Hey,
Just replaced both rocker arms, as I had developed a bad clacking from the top of the motor. AT first I thought I might have done something wrong when I installed the MCCT from rally raid...but it wasn't that.
SInce I didn't know which one was failing, I got both...pretty cheap so why stress over which one, and if one was going perhaps the other might (or might not). Easy replacement to do at home...so did it yesterday. Also has bought the hotcams shim kit so that I got all the sizes at my fingertip.
SOoo much better, and power has returned as well. The last couple of weeks, I've hated riding the bike...noisy, bad starting, lost low end power...etc.
I don't see this failure/wear as a bad thing, its the price to pay for superb performance...33000k's
V
Hey Veg, agree, small price to pay for the performance you get fom the LC4. Haven't had any problems with mine, the engine is still pretty tight and aint noticed any power drop. Its comming up to 28k on the clock but will get the rockers checked at next service.
Dropped into KTM Hamilton dealer on my way to Auckland on saturday to check out the new 1190 adv...sweet looking bike but not my cup o tea...but they did have a 2013 690 on the floor which much more appealing

:nono: bit like that in Tahoroa but worse! Protecting those Ironsands and beaches....aye boys, remember?
picture a quad bike meeting you on the beach and on the back, a machete and a couple of not so happy locals....:(
anyway, that is a lovely bit of riding, out there....both destinations, especially Te Araroa and the ride out East Cape Rd.

As I was reading your write-up, heavy rain pounding on our corrogated iron roofed house, I can't help but think what the conditions must be like up on Kahuraniki tonight; not a place I would like to be right now but on the day we visited....absolutely stunning!

Just had another look at Barts RR. That photo of Mark's new KLR reminded me how he was lamenting his top box wasn't compact and orange like mine...the new bike seems a lot faster than the old one though....he beat us all to the pub by least half an hour :shifty:

Would of but the rear wheel bearings feels rather sad on the DR, 9,000 Kms since january on a set of "all balls" crap really so will get some better quality ones from Seiko's next week. Found out on Wednesday on the taihape road thought I would do Barts day 2 of the RRRR did Comet road with some great views from the top :cold:, didn't feel right back on the road & found the slop in the rear wheel, Takapari road will have to wait (still havnt been up there) Checked out a few side tracks on the way home & a spot of fishing. Bearings feel real shabby when I got home.:sweatdrop

Went for burn up the hills - awesome views! The fire breaks where pretty hair raising with all the rain we've had but heaps of fun sliding all over the place :2thumbsup. Mooooooomentis amounts of cows and sheep on the roads and none of them wearing hi viz
Experimented with the gopro set up and finally got it right! Unfortuneatly broke one of the bendy locking tabs off the mount - don't know how that happened  tried to order a replacement from Racetech in smellington but their online shopping isn't working - pitty cos I wanted to get a wifi remote and mounting kit as well. Anywhoooo will have to do a phone order on Monday.
I love adventure riding in the Bay at this time of year, despite it being a little nippy :cold:

Pomgolian, those wheel bearings sound fine to me... hehe its all good till they start ejecting glowing red hot cigarette but sized pieces out side of axle!!!
Bit off topic but thought many of you with a technical bent would be interested in seeing this truck trailer one that failed on an artillery hub. Was on a unit that I normally didn't tow, no noises noticeable over the usual squeaks and rattles...

Yeah did that site on my first one and big snow also. Don't worry about a room in Waiouru, support vehicles are allowed now, there was a field the size of paknsave the other year full of emmmm. I bunged my gear in friends car for homeward bound leg lol People have their own couches and bbqs now, getting bit fancy, then there's the trailer motox 24hr endures lol...

Thanks Robin.
I was Merino wrapped plus the bike gear so wasn't too bad, finally got round to fitting the antifog pinlock insert to visor so can ride with it closed at lowspeed and that helped too.
Snow plowing sure is good for polishing dirt of wheels and boots! Never done the ski thing, everyone I know who goes near those gets more broken bones than a biker! Maybe one day...
Here's the view across the road from Ngamatea station.

Spring is only 28 days away :woohoo: A great time for adventure riding in the bay. Spent some time in the garage today sorting out some issues on the 690 and giving it its annual physical.
Managed to straighten out a rather disfigured looking break pedal, sanded a few scratches out of the safari tank, fixed a broken indicator. Tried to find out why my speedo digital display keeps disappearing...suspect the speedo is on the way out again, first one was replaced under warranty but not likely to get another one on the good folks at KTM this time. Looked on line at those Trail Tech Vapour jobbies which look like a good alternative and are way cheaper than the OEM one. Has anyone fitted one of these? Are they any good?

