Hello there lovely man!

Absolutely gutted this afternoon. The cast came off and the ankle was re-xrayed. It shows no sign of healing at all :shit: Not even a tiny little bit

I am back in plaster again, with a referral to an orthopedic surgeon :pinch:

Looks likely I will have to take the car north, IF I am allowed to drive by then :weep:

Oh dear :shit: Im not liking the sound of that - nonunions are a bitch :(

Which leg is it? If it's the left you should be fine in an automatic.

You and me both mate. I was incredulous when I saw the xray, it looks worse if that is possible :pinch: Mind you my case now gets automatically referred to a branch case manager  It cost me $66 at the doctors today, $10 for the taxi to get down to the docs, and would have been $40 for the xray but I was not charged as the machine was broken and I had a HUGE wait. I told the chick looking after me I was going to go broke at this rate :violin:

Sadly it is my right ankle

I can not begin to explain how disappointed I am.

So you should be all good to ride then :) You'll have a lovely big cast protecting most of that leg, and as long as you go slow enough in the corners or have to stop while going up steep hills, you wont use the rear brake!

Lets just say they "contribute" to the costs. $10 for the taxi to get to the doctors( I should get that reimburst) $66 at the doctors, and would have been $40 at xray. I will go broke at this rate

Well, for those that may be interested, I had the chance to go for a spin yesterday and scrub in a new rear tyre, hmmm why not the cape.....
There are a few road works as you come into and out of Te Kao, and as you leave Waitiki Landing, the petrol station at Waitiki Landing has most definately burnt down (I was hoping it was a sick joke by some one demented, but sadly not).
I had the missus and the kids following in her car (with a 5L jerry can) so thought it was a good idea to test the bikes fuel range.
Brimmed tank in Awanui, ride to the cape, ride down to Tauputaputa beach, then down to Te Paki stream, back to Awanui.
Total distance is about 218 km's
....my bike will go 216 km's on a tank, as I found out.
Sitting on an indicated 120 - 140 (those who know the Italian bikes know this can be anything from 80 - 120 kph realworld).
So I reacon I can do this trip on one tank, I just won't be sightseeing.
Those of you that haven't done this trip before, relax and take your time. I found myself all over the show checking out the scenary while trying to maintain a good speed, the two don't mix.

5 weeks to go.

Still, the sun is shining today, and it is Kowhai Festival Market Day so we are off to the wine and food tent :D And I hear a rumour that an old friend we have not seen in forever is coming for a visit tomorrow :wings: So all is good.

I have completed my first ride on my bike today, went to my Mum and Dad's place, then called in at friends who live on the same road, must have averaged a speed of 80km but it was quite windy and was catching me in the head a bit, worse on the way home than on the way out. How the hell I'm gonna get bike fit enough for a huge Cape ride is beyond me, but I'll give it a go. I'm probably gonna be the slowest so put me in a group that doesn't mind, I don't want people to be disapointed with the pace I'm going. Other than that I really enjoyed it, Just need to practise, practise, practise.

You will be fine. You will improve very quickly. We go as fast as the slowest rider anyway.

The more you ride the more relaxed you are.

My first >50kph ride had me a bit worried. I didn't get very far before turning around and coming home. The wind was catching me and I could feel it on my ankles and down the front of my jacket.

The next time I tried I had bought boots and and something to keep the wind off my neck. The lack of cold wind made me more comfortable. You get used to the wind catching you a little bit pretty quick though. Keep giving it a go

Hi Five for your first ride out!

Wind - something that you will get used to very quickly  Important to grip the bike with your legs, and relax your arms on the bars. You might move around a bit, but that is ok, you wont get blown over. It is just a thing you have to get used to on a bike is all.

Speed - dont stress, we are a Learner and Newbie ride by name and by purpose. We dont ride fast, we ride as fast as our slowest rider, and that is just fine :sunny:

And you go gal! Ride and ride and ride :scooter:

I had a failed attempt at getting out of plaster yesterday, the ankle bone has not healed at all so I am back in a cast again. I hope like hell it will heal up in time, but being totally honest with myself I doubt I will be riding to the Cape this time. I have been referred to an orthopedic surgeon with a view to perhaps having a pin inserted to hold the bone together again, I definately wont be riding if that happens :pinch:

I was prepared to take the car if I was not ride fit in time, now it appears I will HAVE to take the car, but here is the biggest problem of all. I cant drive either

I am looking for a driver please. One with a license :pinch: One over 25 to cover off my insurance. I will need transport from Warkworth to the Cape and back again as part of this ride. It will mean someone having to take that Friday off work/study. As payment for their driving skills I will pay the standard $150 cost for the weekend for them, they can buy their own refreshments

Do any of you guys know someone that can help me out? I will ask out on the big forum if I dont get any joy in here.

