Maybe this thread could be used for posting some of your fravourite routes and tracks for others to check out, or just to say your free to tag along if anyones planning a ride. Had recently been thinking about the Hawkes Bay Adventure ride that Tony W and XR Johhny and helpers organized a few years back.
Was an excellent ride :woohoo: with long fast flowing gravel roads and even a nice beach section thrown in for good measure and was run out of Hastings.
Bout time for another one eh, Tony / Johhny :drinkup:

Oooh yeah, another HB adv ride would be good.
I will keep an eye on this thread as any weekend rides in the Northern HB are in potentially in range for me.
There are a few spots around the HB that I want to do some more exploring in too, will keep ya's posted if we head over.
Cheers

A lot of that route is done each year on the RRRR. Speaking of which, I'd better start organising next years one.
But hey, I'd be keen on tagging along on another HBAR.

Great to see the enthusiasim. looks like theres a bit of challenge for the HB crew to string some gravel, sand and maybe some forrest tracks for a bit of a ride....something to work on for the summer. Went for a ride on Saturday through mohaka/tutira which had most of the ingrediants for a nice excursion. 200 plus klm of awsome riding for the day, nice :corn:

S'funny you should mention that, I was cruising around on the WAMS website the other day & it looks like you may be able to carve a wider loop around there, staying closer to the edge of the Ureweras & crossing to the other side of the Mohaka, there is one section in the middle through private forestry but a mate has just started working for that outfit...

We snuck into a foresty road :innocent: which was supposed to link up to Station road...2k into it and the road became a shear drop onto boldered river bed :gob:. A major slip had cleanedout the whole track! we had to turn back and take the long way round on the fast gravel roads....evry cloud has silver lining!!

....me organising something is dangerous.....but tempting at the same time.
Organising a ride is easy. You don't have to make it a fancy pre-planned ride anyway. Just meet up somewhere with a loose plan of heading in some general direction, with the aim of getting somewhere before dark.
Just don't forget the magic rule. Don't plan on going more than 50km an hour (less in a large group of smokers and latte drinkers). A 200km ride will take 4 hours plus. 400km will take over 8 hours. :scooter:
If you need info about Southern Hawkes Bay and Northern Wairarapa, I can help.

The only 2 questions I have are where to start and where to finish? I imagine once you've got that the bit in the middle should take care of its self:corn: but I should be able to manage 50klm hr with some practice  That track we went over with you was cool but lot furhter for those North of the boarder

Theres a little bit of off road/forestry you can do off Waiptiki Rd, which takes you through to Aropaoanui Rd. Did a couple years back. Not toooo difficult. That section could be good in a ride if not closed off now.

We went through both those roads couple weeks back...found an open forestry road which we explored for 2k was awsome but always had the feeling we were tresspasing :shutup:not sure what the rules are for paper roads? there are lots of roads/tracks around there though We also been checking out the Kaweka ranges which is simply riding nervana but all the roads have locked gates :crybaby:

Comet hut isn't a bad ride. I've been meaning to have a bit more of a look around, but never seem to have time when doing the Taihape/Napier road. :violin: It's on my 'to do' list for the summer.

:not sure what the rules are for paper roads? :
The rules for paper roads (or 'unformed legal roads' ) are: go hard
Just make sure you are on the actual paper road line, check out the WAMS website for maps & take a GPS. If there is a locked gate on a paper road you are fully entitled to go over/under/around/through-with-your-gas-axe unless a temporary (and it does have to be genuinely temporary) closure has been notified & signposted by the council.
It is good manners to inform the adjacent farmers if you are planning to travel on a rarely used paper road & be aware that it is lambing at present so some spots may best be left for later in the year.
Cheers

If there is some good riding to be done on some fairly non - technical gravel over that ways....then I might pootle over on the XT and not dash over on the SV
and that would occupy me for Saturday rather nicely:yes:
any suggestions appreciated

Thinking of heading to blackhead beach / Porangahu for a looksee next Saturday. Plan is to leave Havelock bout 10ish head to karaka, take gravel to Pourerere beach, ride beach to Aramoana, over the new slip 4wd to blackhead, gravel to Poranaghau short hop of tarmac to the pub for lunch or (shop for pie) then back the same way. maybe check out the northern end of Poranagahau beach if the access is open...was couple weeks ago. should be home 4ish. Low tide should be round mid day so perfect timing. Wont be hard out just crusie day in the saddle. If you are keen just post on here then will sort a meeting place