Its one of those times when you wish you had a video cam with you, had an amazing ride on the Air forces 'DR" last friday, old design, Simple , strong and can do pretty much anything, Im talking about the mighty Bell UH 1H Huey or "Iraquoi" as its known here. About 40 mins at low level west of Ohakea, High speed along the beach just above the sand, over Sandhoft forest and then over to the Manawatu river and down and twisting and banking following the course of the river. The big side doors were locked open so when the chopper was banked hard over I was looking straight down, the massive "Chop" of the big rotor was pure music, The bloody thing shakes and vibrates like you wouldn't believe during hard turns. freaking amazing ride.
Also had some serious Glamour sitting in the crewman's seat, non other than Miss Louise Nelson who was crowned Miss Manawatu recently, she is a crewman in 3 squadron RNZAF.
Also had a play in the huge flight sim for the new 109 training helicopter, makes any computer game look stupid, the sadistic bugger in the control room was happily bringing on lightning storms, fire warnings, dropping one engine out etc, lucky I had a "Real" pilot in the other seat and he just calmly took over each time and dealt with each of the "situations" The whole time threatening his mate about the amount of shouts he was accumulating. Flew the 109 over Palmy, over the wind farm and around Woodville and back to Ohakea via Pahongina valley. Awesome multi million dollar Toy.
Waiting for photos to get sorted out and will post when available

Im an Officer in the Ruahine Cadet Unit and we, along with the Lower Hutt Cadet Unit "invaded" Ohakea last thursday evening for a "Barrack Weekend". The Cadet Forces staff there manage to pull some strings ( more like bloody big ropes) and get 3 Sqn to do an actual flight tasking to give the Cadets a ride they will never forget. We had 38 kids there so it took 5 flights, A Huuuuuge thumbs up to the Air Force The look on their faces in the hanger when 3 Sqns resident beauty queen finally told them at the end of the briefing that they were getting a ride was bloody priceless, (We had kept it a secret) An awesome Adventure ride was had by all.

As soon as it gets dry enough and when time permits, there will a chooky, trials, trail ride on a 2,000 acre farm in Wairoa with the emphasis on trials riding. Great chance to brush up on those low speed skills, Huge variety of terrain available so it can be as technical as you want to make it. Not very big bike friendly as some of us have already found out.
Also, We have permission to get on Smedley stn (Google it) so a tour of this iconic stn will be organised during the summer some time, Will get the chance to see the site of the proposed Dam, (Supposedly) the same height as Benmore.
AND, Ive got access through Te Apiti stn so next coast ride will be from Waimarama down through the stn to Kairakau beach then on down the coast as usual but going a bit further south past the longest place name and through some shingle roads back around through Weber and back up to Waipuk.
So watch this space.
if you lot are doing nothing this Sat, The Classic club have got their monthly ride starting at 1.30 from Clive BP, usual stop at a pub somewhere then back to the club rooms for refreshments and a Barby. Some of us are already members, Awesome bunch of people and an amazing selection of bikes, can be over 100 bikes on a good day, Normally a few trailies in the mix, You dont have to ride in a group if you dont want to.
Cheers

We can meet you in Dannevagus and head inland or you can meet us Havelock and we head off down the coast? I'm happy either route. Low tide is 2.30pm ish so beach section is doable if we left Havelock after at about 9.30am?

Sounds like you guys had a great ride, re the Classic Rally, What an incredible collection of old 2 wheeled machinery.
Riding with bikes like a Vincent Black Shadow, 1940s Harleys and Injuns plus all the old British brands, all in mint condition and to see 3 of Honda's finest trailies being ridden together was awesome, An Elsinor, Xl250 and an XL350, all early 70s and fully restored to mint condition. One guy had ridden his old 1941 Army Indian from Wairoa, the fact that he was 15 years older than his bike was legend. Two nights of partying and some of the stories (and Jokes) those old riders had to tell was entertainment plus.

it looked like the long weekend was gunna end without me getting in any sort of motorcycle ride..so late this arvo i took off for a little backyard loop.
napier to eskdale, up waipunga road (saw a guy coming out on what looked like triumph tiger 800 ) on to kaiwaka road which is mostly sealed nowadays
then popped out on the wairoa highway then over into the aropaoanui road. i was initially thinking of heading down to explore the beach then through the bush trail to waipatiki, but ended up exploring a few forestry tracks where the gates were open...for a downhill mountain bike track complete with jumps which made for an ok trail detour. eventualy got onto the bush trail (unlocked gates about 8km down aropauanui rd on the right hand side. the track itself is a bit over grown but easily passable, last time i went through it a pine tree had fallen over the trail but thats been cleared now. the trail ends (or starts depending on you direction) with a shallow creek crossing and onto a green reserve at the bottom of the waipatiki hill. next time ill explore the aropaoanui end of that trail as it heads up a bit of a hill and goes a fair way toawrd the coastline afaik. anyways i was home in time for tea and at least i can go to work tmw safe in the knowledge i managed to get in a ride however brief :woohoo:

