I've ridden in rain before tonight but I guess this was my first proper rain since I was wet under my gear and my gloves started leaking dye onto my hands.

I'm no Rossi but, now that I'm really getting to know the Katana after having it for six moths I'm very plesaed with how I can throw it around. Even fully loaded with camping gear I don't really notice any difference in the handling. As for power I certainly have no problem slotting in between cars at open-road speeds from a standing start (as you may have observed tonight). Mostly I ride between 4 and 6 thou rpm (top gear at 100k is about 4,500) but when you want to get moving a quick twist really delivers.

The attachment below is from a site that I find reasonably good for bike comparisons (once you get past all the flashy ads). The red line is for the GSR750 and the blue line is the GSX750F (known as the Katana in the U.S.)

It seems to boil down to the fact that the Katana is a sports-tourer and more of an all-rounder whereas the GSR is a sports-naked and more of a "track-style" or street-fighter.

On paper the GSR is 30kg heavier with a top speed 10mph lower and a smaller tank (17.5L compared to 20 on the Katana).

This, of course is comparing 750s. I've heard opinions that the Katana 600 is a bit low on power which is one reason I went for the 750 (apart from it being in the right place at the right time).

Perhaps the low on power aspect would be a good stepping stone as well

ah now i know who you are. could you pls make your signature a big longer????!!!!
It is perhaps a bit long winded but each of the quotes speaks to me in a visceral sence.

I would add more but I've reached the software's limit

Oh, that takes me back. I remember taking off my gloves after a particularly wet day as a courier - 8 hours or more in terrential rain - to find I had black hands.

Irene was unfortunate enough to have several days in a row like this and her hands actually started to rot!

swbarnett
4th December 2011, 23:32
Hmm, seems the Katana would suit my desires more, as I would like to travel abit eventually. Maybe a little more comfortable as well, and cheaper haha
It certainly is comfortable. When everybody was complaining about numb bum on the cape ride I was still fresh as in that department. I've done Gisborne to home via Napier (about 620km) in one stretch only stopping for petrol (nice early start had a late lunch when I got home). About 6.5hrs straight and still felt like I could continue.

I did a test last week. I put a 4L container of petrol in the top box and ran the tank dry - 360km (about 5.5L/100km). All things considered, and Gremlin's GS not withstanding, not a bad range for NZ.

Perhaps the low on power aspect would be a good stepping stone as well
I've not riden the 600 (I'll have to hit you up for a test-ride if you do get it). Certainly those complaining about it's power were probably experienced speed junkies. Anyway, from a 250 you'd probably not be dissapointed.

Heated grips for xmas pressie is your hint, they at least keep fingers warm when gloves get wet,I was given a set and first thing I put on new bike,a few times with rain the fingers get chilly, but turn heat up a notch, awesome idea.

Alot of the damage to the 250 was done a while ago and the only recent one was the lovely diesel one, which was more of an unfortunate event than anything.
Have you looked at the price of smaller bikes recently?, they are over priced and a waste of money for what you get and since I don't have too long till I need to upgrade I would rather just get the next thing and save the trouble.
I find that there are times I do need the power, splitting, dangerous situations where it is best to blast through than brake, longer trips and a variety of other situations.

Also, the more I calculate it, the slimmer the chances of getting that bike are anyhow so it is more of a dream.

There will be one or two from the last ride that wont be able to make this one.
All those on the Cape ride will get first dibs, but I can safely say that you'll be there.
We will be looking at around the same numbers as the Cape ride.
We had several Scorpio's on that ride.

1....There was quite a bit food wasted, and some missed out on bacon/sausages/hangi food because of it.
There was food left on plates (not eaten) which happens, but the number attending was catered for to keep the price per head down.
We discussed how this could be remedied.
2....Perhaps do the dishes in the units when used (I did, this weekend like a good boy) ...that alone, helps them.

Remember, we keep the Price per Head as low as we can to ensure a great weekend is had by all.
$150-160 per head with two nights accommodation and for hot meals is hard to come by anywhere.
They loved having us there and cant wait till we return...

You got a job Carmel...:niceone:

Stopped in and had a chinny with George Formby on Friday...nice lunch was had sitting in the perfect Paihia sunshine.

We caught up with Laava and his lovely wife Jo (they were at Coopers for the weekend) and spent the day with them on Sunday.
Went all the way up East Beach in his Ute (a first for us) as far as the Houhora harbour inlet.
Then across to Ninety Mile beach and drove down to Ahipara, where we helped a well bogged Hire Van out of its position.

We had a look at the road between Taipa and Rangitihi, Al said its a good road for bikes. He was right, even with the seven Kms of unsealed bit, which is hard packed and wide as any road...
So we'll be doing that road through to Ahipara then onto Herekino and Kohukohu and may use that road on the return.
Because there is Ice Creme there.

Honda at Pottery place/Ahipara looking north/Coopers looking back to the San Marino/East Beach Houhora Harbour Inlet.