Anyone?

 Mom

May re-think what I want to bring. Bike not easy to ride with a load on. I went to Pukekawa to ride motocross bikes today and carried my tools etc on the bike. I had panniers on and my pack rack bag and it was fairly heavy.

Bike was hard to get up on the stand to.

Mind you the old girl still pulled up the southern side of the Bombays at 100kph no worries. Not bad for a 25 year old 250.

Too much risk for sure. Mom will mnot get a boot over her cast and can not be riding bare toes!

I know how you feel Anne, but at least mine was the left leg and I could drive.
Someone will front up, mark my words...it will all be fine on the day.

As Yungatart has said, I wont risk losing my toes for any money. Then I have to carry my crutches etc  No, I wont ride or pillion, or drive with my leg in plaster. Appart from the fact I am not allowed to, I dont have any insurance if I drive in plaster.

Hi Newbi,
The ride is a learner ride so there will be lots of people that want to look at the scenery and will be happy to ride with you. I have ridden Auckland to Taupo and back at 70kph. Saw the rider I was shepherding become a hard arse biker on that trip, an awesome experance. You just enjoy the ride, if any one wants to go faster they have the option to fu#k off. Regards Richard

I'm off into town tomoro for the first time, will be nice and quiet on a Sunday, Hopefully. Look forward to meeting you come November. Thanks, Jo.

I had cramps in my wrist too when I started. Mainly due to the newbie grip of death. I rode everyday (except when it was raining) and was nice and relaxed in a few weeks.
Keep at it you'll be fine

Hey Mom, if need be I can drive you (I qualify on the license and age fronts) if no-one else offers, I would like to ride BUT I'd rather still see you have a wicked weekend away with the rest of us! So let me know if anyone else puts their hand up, otherwise I'd be happy to oblige.

Get yourself some rain gear and get out in the wet as riding in the rain taught me a whole bunch of valuable riding lessons. For one how to be a lot smoother on the throttle.

We will leave the start point at 9.30am sharp.
Ride up the M/Way and exit at the Orewa off ramp taking us via Waiwera.
Our first stop will be at Wellsford.
This is a 5 min leg stretch stop only.

Coffee/Food and fuel will be at the Gull Whangarei.
That makes each leg around the 80K mark.

The road is no more slippery wet than dry for the most part. Stay off painted lines and the like, they are very slippery. Read the road ahead of you, if it looks slippery chances are it will be. You will be fine though. The roads up there are designed to encourage a learner to get out and do it!

Its all about the easy in easy out option...that Caltex is on the other side of the road and controlled by lights so no.
The reason Gull was chosen was, it also has a bakery attached..fuel for the bike and body.
GAS (Marsden) and Caltex Oakleigh where the two ther contenders but were lacking in the food/toilet department.
You could get to Paihia on tank?

The petrol all comes down the same pipes from Marsdon...<_<

Last time I went into Gull was heading out of town in the car wanted a full tank they are now strictly prepay, wouldn't give out cash on EFTPOS had to prepay $100 their maximum and then fill up then go back in and get an EFTPOS credit, needless to say I have not been back if they still use that policy it will be slow for anyone wanting to top off rather than nominate an amount.
You could turn right at the lights at Maunu Rd on the arrow (first intersection on the main drag through Whangarei with Traffic Lights) and into the BP good coffee and food there.

First time back on the bike since my incident yesterday. Pootled around the suburbs for a bit then went to town for uni, pootled round then back to to the shore, back to town for uni again and back home. I'm not ride fit. My legs are killing me.

Also my battery appears to be buggered. A friendly stranger helped me get it started while I was in town then it cut out on the motorway. Another biker stopped behind me while I got it going again.

Gull was using a Biofuel mix last time I looked and i won't run my bike on that shit or 91 (even if the other companies do I ain't seen it advertised and so that makes it ok) - was reasoning behind wanting to go elsewhere, but I can shoot to Mobil or BP and fill up and come back.