:nono: That'll be the HBMTB downhill trails... From what I hear you wouldn't want to be going to far down them on a DR, supposed to be pretty steep.
Think I saw you, Black DR? Took the cage and a friend up Boundry stream for BushWalk.
If you follow that Arapanui trail pats the farm gates it comes up to a fence before the coast and DOC sign saying closed due to slips.

Colour coded...nice.
Next time I’m up that way I’ll have to have a nosey around.
The only ride I got in was to the family farm to firewood some trees that came down in the wind the other day. Going out again today to play on some big toys (bulldozer etc) to sort a massive gum that fell on a pole shed. Didn’t do too much damage. We’ll probably do more damage removing it.

Keeping hydrated is going to be a biggy, especially if its a warm day, The riding will be as technical as you want to make it,
Armour will not be required,(optional) just a good helmet and boots. A lot of it will be in 1st or 2nd gear, some river flats but most is rolling to steep. Rough tracks, many are partly overgrown with Manuka so branch dodging is part of the deal.
if the the water in the creeks is clear, its drinkable plus there are a couple of big springs with lovely cool water.

Where we went in is way past the tavern. Went for a nosy in there a few years ago, rode for about an hour before turning round as we were on our way to puroa forrest so didn't have a lot of time - its huge country in there and well worth a visit. My 4wd mate says you could easily make a weekend of it but you need to be well supplied as its not called frost flat for nothing :cold:. He can give us maps and gps of his camp site and tracks but he said its pretty easy to navigate. was planning on a small reconnaissance ride in there to see if its worth taking the crew in for an offical adventure.

SF70. I have heard that is a spectaculary important, rare & endangered environment & DOC don't want anybody going in there. However I don't think they have ever bothered to put up a sign advising the 99.99% of the population that aren't in the Taupo 4wd club of that. Keep to the main tracks but.
I haven't been in for a few years but there was a nice loop, big downhill then climb at the top end to cross the stream which, then, meant the track was best done clockwise. Going up the southern side & back out the same way might not be too bad but to get right around would not be for big bikes. That was a while back though.
BTW we will be out at the Rec camp at Minginui Fri & Sat nights if anyone is keen on cruising over to say gday or camp over.

that area goes into native bush along clements mill road, we went in there on a central NI ride a-ways back, to view the 'kaimanawa wall'... just looks like a regular rock formation to me, but there are those who say it was cut and stacked by an ancient stonecutting peoples :sherlock:

rogerh and I stay at Rangitaiki pub and ride our trail bikes a few times each year. The ground is pumice base so gets scoured out by water runoff and the track condition varies each time.
The frost plain can be explored on adventure bikes but because it is so flat it is quite hard to orientate yourself. I recommend NOT attempting the loop downhills, otherwise you might be stuck in there until your bike grows wings :brick:
In the video the 2011, 12 captions are the hills and stream at the eastern end of the loop.

Holy Crap :eek5: Get well soon Marty! Having been rather painfully ambushed by a couple of sheep myself a few years back I can totally sympathise.
Cheers
Clint

Sue has been in contact with a wee update.
'Marty has chest drain out & is feeling more normal now. Still in a lot of pain & still in ICU, they are managing that. I can't get any indication when he will go to the ward, so still not really up for visitors. I have told him of every ones messages. Thanks to every one for their support.'
A little progress is good news Marty. We can't wait till you are sitting with the lap top in front of you  & giving us all shit ;)

I looked at what Scott had on at the cafe & thought I should upgrade. I've had enough of rib injuries..

Hope the ride went well guys :gob: out of ICU this arvo but still pretty sore and still no memory of most of last week. Hopefully things will improve over the next week or four. Hastings hospital staff for president :yes:they treated an old dodgy codger run down in his prime by a homocidal ram lamb with compassion, professionalism and good humor plus the puddings were nice as we'll. thanks team:woohoo:

Good to hear you are on the mend Marty. Keep us posted on your progress. Steve set a high standard after his roofing incident with xrays and the like, so that we could all see the gory details.
Cheers

Hi Marty, Good to see you out of ICU. It really wasn't necessary to be competitive about injuries you know. I bow to your greater capacity for that. I'm just off the phone to my parents who made me total up all the injuries I have receive as a result of the bike...
I know how long it took to get back after the back injury. If you or Sue need help in the next few months, let us all know & we will make sure that stuff gets done. :niceone: I'm really good at delegating