Yes Mark, sadly we did.
Our aim that day was to drive to the Kaitaia markets/Ahipara but got side tracked with friends at Coopers.
Mr Laava sugessted that road...he knew you lived along there, as did I..but two things...I didn't have a contact number nor did I know where your whare was.
We ended up at the Pottery place way the hell out off the beaten track...thats where the Honda 90 was.

We are heading up to the San Marino on Friday for a few days.
A dry run for the November Ride to firm up the dates/price per head (and body) and look at a couple of *variations/options on the first trip to the Cape.
Wont quite make it to the lighthouse this weekend, but will go part way up Cape Road to check out a couple of things.

* Part ride on ninety mile beach for those who want to/Pukenui for the Lunch stop/Te kao for Northlands biggest Ice cream.

The San Marino sleeps about 20, maybe squeeze in a few more so up to 24 ...that's the cut off point (no worries for tenters though) of which about a 1/3 are normally learner riders.
Three groups of eight or so bikes. Faster/more experienced riders in groups 1-2.
Looking at Nov' 15-16-17 at this early stage.

May get an end of Winter overnighter ride in, late August.

With 24 bikes/people in tow, it takes a while to get anywhere, lunch is just over an hour stop at Paihia. The whole three days is relaxed with a lot of laughs.
Our regular stops on the way up are Kaiwaka/Whangarei Gull and Paihia...last year, a group split off with a local and did the Matuari bay loop arrive just ten minutes behind the rest of us at Coopers beach.

This ride is designed for the learner/newer rider, you must be bike fit at the very least. The longest stint in the seat is 83kms. We stop at 83km (coffee/pie) 62kms (fuel and bum rest) 70kms (lunch break about an hour) 82kms (full stop)
That is day one 297kms...Day two is 260kms to the cape and back, a real easy ride. Day three is 336kms back to Auckland.
For some like yourself, as a guide, ride from Takapuna to Hampton downs (75kms) without a stop and you can do this ride. plus maintain a decent speed, that is all motorway where a constant 100kph is doable.

300 kms between the hours of 9:30am-4:30pm..we take all day, you were on the Naki ride, 80ks stop 80ks stop 80ks stop and lunch is about an hour stop..I say it all time, these rides are designed around the 'getting there when we can' policy. Why rush, the San Marino aint going anywhere.

I must add also (if I haven't already) there will be stretch on the 90 Mile Beach for those who want to do that.

You tempt me, sir! I did cheat a little on the 'Naki trip by starting from Hamilton! I guess if I stay in Auckland overnight it would reduce the Day 1 distance (300 from dairy flat, plus the 150 or so to get there!). It would be nice to see the old place again (spent all my Primary school years just up the hill from the San Marino) looking at it on google maps, I hardly recognise the place!

Get a sportsbike. It's better at cruising than a cruiser. Haha

Yes, I have figured that out, much to my dismay. Once I sit my full test I will be looking to change. Though I don't think it's all cruisers, but the Boulevard was designed as a city cruiser, from what I can tell. My friend has a Honda Shadow, and he does regular trips to Wellington, no problems. He is a little crazy though. That probably helps!

Greetings all,

As usual I'll wander down and meet everyone at Whangarei. And if needed the usual far north breakdown facilities will be available. I only say this because by saying that they are available no one then needs to use them. Which is what we all want. Maha, if you want some one to take a group up or down 90 mile beach (depends on the tides for which is best) then I am available for that. Waitiki Landing has been rebuilt and so gas is now available again up there. It's noy cheap gas but definitely beats walking.

Thanks Mark, was counting on you leading the beach part on the Saturday...I was thinking of the coffee/lunch break at Pukenui http://kaitaia.ljhooker.co.nz/7YGGEE

Greetings all,

The ride is definitely not for those under 53 because I'm way past that date........

90 mile beach is actually 58 miles long and has 4 access points that are suitable for vehicles.

The beach is best enjoyed from 2 hours after high tide to no later than 2 hours before the next high tide. And according to my reading of the tide chart for the 16th high tide on the 16th of November is just before 9am and just after 9pm.

From the south - Ahipara to Waipapakauri is about 20km, Waipapakauri to Houhora access is just over 20km and Houhora access to Te Paki is around 50km. The 2 20km sections are dead easy, pretty straight and other than sand dunes and waves there isn't much to see. The best section is the bit from Houhora to Te Paki as there is the Bluff to stop at and Te Paki stream to ride up with the huge dunes where you rejoin the road. Riding from south (Ahipara) to north (Te Paki) is best as the fresh water stream washes a lot of the salt off the bike.

Which parts we do will be up to the enthusiasm on the day, and the timing. With gas being available near the top options are greater as well. Lunch will always be a delayed affair in the far north - unless we stop where the bus tours do cafes etc are not very well geared to having 20+ people arrive in one go. But that adds to the fun and strange goings on that make this event somewhat unique.

Does anyone want to do the very scenic Matauri Bay Kaeo loop on the Friday afternoon. If you like I can even swot up on local stuff and become a tour guide for this bit!