Hi Marty, I would be dead keen  but I'm off to Mahia with a group of friendz for a long weekend. We have a beach Wedding to attend. Could do the following weekend if that works for you ? DR200 in at Barry's as we speak having aggressive loan knobbly changed over, back wheel bearings done & brake fluid changed.
Prior to riding into Hastings I changed counter shaft sprocket over from dirt gearing, so when I got down the road & found the back wheel was 'sloppy' thought
. . . . sprocket . . . . check
. . . . snail chain adjusters correct. . . . . check
. . . . axel nut tightened . . . . check
. . . .split pin in so axel shouldn't move, even with a 'girl' tighten :lol::lol::lol:lol . . . . check
By the time I stopped for the 2nd time! (after a few corners getting more wobbly!) thought BACK TYRE?!!!
Yep the one crack on the side had turned into many & I limped into Barry's Motorcycles. My first ever puncture. Shame as loan tyre was in brill condition, you never seen such perfect knobs. Lost a perfectly good tube but did score a pretty good Bridgestone 65R MST from their throw out pile :2thumbsup. Taught well by XRJohnny.

Wheel bearing replacement due to the fact the 200 is used as a dirt bike as well as a Adv bike. Often not cleaned till the weekend after or worse !!! :brick: Then never taken for a ride immediately after cleaning as I should !!! The general pitfalls.
OK AXLE not axel

Thanks for the reply, could be a plan , damn weekends are loaded up for the next month at least, Ive got a couple of Ulysses rides booked in as well. Could meet you guys at the Patangata Pub if you are coming down Middle road or at Elsthorp if you are coming down Kahuraniki rd.
My F650 has got road tyres on it and gets a bit skittery on the loose stuff, The 81 KL250 I have is much more suited to the metal roads and its gets along about 90k quite happy on the road. Be interesting to compare it against DRGirls DR200.
Was going to do the cancer relay ride to Taupo on sat but the weather is going to stuff that up by the look of it.

Elsthorpe is the best spot, we'll most likely turn left at the Kahuraniki rd intersection and head off to Mangakuri rd. probably 20-30 mins from havelock so should be their round 10.30am. DR girl hoots along reasonably well on the 200 so you might not keep up at 90kph . The terain is pretty easy cept for the 4wd tracks across the slip and out to northern end of poranagahu beach. But we may not be able to get too far down there as the tides might be against us.....but will have some fun finding out :shifty:

So we don't leave anyone behind who wants to go post ya name here if ya wanna tag along:

Starting to think about a " Beach to the Ranges" ride down here, basicly, the morning will be east of SH2 and the arvo will be west of SH2
with lunch and refuel in Waipuk. It will consist of beach, as much shingle road as possible and the tar seal bits in between.
AM will be a big loop running along the coast then up and over the hills into the northern end of Tararua country and back around to Waipuk. A lot of hilly ,twisty shingle roads.
PM will be up in the ranges which will consist of some up and back on dead end roads but again, twisty hilly stuff and great scenery and some awesome views. Back home via Highway 50
Looking at mid April, poss Sat 21st or Sun 22nd, I thought doing it on the Sunday would be easier for the Sat workers.
I spose I should check the tides for that weekend.

Thanks for checking on the tides, Would prob need to be getting on to the beach at Porere about 9.30 am at the latest but I will need to try and work out a rough distance for the whole AM ride. may revise the times when I get a better idea as I dont think I will get the chance to pre ride the route.
Ok, just checked with google maps and the AM ride is looking like approx 200 kms from ELSTHORP and that is trying to allow for bends but its a rough estimation
at best so extra fuel being carried may be a good idea.

