wide angle also makes corners look a bit better cause you can see where the bike is going, as opposed to a tighter lens which would sort of pan when it came to a corner.

Thanks for your help today Dave, it was much appreciated. Unfortunately it turns out I have two punctures (there was a second tiny hole about 50mm along from the first) so not confident in putting two plugs so close together. I will be chasing you up first thing Wed to see if you can get those Road Attacks in and fitted for me for a good price.

Hope you had a good ride up north.

21 deg and some drizzle at the moment, sounds like great weather for a ride. I for one can't ride in todays heat, it just kills me, you know what I don't ride in and haven't for years.

To tell the truth, I don't mind doing a different run, Greta is nice but it's about as far away from where I live as possible. All that highway for a short, lovely stretch ...

But, I just like riding with you nutters so anywheres good :)

Mully & myself rode to Akaroa on Monday (the really hot day). Instead of coming back the same way, we turned right at the top of the first hill out of Akaroa and returned via what I think is called the Summit Road. Plenty of twisties on a road in good condition, sod all traffic, fantastic views down into the harbour on one side (see pic) and out into Pegasus Bay on the other. I doubt there would be more than 10 minutes difference over the standard route & think that on the next Aka trip we should take this road either on the way and/or the return...:2thumbsup

It is a fun bit of road, the only thing I found was that the view can be very distracting from the twisties, especially if you ride it at about sunset like I did a while back.

Definately a good alternative route back from Akaroa

I was wrong about your bike CJ. It isn't a beast......... it's a beast and a half!!!!:yes::yes:

I like your idea about a different way to or from Akaroa as well. I have only travelled that part of the summit road during the middle of the day. I wonder how sunstrike would effect us late in the day?? It could make for particularly interesting riding.:facepalm:

Farking typical, two spots of rain and you all give in and go home.

There were some really legless dollies at the pub looking for a good time tonight and you were not there.

I didn't get wet at all this evening and it was quite warm in north canterbury.

Trying to think about places we don't often go, or never. It's easy to find a different pub but the route to get there ...
Hmm ...

We've stopped at the Speights in Ferrymead a few times, that was nice. Maybe a Dyers, Bays, Evans, along summit then down St. Andrews hill, Ferrymead? Nothing too strenuous ...

Or we could take our togs if it's a nice day and end up in a nice bay for a swim, just around from Diamond Harbour is nice ...

Or end up at the Night n Day in sumner for icecream ...

Or ...

Or ...

We could go around the bays to port levy then through that road that takes you near little river and either go to like the duvauchelles/akaroa area or somewhere like little akaloa on the summit road over on the peninsula etc.

CeeJay and myself were talking about something similar to that the other day. But going from Port Levy to Pigeon Bay then up to the summit, then either Akaroa or Little River. Would definitely be a starter for something like that sometime.

This subject was broached a few weeks ago but somehow got swallowed up in the bickering (RIP). The salient point is that both Western Valley Rd and the Port Levy to Pidgeon Bay road are UNSEALED. Now, I (and I know some others) are of the view that riding road bikes on unsealed roads is or should be a basic motorcycling skill. As such we appeal to everyones sense of adventure to give it a go. In the right company and by following a few common sense rules, you will be:

SAFE
UPSKILLING
REWARDED BY NOT RETURNING VIA THE SAME ROUTE

The worst that will happen is that your chain and wheel rims will get dusty and need to be hosed down (& lubed) when you get home. However, you will be smiling because of the satisfaction in knowing that you now have a new skill that will open up other possible rides. :woohoo:

By virtue? of having a tail tidy, there would be handfuls of gravel peppering my taillight and rear cowl if I were to go off roading  It is bad enough now with all the loose chip flying about at the moment. Ergo, can we also please have an alternative sealed route to the destination for the wussies :violin::yes: Unless Hampton's will let me borrow the Honda Monkey SE ....

Ah - we need to clear up a common confusion here. You will not be going fast enough to kick up gravel either onto your own bike or anyone elses. I am not talking about "off-roading" in the sense that you are interpreting it. The road in question (Port Levy to Pidgeon Bay) is only ~14km. At a maximum speed of 20 kph, it takes 14/20 hrs or ~40 minutes. I did it on the Hornet 3 weeks ago, no problem at all. The unsealed section is more like steering your bike at slow speed down a 14km driveway. As long as you don't touch your front brake at all, there is very little risk, especially as there will be others around to help and guide you...:scooter:

You are right Suspekt - but you just let everyone know what an old bugger you are :) while I'm still a young bugger and couldn't possibly be old enough to know how fast you old buggers used to ride the shingle :innocent:. pfft who needs teaching?

I'll back the r6 into any shingle corner at 170kph while racing a hyper-sonic jet and snorting coke of the titties off a hooker...blind folded....with my arms tied behind my back....and ice skates on my feet....oh and my theme music will be playing...