Won't be like a quick 5 minute stop at all with that many bikes and I can avoid a queue.

But the good news is that the bike ran mint for the whole trip! I'm absolutely stoked, I was a little nervous about a rust filled radiator, but it seems to be fine after a good flushing out. Apart from that, I've got the bike back up to scratch apart from the fairings, it kinda looks like a streetfighter still... I have perfect vision in my right eye. my left eye is blurry so i cant read with it but i can still see enough to tell there is a car coming. its like looking at the world slightly out of focus.

And yea. NZTA require you pass THEIR eye test, or have a no glasses form thats less than 60 days old.

optometrist cost $65 to do this. doc's cost 15-25 depending on where you go.

: Three Groups.
: Each Group leader will control group speed. (80-100kph)
: There will be no passing within the (each) group.
: Passing lanes?...use left lane (unless group leader feels the whole group can get past that fucking truck)
: Always use your indicators to signal your intention on passing lanes
: Use of Mirrors is paramount in a group riding situation...please use them...always.
: Watch you following distance with the bike in front, that person is your friend.
: Staggered formation where possible, no single file on the straight bits.
: We do not want cars splitting any of the groups.
: If a car is bothering you in any way, indicate left and slow (where safe to do so) and wave them passed.
: Finally...please try and stay within 5-6 bike lengths with the bike in front.
: Second Finally...have a way cool time!

All of that yes...
I was going to try and group everyone on here before the 17th but its a bit difficult, the likes of you/blue rider/spokes and Armi for argument sake will in my group.
The expectation of each rider will be to 'not loose sight of the bike in front or the group' so whos in each group wont really be an issue.

There is no 'fast' group...fast on this ride is open road speed...
I will be totally pissed if any tickets or bins occure due to dumb shit..
The roads up north are made for 'taking it all in' ..life goes by quick enough without forcing the issue..

I would hazard a guess that, 'fast' means up to 100km/h. I know my bike can't go much faster then that, and I am not rich enough to pay for repairs if I bin, so i'm not going to be riding like a squid. That probably goes for most on this ride.

Yep you'll notice I managed to avoid using the word 'fast' as fast it most definately won't be! It will just be for the slightly more confident riders to do a normal open road speed. So for those of us on restricted or full licences i'd say. Can't wait! :scooter:

On the money there.
I said ealier that the group leaders will control the speed. If anyone has issue with the group they are in, they can swap groups at any of the stops.
I trust the group leaders and I know they will do thier best to keep thier 'followers' happy..:scooter:

That...
We have been generously offered a Vehicle/Bike Recovery service if needed for whatever reason.
So if anything should happen to a bike over the three days then not to worry, we have it covered.

First leg of the Ride
We will leave the start point at 9.30am sharp.
Ride up the M/Way and exit at the Orewa off ramp taking us via Waiwera.
Our first stop will be at Wellsford.
This is a 5 min leg stretch stop only. Coffee/Food and fuel will be at the Gull Whangarei.
That makes each leg of the ride around the 80Km mark.

RIDE BRIEF WILL BE AT 9:15AM
Keep checking post 1 for updates

I can vouch for the Office having really good food, however if its wet there inside area would be a bit cramped for that many bikers, also there food can be a little slow at times. Pizza barn obviously has good food and great service also + plus ample room to fit our requirements as well as probably being able to reserve a table for us around the specific time we require it.

Good thinking batman...re the Pizza barn.
Yeah we have been to the office before, food was great (the half breakfast yes:)) haven't booked any rain for that weekend but I like your idea on table reservation at Waipu, they can get busy there at times.

Lol I wouldn't worry about chicken strips, the only place you really get the chance to rub them off is on the race track. While our roads are good compared to some of the rest of the world, they weren't designed for racing, or massive lean angles on 'bikes.

Good to hear you had a mint day's riding though!

By the way, I had pizza for dinner... Homemade even! YUM!

Some shorts, jandals, t'shirt, jumper, undies/toiletries, bottle of water, rain gear and whatever motorbike gear you are going to be wearing on the ride. Maybe a pair of draggin jeans or similar if you have some and that should see you fairly well right.

Worse thing I find on a long ride is dehydration and dry skin/lips (Chapstick is the bomb).