Just to bring this thread back to life, Still good for a ride down here on sat the 21st, as per the plan mentioned earlier, Beach, as many gravel roads as possable plus the sealed bits in between. Apart from a start time, it will be pretty flexable with plenty of stops.
The main ride will be east of Highway 50 starting at Elsthorp, Coast via roads and beaches down to Parongahou, over the hills and dipping into Tararua country then working back around into CHB again and eventualy ending up in Waipuk. After refueling the bikes and ourselves and depending on time then its off to the ranges to check out some of the gravel roads up there, starting in the Ashley Clinton area then working our way nth to Tikokino.
Most are dead ends in the ranges but very twisty and some awesome scenery.

Just went into Honda & the replacement LED tail light I ordered is on back order :cry::cry: May not get till the end of the month & then hope that will solve my LOL 'rear end' problems :pinch: In the mean time I'm not sure if a temporary trailer light will fit in narrow space allocated for my LED ??? So may be out for ride. :crybaby: I will keep you posted.

There has to be a way to sort out your "Rear end" so you can come on the ride. Has anyone out there in HB got an old tail light assy that can be fitted to the back of her bike in the mean time?
Cheers

Just to update you Ross, tried the local bike shops to see if they had my LED tail light in stock, but no luck. Even tried Super Cheap Auto but their LED's weren't suitable even with 25% off. :oi-grr:
Have John calling in sometime with his meter to check whether there is power going through to my rear end plug. Hopefully yes and all I am waiting for is my replacement LED. This time I will run a silicone bead around the tail light to stop all the crap getting in and corroding it. I'm suprised at the price I paid, that it wasn't already sealed or at least water proof! :brick:
Many thanks for your offer of help. Will keep you updated.

Yeah, it's through some farms. I think most of the tracks are lime based, so should be hard with plenty of traction (hard as in 'not muddy', not as in 'not easy', if you get my drift).

Saturday the 6th of October. The Ranges Roads Ride.
This is a ride Ive been thinking about for a while and its exploring the roads that run from Highway 50 up into the ranges starting from
Salsbury rd and going right down to Norsewood. Looking at covering at least 23 differant rds, some go well into the ranges with some steep twisty shingle to contend with. Awesome photo opotunities on some of these rds as they get right up into the foothills of the ranges.
Some we have to come right back to Highway 50 then along to the next one but there are a few that link accross to each other.
If its a fine day then the views will be awesome.
We wont be going up every single side rd as some are very short and not worth it plus there is a time factor.
Also on this ride there will be a stop for around 1 and a half hrs at a small farm, It is not bike related and it will require $20 per person but I can assure you it will be an interesting experiance, Two other bike clubs have been there and everyone loved it. Im not saying what it is, you will have to wait till we get there.
Lunch will at the Norsewood pub at whatever time we get there then its out through Ormandville and a mixture of seal and shingle country roads ending up back in Waipuk stopping at Daks for a couple before heading home.
I want to stress that this is designed to be a cruisy, scenic ride with photo stops as required.
Im very sure there is fuel at Norsewood but I will confirm that.

Here's a map. It's about 16km from the Tui Brewery. Sign posted all the way, so you just follow Makairo Road from the turn off south of the brewery.

Top ride guys, & thanks Wade for the assistance through the quagmire. Unfortunately Gus just didn't have the necessary ground clearance with those pipes.
After I left you guys I meandered my way home via Alfredton, Castlehill Rd, Castlepoint, Homewood Rd, Gladstone, Martinborough. Made it home about 7.30pm. Just on dark.
Really really need to improve my fitness. I was buggered by the end of the Makairo, & struggled with cramp for the whole of the rest of the day...

Amen to that Wade...o'll Night Falcon was pretty cream crakered after that we excursion, I couldn't get up on the pegs for very long so had to wrestle the 690 through most of the sticky bits. It was fun though and I managed to get through with no spills and no broken mirrors (unlike last time ) I was well impressed with Barts skills on the DR; how he got through with that skinny $10.00 rear tire was outstanding!