Well I know you young whippersnappers are just joking (I hope) but from a group perspective, we need to get everyone over the 14km as quickly and as safely as possible. The road has quite severe corrugations in places that if ridden over at any speed will cause your bike to go into resonance. Thats why the old BSAs, Trumpies etc used to literally shake themselves to bits. Since we will be quite a long way from help (medical or other), taking unnecessary risks is just plain dumb. We don't really want TV news filming one of us being choppered off to hospital, do we? :shit:

So, looks like you, gloplug & me are going to be doing duty as tutors to get these (other) young buggers schooled up eh?

I totally agree with you about learning to ride on gravel roads.

However my experience of gravel roads is rather historical/hysterical. I think there are better people than me, in our group, to share their experience on gravel roads.

Transalper and/or HOT Lady have vastly more current knowledge and experience of gravel than I and I would like to ask them to assist please.

Thank you for your vote of confidence SB and CJ and may I join your "Gravel 101"????:scooter::ride::ride:

That's why I film at 60fps!

So for tomorrow, shall we say 1pm at BK? Enough time for a leisurely ride and be home in time for tea. Gives me a chance to get some sleep too!

What say the masses?

Sounds good. Are we going for a swim?

Could be good tho it sounds like people want to do some gravel so maybe they won't be stopping at the beach? Maybe bring togs just incase? I might do the same if the weather is warmer :)

Yep, sounds good. There is a remote chance that, after all this, I may not be able to make it. Have been offered some work in the early evening and things are pretty dire so have taken it. All depends on time and sleep. Will let you know if I'm not coming.

Actually Gibbo, have sent you a txt. Can you let me know where people want to go tomorrow (once you've all arrived) and which pass you'll be going over (Evans/Dyers/Gebbies) and I'll meet you there at the bottom i.e. Lyttelton, Governors Bay or Weatcheaf Tavern. Saves me going all the way into town and back again. :D
May well be on the dirt bike.

Righto,

For the sake of making a plan how 'bout you lot meet CJ there at 1.30 and I'll wait for you at the other side of the hill in Governors Bay.

The Cashmere club is at 50 Colombo Street right near the base of the hill.

Then on 'round the bays? Think I might take the DR if the mood takes me so will be slow but should be fun on the shingle if we go that far.

In the small chance that I won't be able to come I'll post here and txt you before hand Gibbo, I've got your number so long as it's correct here in your KB details.

However I really wanna ride so it'll take a lot to hold me back!

I was not trying to suggest that the speed on shingle needs to be at the legal limit. contary to what the law makers try to make us believe 100kph may be the limit, but not always the safest. But 20kph on shingle is too slow for safe riding over a longer distance than a driveway. You need to get to a speed tha allows the bike to float under you using the gyroscopic effect of the wheels to keep you upright, use the rear brake only and constantly scan the road for the right lines. Ride in the wheel tracks not the loose stuff. Stand on the pegs on the corrogations. you should all be able to do that anyway. and corners? turn them, dont fear them. oh, trebble the distance between bikes is a good idea.
Cow shit on sealed roads is more dangerous than shingle, god knows there is plenty of that around the port hills
But as an after thought, mmm, maybee not. We ae talking KB'ers afterall

:shit:

At least it will be 14km that you will be safe from getting a speeding ticket! :woohoo:

Good enough. There is some cycling event going on this weekend so I'll scoot out soon to make sure we won't get held up. Watch this space...

There's been enough banter about the gravel now - let's just do it and time how long it takes each person to get over the 14 kms without damaging themselves or their bikes.

Ok, I been away in the other Island for a while and only really started catching up on this thread this morning.

Checking my GPS track logs it takes my partner J on her DR650 (which she finds a bit big n heavy for her on gravel) about 36 minutes to do the 14km gravel bit from Little river back to Port Levy.

Also the bit about not touching the front brake is both good advice and bad.

The front brake will still give you the better stopping performance on gravel but you have to be more subtle, more carefully progressive with its application.... BUT however you sportbikers or anyone with touchy brakes may find you are indeed better off eliminating the risk of lock up all together by leaving it alone completely unless crashing in to something is imminent in which case use it and even lock it to dump the bike thus saving yourself maybe ?
The DR on the other hand has very tame front brakes enabling me to easily progressively apply it and feel the lock starting so as to get it stopping well yet avoid the full on lock, though if well balanced and upright the front wheel can be skidded with out issue for a bit anyway (not recommended you try it on a painted bike first time).

I'll see if I can get along but no guarantees at this stage as still in recovery mode from the NI trip :violin:

See you all there.

Other stuff springs to mind....

Corrugation is hard to accelerate on so I usually don't try too hard, just cruise over it and accelerate when it smooths out and just to be annoying it is more common on uphill exits from corners. On the straighter bits if you encounter it and can get you speed up then bikes tend to float over the top making it feel smoother but make sure you give yourself enough time or space to slow down for the next bend especially if you are choosing not to use the front brake, it'll take ages to stop so experiment a bit to find out how things are reacting.

Let the bike move about, if you fight it or put your weight on the handle bars you will make it worse (same as on the race track).