Wayne some of the X-rays would soften concrete but the real beauties are various colours of the brushing as it unfolded before your eyes....if it didn't hurt so much I would have taken more photos of that....maybe pic of the week material

I'm increasingly seeing visions on an orange trials/ enduro/ adventure bike of about 350cc capacity in my future motorcycling arrangements....more so after a large twat around the nut by a road in recent times....maybe something in it maybe not.........maybe though:weird:

Marty, welcome back buddy  You still haven't lost your wonderful sense of humour.
A great day!!! Ross, Eddie, Bart, Wade & moi. Thank you Ross so very much for organizing this ride. 2000 acres of hill country farm & me not ridden since MMMMM :brick: A few stupid offs . . . like 'where has the ground gone?' when you stop on a slope :argh:, the mud hole that almost swallowed the DR , me rolling backwards down a hill when Mrs DR stalled at the top of a lip  To name a couple.
Oh. . . did I say I got stuck in a couple muddy sections(didn't come off though):2thumbsup. Thanks guys for your help. You are FAB.
Missed you Marty, you were in our mind & often talked about at stops. "Marty would have loved this" or "Marty would have been right up there"
FALL OF THE RIDE. . . .was Ross's off on a tight narrow ledge into the manuka scrub. A bit of blood, pain & a upside down 2fifty

Welcome back Marty. I hope you heal up quick.
Good ride yesterday. Thanks for sorting it out Ross. Some big country in there.
I woke up during the night with massive leg cramps. I blame Wades DR350 for it. ’It kickstarts real easy’ he said...
Nah, it’s all good. Thanks for the lone of the bike. It was perfect for that terrain. :niceone:
Cheers guys. I’ll post up some photos when I get a chance.

We've yet to meet - been following your journey since your ill fated collision with the kamikaze sheep - glad you're recovering well Marty and the folk at the DHB are taking good care of you
As I ride into the Molesworth today - I've a heightened awareness of the possibility of a large steer lurching into my path!
Go well Marty and your Hawkes Bay ADV pals - Aslan :)

Cheers Aslan, we will definitely have to catch up for ride/chat at some stage. The Molesworth is beautiful country and holds a special place in my families history. Bill and Rachel Chisholm were both great friends of my parents. You definitely wouldn't want to meet up with Larry the lunatic Lambro in there though mate. Safe travels ...love to see some pics if ya get a chance to post any

I was involved in a big Army exercise in the bottom end of Molsworth back in 82, Came through Jacks Pass and ended up seing a big chunk of the bottom end of the Stn, The old St Helens/Tarndale area. ( You can go lotsa places when you are on tracks instead of tyres) Met up with the big man himself while I was there, amazing bloke, I dont think we will see his like again.
Thanks for your comments Aslan, hope you have a great ride down there and one day I hope we can show you around our place.

Still a little blurry about the accident. But, still talking motorcycles and riding, Good Conversation!
He was upset that he missed out on the "Ross Ride". ~Next Time~
He is hoping to be discharged in the next couple of days....will text him tomorrow and get the update.

Thanks for that update Wade. That's great news. Will pop up tomorrow Marty :-)
QUESTION GUYS. . . . gave the 2hundy a good clean. Took AGES trying to get all that grey wacke clay off that she was absolutely coated in. Now rear suspension is squeeky the moment you sit on the bike. Tried CRC. Still the same. Do you think some of that grey clay has got into the linkages/ suspension/ bearings? 13,000ks on 2hundy. Have only had rear wheel bearings done to date. Maybe time to get bike shop to check ?
Would value any comments.

You poor 35yr old boy. lots and lots front/back/middles/ends. What I think has happened is my left side has borne the brunt of hitting the end of the handle bar protectors at say 80- 110 kph. The X-ray shows (from foggy memory) the first eight ribs all having about an 80mm strip running from the broken collar bone and down about 350 - 400mm (about the width of the hand guard) of shattered bone maybe 3-5 breaks per rib. Surgeon says it will heal ok but it looks a mess. Hoping to get copy of the X-ray for exhibition and comment. Painful doesn't beguine to describe the pain either!!

GSers no worries bro I'm picking/ hoping the hospital is getting as sick of me as I am of being in it. They do have some spectacularly good drugs though :eek5:I'm not sure sitting in the lotus position for an hour a day is gonna do much for pain relief so hopefully I'll get a decent truckload to leave with. Or Sue is gonna get over me balling my eyes out every 10 mins pretty quickly. I might have to start looking at replacement options for the 690 as part of my pain recovery? 530 exc.....free ride......bmwf650