Maha

''Which parts we do will be up to the enthusiasm on the day, and the timing.''
Agree, there may well be the odd Newbie that wants to do the beach part so that has to be put into the equation, best talk that part over in person on the Friday once at the San Marion or the Saturday Morning.

''Lunch will always be a delayed affair in the far north - unless we stop where the bus tours do cafes etc are not very well geared to having 20+ people arrive in one go''
I intend to call them (Pukenui) and let them know the week before as per numbers etc.

''Does anyone want to do the very scenic Matauri Bay Kaeo loop on the Friday afternoon''
That was a bit of a hit last year (sorry Mr Cow) so probably a goer this year. Get that sorted at lunch in Paihia on the Friday.

''But that adds to the fun and strange goings on that make this event somewhat unique.''

I have just spoken to Debbie at the San Marino to clarify a few things. The new manager takes over September 5th so any further bookings can be made after that date. Which is about the time of the new thread.
The $180 gets you a bed in a unit and meals, if you are single, you will be sharing or you pay $360. But the instructions are that all available beds to have someone in it.
To keep the price at what it is, they need to fill all the beds, plus a few tents.

For a little while?...you mentioned the Mangamukas earlier, is it your intention to do that on the way up or on the way back. I ask because the ride itself is not going that way and it will mean splitting the ride up which is not what it is all about. If doing the Mangamukas on the Sunday is an option, then I have no problem with that. There will some doing the Matuari bay loop on the way as per last year buts that's on the way up. See how it goes, but your help will be appreciated as always.

Count me as booked too please. Probably only way I'd survive the ride! And I think there maybe one other from further south that might be keen for a place to stay, depending on if going on the ride at all.

I wont accept ''the may come on the ride'' this time, gets a little embarrassing for catering/accom purposes when I say that X amount is coming, only to have 5-6 pull the pin days before the ride.
To put it prospective, If that were to happen on this ride, it could be a loss of about $1000 to the San Marino.
The San Marino sleeps about 20, 24 at a push plus tents (I will get that confirmed later via email) and the they need the beds full at the price we are paying.

There are some that don't see the ride till late anyway, and by then it is normally full, I have had in the past a waiting list of 3-4. But it always is a bit late for some to organise a Friday off at short notice when someone decides ''they now can't or don't wont to or something has come up''.
Any non KBer wanting to come can logon and ask the question. These rides are primarily for KBers, learners and those who like the tour pace.

But your sleep space here (and there) is safe Doug (so far they have four bookings)

A couple of points in an Email from Debbie...easier for me to just copy/paste.

'' I am here until Friday morning 30th, so if there are people to book, please get them to ring or email me tonight or tomorrow - if possible. I will tell the new lady who is managing the motel what is happening, but it would be easier for her, if people get hold of me tonight''.

'' If the weather is not fine, would the guests prefer Nari to cook a big lasagne and do salads etc instaed of a BBQ ?? She is good with that.''

Nari is the new manager, a chef by trade.
I don't want to go through all this in the new thread, tis why I am doing it now.

Singles have to share, I have been over this so many times, it comes down to cost. If one or two take up space in a unit that sleep 4 its not fair. The San Marino can sleep 25-27 inside.
If snoring/bashing people/sleep walking or any other quirky things you do may annoy others, the tenting is the answer.

I'm only asking. I didn't say I wouldn't share, just that I'd prefer not to share with *too many* people. That's why I was wondering if there might be a room that is only suitable for a couple of people. No harm in asking, I didn't think.

If you decide to come along book into unit 7 with us girls, I think 3 is max in that unit unless there is a chicky who is willing to share with another in the double.
That might be a go-er. Definitely can't share a bed though, forgot to mention I also kick in my sleep, one time I even slapped the ex in the face in the midst of a dream.

You've been warned.

A few points from last years thread...same will apply this year.

:This ride is Learner Friendly
:One Group will be for the more Spirited Riders

*Tenting is an option (cost pp is the same, use of toilet/shower in units)
: Those that want to tent, feel free, you will be meters from the sand/sea..

* Rooms are on a Twin/Triple/Quad/Quin share or more basis.
Last year there were up to 5 blokes in one unit ....3 girls in another etc, worked well.

*The meaning of regroup.
...is to stop and regroup. Not take gear off and light up a smoke

Just think calm sandy beaches... calm sandy beaches.

And I am sure the road on the top of the hill used to be called Pa Road?

Singles have to share,
It seems not only singles. We are booked in to unit 2; this has a fold-down couch and I was told that we'd have to have this occupied as well. As a couple we're not keen to share so I emailed back asking if there's a unit that only sleeps 2 (I've since seen on the web site that there is so shouldn't be a problem I hope, still waiting for a reply).

You don't have to share, I will email her as well, you guys are paying $360 as are Anne and myself. Our room has the queen bed only.
She said you had booked and that '' there is a dbl bed settee in unit 2 - so may have to share if needed'' ...but it wont be needed.

I have just emailed her also.

Or... can the tramp be used as a tent?

I am sure it will all work out for everyone. I got a brand new cast today :second: and a referral to a specialist towards the end of September. Bloody thing had best be ok by then, or I will be very unhappy.
