? or will they accept that i cancelled it after the crash? The bike belongs to you until such time that the insurance company actually pays you out, effectively buying the bike off you. Make your insurance claim and wait to see if they decide to fix it or write it off. If it's just sub frame damage they may fix it, but if it's new fairings, paint, stickers etc they'll probably write it off. Keep onto them to get the answer as soon as you can rather than just waiting for a cheque to turn up. As soon as they tell you they intend to write it off, then get it de-registered quick smart and get your money back. If you're sure it'll be written off then go and de-register it now. Your paper work from this will be dated thus covering your arse.

Having more of a think about this, I would be really surprised if your insurance company cared if it was registered or not. Having rego does not affect them, as long as your bike had a wof at the time then that is the important thing.

You know how everyone with weekend bikes etc are like 'fuck rego - i'll just put my bike on 'hold full time'? They aren't stupid and driving round without insurance. They check to see if they are still insured if they aren't rego'd but have a wof. Have a wee squizz at your insurance policy. I'd be suprised if your were un insured due to a rego issue.

Looks like just the subframe is 'tweaked'. Swingarm looks in line with the main frame (from what I can tell looking at pic 3). Will your insurer allow you to nominate a repairer?

:done: I did the Port Levy to Little River run about 12 months ago on the trusty Hornet. OK it was mainly 2nd gear and 20-30 kph with legs in training wheel position but still doable. Probably better to do in a group in case of punctures or whatever. Also, chain gets dusted up of course... Don't think the Port Levy to Pidgeon Bay would be much different...

I was up there on both those roads and some others doing a big loop after sunset last night, got home after 11pm.
Akaroa looked good all lit up looking across at it from Bossu.
All the shingle roads in the area are ok, well swept in average condition at the moment.
The road Port Levy to Pidgeon Bay sometimes has more coarse chip on it but seemed ok last night.
Had my CBR1000f on them back when I had it and the VF1000f before the CBR.
VF was a bit more fun maybe because it had less Fairing and narrower tyres.

With the great turnout we've been getting at WNR, considering different bike types, ages and differing rider preferences and abilities, you are never going to please all of the people all of the time. There's no rule that says everyone has to follow the same route so I reckon we should just attempt to meet at a certain place (pub) at a preferred time. :apint:

No offence Gloplg but I don't think that is a valid criterion for deciding on a route that everyone (nearly 40 bikes) ought to follow. I mean, I wouldn't use my bike to jump the Grand Canyon but don't think I ought to tell Evil Knievil that he shouldn't try...

If your all going to wind up at the same place anyway, why cant the off road riders take a different route to people that dont have off road bikes?

I took a longer and diferent route last Wednesday from the bulk of the group and had a lovely ride. I probably got there 15 min after the big group, it was no big deal and it was nice to set my own pace for a while.

If you do the Purau-Taitap run I am thinking about doing the slow way over the westarn valley road on the old bike. I am going to be very slow as my old bike boils its carbs on long slow uphill runs and has 30's technology brakes to deal with the bottom of the little river side.

WNR destination this week, TaiTap pub.

WNR destination next week, Greta Valley Bar and Cafe.

This weeks route, BK, Dyers Pass, round the bays to Diamond Harbour, those riders who want a shorter ride may turn around there, those who want a longer ride may continue to Purau or further to Port Levy.

There has been a suggestion of some of our group, the offroaders, going further on the gravel roads around Port Levy. I think if you want to, then go for it. I do not have a problem with this!!!!

I might be keen for that, tried out the softer suspension on the DR tonight and loved it (bet my neighbours didn't!) If I took the DR I'd be slower than slow, it struggles to go 100 and vibrates like mad so my top speed will be about 80.

with all due respect gloplug that sounds like the ride you tried running only 2 weeks ago sans summit road, why are we riding to the same place so close together when I believe greta was run 4 weeks ago?

In the past we've drawn up the common favourite rides and rotated them, I'm going to draw up some new ones (given the earthquake) and I'll post them, then people can add rides and comment on them and things.

Length: 109km (161km return to Christchurch)

Description:
Since the earthquake damaged the Duvauchelle Pub the ride in 2010 was extended all the way to akaroa with a return to the little river hotel which has some great value food.
The Akaora highway took some damage due to the earthquake with extra potholes and bumps on the whole road, be cautious of gravel on the Akaroa side of hilltop.

Stops: Usually in Halswell and Little River and Akaroa, although should be kept brief due to length of the ride.

Variations:
Dyers pass (-1 km)
Only going to Little River (-56.9 km)
Lyttelton Tunnel (+7km) Removed until roadworks completed
Evans Pass (+21km) Removed until roadworks completed
DIRT BIKE RIDE GOES HERE! (I dunno the length difference)

Length: 98.9km (180km return to Christchurch)

Description:
Although it starts and ends with some dull North Canterbury straights the gooey centre of this ride starts deliciously smooth around Weka Pass and tightens up after Waikari, be cautious at the end of Weka Pass, there's a tank slapper pothole at the top of the hill going into Waikari, after Waikari there's a left hand corner with a gravel drive way on the left hand side that often spills a wee bit of gravel onto the road, and later there's a sweeping right hander that often has grit.