On corners lean the bike in and the body out is what I was taught, like in a slow speed carpark type manoeuvring style (just remembering back to the roadsafe course a few years back, same technique).
Some corners will just about be a slow to almost stopped, turn the bike and go again experience. I still get that on the DR in some cases also.

A heap of info results on 'how to ride motorcycle on gravel roads (http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=road+bikes+on+shingle&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&expIds=17259,18168,20782,23756,24878,27400,28155&xhr=t&q=how+to+ride+motorcycle+on+gravel+roads&cp=12&pf=p&sclient=psy&client=firefox-a&hs=rag&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=how+to+ride+motorcycle+on+gravel+roads&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=28f6b3b14a1a140e)', some good info, some bad. it's all just opinions you know.

Great stuff TA - hope you can make it - come on, you know you want to...

I've just been over Dyers and the story with the cyclists is that they are riding up Hackthorne rd (eeeekk!!!) to where it meets Dyers and down Dyers to Cashmere. The worst that will happen is that the downhill bit will be closed for a few minutes each time the group does a circuit. They've got marshalls all over the place so it won't be a problem.

Lyttelton Harbour is like a milkpond and there's barely a zephyr of wind so it should be a fantastic afternnoons ride... bring your cameras. Water bottle might be an idea as well...

Sadly, theres no pub or cafe at Pidgeon Bay. However, the road back up to the Summit rd is great and then its a right turn and more twisties to Hilltop, where we join the main road and down the hill to Lil' River & home...

If anyone is having butterflies about the gravel bit - you needn't worry. However, no one is going to force you to do it and you'll have to ride home the same way you came...

As we headed up Dyers Pass on Sunday there was a cycle race on (http://www.elitenationals.co.nz/). They didn't have the roads fully closed off and were somehow allowing cyclists to battle down Hackthorne Rd at 80kph dodging between the cars which were potentially driving down there as well.

How much effort would it take to get some partially closed roads and do some real bike racing in the area? It would somehow be perceived as unsafe, it couldn't be any worse than what was happening on that hill though.

I've just ridden back from Oxford - its raining out there and in towards the port hills but dry in between. When conditions are doubtful as they are today :cold:, why don't we just automatically postpone WNR to TH(ursday)NR and so on?

Mully Clown

Little bit wet (spitting), little bit windy and a little bit cold in Addington. I would if someone else was keen. If not it might be a good idea to get out of work before it hits.

A few weeks ago I agonised over what bike to buy and the decision kept changing as more information about different bikes came to light. Based on the experience of buying & selling in the current market, I would suggest that you could do a lot better with your 4.5k if that is your budget. It's most definitely a buyer's market so if I were you, I'd be looking at bikes priced at around the 6k - 7k mark and offer them 4.5k cash. Some will no doubt think you are wasting their time but there will be others who are really motivated to sell. Stick to your guns, be patient and there are bargains to be had... :wait:

Not for 4.5k bro

I had a quick look at sports bikes in chch for similar price and there is not a lot on TM currently, (unless you count 250's).

Do you have a budget? And what size bikes are you looking at?

What CJ and FJ said are valid points, it's definitely a buyers market.

That's the one. Those that wanted could do the tunnel and Little River if they wanted. We'd probably stop at Little River on the way back anyway.

If someone wanted they could do Dyers, Summit, Bays, Gebbies, Hilltop, Summit, SH75, Little River.

Just a suggestion but why don't we meet at Governors Bay pub (upper) carpark at say 6:00. Then it doesn't matter how we get there. :)

It's probably a good idea but not everyone will check this thread before the ride and will just automatically go to BK

Don't think we'll make it there by then, also then we'll miss going through the tunnel with the perrdy bike sounds!
Why not keep it at the tried and true BK @ 6-6.30?

I did a strong one in Wellington a few years ago, it felt like a flat tire. I pulled over on the motorway couldn't find a problem the saw on the news that there had been a shake. The bike just went all wobbley.

Thought I had fixed my puncture ("nail" looked like part of a bicycle spoke). Got away about 7:30 at a fair clip. The repair lasted until about 2 kms after Millers road exit, then things went wobbly. Hauled up, tyre was soft and hot. Some bikes stopped after a bit and turns out they had joined up with WNR at the Wheatsheaf. Think sammcj was one of them. If so thanks mate and pass on my thanks to the other two. I owe you some CO2 bottles. Anyway, another repair and slow trip back to Halswell for air and home....:niceone:

After 5 or 6 months with next to no riding - bloody hell I was rusty, didn't get into the bends nearly enough, oh well, I'm sure it'll come right with a bit of daily riding.

Twas' bloody windy and some of those roads we're pretty munted.
I turned back just before Akaroa hoping to miss those dark clouds... which never actually amounted to anything

Nice to meet you, I was the fella with the ratty BMW you parked next to in the car park.

Nice to see you again Sam! I'd go mad if I took time off riding.

Having said that, I am amazed I lasted 15 years with no riding, bloody hell it's nice being back on a bike good and proper ...