Stops: Marshlands Road across from the ice cream place, meeting point at amberly for the northern riders is only a quick stop, then there's a stop at the turn off to weka pass and finally a stop at the Greta Valley Pub.

Variations:
Teviotdale (+32.1km) - It's by the ocean....breif stop
Suggestions? I know there's an alternative that goes from rangiora to amberly...

Length: 57.2 km (75.1km return to Christchurch)

Description:
Like the Duvauchelle Pub, Godly House was closed by the earthquake, so until it's restored or replaced we'll pay our respects then turn around and head to Taitapu Hotel which has been an excellent replacement with delicious food and an awesome beer garden, Caution on the road to Diamond Harbour, patch work to the road is patchy....and bumpy, and entering Charteris Bay there's a gnarly drop in the road, hold on cause your bike will probably ride it out but it'll make your tummy flip (personally I love it)

Stops:
There's a gravel pit place after the teddington straights, you cant miss it. There's another stop in Diamond Harbour and the final stop at the Taitapu Hotel.

Variations:
Port Levy (+34km)
Lyttelton Tunnel (+7km) Removed until roadworks completed
Evans Pass (+21km) Removed until roadworks completed

If you get it spectactularly wrong at turn one you can make it to the prison.
No beer but plenty of sex and drugs so they say..

Not into dropping soap being part of foreplay :D

Was some loose shingle 1/2 way up the diamond harbour side of the hill to port levy couple of months ago - may have now been sweep clean. For those that have never ridden back from port levy back to diamond harbour - its worth doing - neat corners !

IMOO - The only road bike I'd be taken from Port Levy to Little River is - one I didn't care about. Single track in most parts, tight corners, braking ruts on corners, and Very steep coming down into little river.

It will certainly rattle ya fairings if you have them.
There is plenty of corrugation (not ruts) on the Little river side, most people prefer to ride up that and down in to Port Levy.
Corrugation is at normal levels, seen it a lot worse.

I'll continue to watch the thread and probably come along work permitting (should be able to arrange it).

Was awesome! Got soaked on the way down but tent was already pitched (thanks EccelesNZ for that) so got there, dumped my gear, got changed, got myself a couple of drinks then headed away for dinner in a nice toasty warm house. I went for a ride yesterday around banks (dyers, gebbies, diamond harbour, port levy, little river, pigeon bay and back) and the sealed roads were mostly free of grit except outside of some corners and the usual bits of rock that fall off the sides of the road. It seems like the sweepers have been through and cleared away the majority of grit.

So we're not meeting at the BK car park at 6?

Yes the main group is still leaving from BK at 6.30pm

We used to have 5 really great routes we used to do, and well the two that were my fav were buggered by the quake. Even so I never did enjoy Oxford and I hardly ever did that one. Also the roads are in terrible condition at the moment.

On the last few rides I have been ridden to the same destination as the wnr but going my own longer or more difficult way to get there.

I still enjoy the rides, not going to give up on them. The WNR nicely breaks my week into two halves, the first half looking forward to the ride and the second looking forward to the weekend. Crowe has been coming lately which has been great for both of us.

I think it's just not as structured as it was. There were quite a few of us last night that had no idea where we were going to how we were getting there, and even who was going where because of all the options being bantered around.
like I replied to HOT, I liked the structure of it, keeping the group together more, definite leader, TEC, meet up points etc.

Have been a bit fractured lately, still a great bunch of people to socialise with,
you'll always get the odd few who have bit more time on a wed and want to do a bigger ride and catch up/ join in later. Like this week with the taitap being a end point.
Perhaps we should float a end point first?, early in the week, as wnr too alot of people is a social thing , and food/meals service and actual place is a biggie. Some of the end points are a turn off , but the ride would have been ok......

That would give several options on ride route , with the majority who turn on the nite have fine tuning input.

the WNR is just not the same if we all split off into mini rides, even if we end up in the same location. but, I can understand that the big group ride with a few "stop and gather" points along the way gets a bit much sometimes, when all we wanna do is ride like the wind! (or in my case, ride like a gentle breeze)

our mini ride on wed was good but i enjoyed it better after we joined up with some others after getting to Godley House, even tho i swapped bikes with Karl and watched him disappear into the distance on my Ninja :bye:

Feeling exactly the same way chick!! Seems a lot of familiar faces are backing out and just not turning up. What's happening............ Has it gotten too big? Too many personalities perhaps, who knows but a healthy, open and useful discussion on it wouldn't go astray.... Cause I used to love it too!!

Easy - after getting almost in a prang with some "enthusiastic" passing on blind corners with no warning at the bottom of Evans, I just can't be bothered, sadly... Loved riding with some of you guys, but others I'd definitely not want to be riding with (and they would probably feel the same, no doubt). I always thought the ride was supposed to be cruisy, but there seemed to be a bunch who reserve the right to show their "attributes" (fast bike? slick moves? superior skill? experience? "balls"?) at any opportunity, safe/legal or not (and I know legal can be an idiot, but would think safe vs 1 or 2 seconds advantage is a pretty lame excuse).

(Yes, I know I ride like an old fart, but it has kept me alive for 25years of farting now. If I want to fang it - and I can, but I sort of outgrew that after the first few natural brown-trou incidents - at least I do it away from others, not putting them at risk too. Whatever.)

Anyway, if anyone wants to get in touch that's great, but I'm avoiding the pack mentality situations for now; did just get thru Nelson for the first time on the bike, which was nice... Takaka Hill next sometime.

you must've traveled a different road to that which I did earlier this evening.

bays still has marked (and some unmarked) potholes of grit right on the lines one would ride, I was lucky to expect them knowing our useless city council and it's blaise approach to health and safety.

evans is alright except that 30kph area.

Ok I'll do a few stops on the way up cause this can get hairy.

First stop will be on Marshlands road across the road from the ice cream place, it's on the last straight before we turn off, please make sure you get far enough back from the road.

next stop will be breif in amberly to pick up the northern riders

NORTHERN RIDERS MEET US AT AMBERY AT LIKE 645

then there'll be a stop outside the pub at the turn off the waikeri.

then the last stop is the pub.

i might go scout the road tomorrow and scrub in some new tyres....maybe

I reckon it might have been from me pushing the wee Zeal pretty hard on the way to the pub (just cantered back to Chch on the way home) and that made the difference, oh and maybe 8k was already on the tripometer (I think that's the word I'm after).

Cheers flip and mrs flip for pulling over to see if I was ok etc. good people you two :niceone:
Lol!oops!

I was fine, didnt go onto reserve and got home without gasing up again:yes:

Yeah think you said you had done a few more ks than me in the carpark at the pub

Is it just me or is the ride home just about always more enjoyable? No stops, full belly and just had a booze/sugar/caffeine fix. Oh, less commuters as well.

it's easy to replace, even I could manage it. Your brake light might still work fine anyway, it might just be the tail light.

Hey kids, hope you had a fun ride tonight!
I went home instead, too many little things pissed me off during the day and I have discovered that riding whilst in a bad mood is not a good idea!

I think I said to someone last week that I never seem to catch the cool shit on video. Well that proved itself again today, as I was leaving home the Armed Offenders Squad and the Army were playing war games next door!
I shit you not, dudes (and dudettes) running round in full combat gear, guns, shields, dogs and even a bloody rocket launcher!

And I didn't have the camera running

Funnily enough, I do! (well, it used to be anyhoo) but the war games were on the other side of me in some old navy land where they used to keep lots of bunkers full of ammo ... Ahh those were the days, sneaking in and looking at all the bright, shiny metal pointy things in neat little rows in boxes, something that looked like a metal pineapple and some great big pointy things that would even have trouble fitting into Paris Hilton!

Sigh, kids these days miss out on so much!

Hey everyone thanks for an awsome ride last might. Gee dave that R6 sounded sweet as we went thru Frog Rock. Nice lines by the way.
Tires on a budget? Try the Shinko APEX. Im using them and they really are good and $450 a pair is reasonably affordable.
Ahh yes we did come back thru scargill but the pace was moderate due to fading light... still fun tho.

It was really good to see everyone riding within themselves and enjoying a pace that was fun for the group.
Ummm yes as for fuel enonomy well lets just say that as the throttle get opened the gas bill goes up lol.
See ya all next week but since a common theme of discussion as been less stops how about we try to come up with a easy follow route with minimum stops? Everyone likes Devochales eh... how about i contact the cafe owner and see if they would open for drinks and nibbles for us next wed? Or maybe go the extra 6 mins to Akaroa. With less stops it wont take any longer. Sure parts o the group will spread out but its a ride not a procession. If you find yourself with noone to ride with slow down for a bit and someone will catch ya up.

The duvachelles ride could be a pretty good idea, especially because at the moment we shoot back to Little River after Akaroa for the drinks etc. Just need to see what the masses think.

Yeah I was trying to move that Zeal on the straights, that didn't help at all :innocent:

I would prefer to get dinner at Akaroa. I actually don't care for the Little river pub. I don't mind riding back at night, I hate gravel, but don't mind the rain or the dark, but only one.

The Duvauchelles pub was boarded up and the damage to the top floor was looking pretty catastrophic. Pity because it was a great place to go, even for Harley's.

Not quite across the road, about 500m along the road on the other side. Obviously you either never made it past the temptation of the pub, or you were too busy lining up the next corner to notice....

So will ride there and back to the Duvauchelle Store & Café for something to eat.