Its something on a small lifestyle block thats non bike related and its had a huge thumbs up from 2 other motorcycle clubs who have been there.
Ill leave it at that so you will have to wait and see.
There is snow on them thar hills at the mo so unless it gets some serious sun up there, we wont be too far from it on some of the roads up there so if there is a westerly wind then it could be a bit:cold:. There may a couple of non KBers joining us, another DR650 and a Transalp. I will try and get an idea of distance from Salsbury rd to Noreswood and post it before the weekend

Cheers Johny, be good to see you guys, Ive just done an estimate of the distance and trying to work it out using the scales on the map and allowing for all the bends its looking around 250 kms to Norsewood, possibly, and thats from the Salsbury rd intersection. Its only a guestimate at best so Im going have a fuel drop at the "Bit on the side" location for piece of mind. I know fuel wont be a prob for some of the bikes coming but it will be for any DR650,s on stock tanks and not sure about yours Johny. prob take 25 ltrs there so please, if you think you might need some, allow a couple of bucks a ltre. cheers for that.
Bit of a question mark on the weather but close to the ranges, it can be very unpredictable so allow for anything.

Better to get your knee sorted mate, easy to re run the ride for those that cant make it. Had a chat with the manager of Smedley Stn and asked him if we could ride through the Stn one day from the end of Smedley rd through to Makaroro Rd which the Stn bounds on to.
He dousnt have a prob with that so I said a couple of us would go through and check it out first and prob GPS plot a route through so I will touch base with you on that later in the summer and was thinking that we could combine a ride through the Stn and try and get access through some of the roads and tracks in Gwavas as well and that could turn into an awesome days ride.

Just an update on Smedley, When we got there yesterday on the ride, I caught up with one of the staff and he said that we could pretty much have the run of the whole stn and spend the day on it so hes more than happy to act as a tour guide for an initial 2 or 3 bikes to plot a cse through the property and he reckoned we could spend a whole day there easy. We would also get to see the proposed dam site on the Makaroro river that they are planning for this Multi million dollar irrigation scheme that the HB regional council are going for.
Be later on when its a bit dryer so I will keep in contact with you on that one Marty.
As usual with most things it was just a matter of asking.

Took approx 7 hrs which included the "Bit on the side" which went off with a "bang", was great to see a couple of Welly fullus join in for the ride. Hope you guys had a good day. I will be doing the ride again for all the people who couldn't make it so don't worry, Will be on the forum when a date gets sorted.
Re Smedley, will keep it at 3 bikes for the initial recce and course plotting around the stn and Ive been thinking (ouch) about how to turn that into weekend, overnighter ride, need to make some inquiries about another big area close by.

Thanks Ross for organizing a cool ride. Some of those back country roads are so SO much fun on a 650, that if the law knew, they would ban it.
The Bit on the Side was more than worth it. Too much to absorb in one visit, so i'll have to go back.
It never fails to amaze me , how much Prime Riding areas are just on our doorstep, & it looks like nobody knows. Let's keep it that way.
Getting a rear puncture ( while you guys were exploring another muddy track ) is always a guaranteed way of remembering an ADV ride.
One rusty 4" nail removed, new tube inserted & we were off again. Compulsory stop at the HB Classic Clubrooms ended a great day.
Getting another puncture riding home was not on my wish list, but after sitting down & eating my lunch that i hadn`t yet touched, i patched the tube in the rain & failing light, then carried on. :scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scoo ter::cool::cool:

Sounds good Wade, Always helps with that sort of contact.
No worries Robin, 4 will be fine, I told them that we would like to check the property out first and GPS plot a route around the stn but I dont want to make it look like we are exploiting them by bringing in a too many bikes on what is supposed to be just a recce.
Access is hard enough on private property so I want to keep this one squeaky clean. It certainly helped by me doing most of the road metalling on the last part of the access road to the property with the company that I work for which they have been very pleased with plus Wades involvement can only add to it.
What I am aiming for if it pans out is to also try and get access to Gwavas forest and do Smedley on a Sat and Gwavas on the Sunday and make it a weekender with a social get together on the Sat night. (Will see what the overnight rates are like at the Tiko Pub) This may not happen till next year but doing a recce in both and setting it up can happen over the next couple of months. Be good if we can get riders in from outside the bay for something like this. Something to think about anyway.

Cheers Paul, You have raised a very valid point and it needed raising, Photo stops on a ride. too often, rides are "destination" focused even if its just to the next intersection. I did say it was a scenic ride yet as the leader I kept going to the next planned stop so I will put my hand up and say I was guilty of not considering photos. Everyone has their own ideas on what constitutes a good photo for them so this needs to be managed somehow in a ride like this when someone suddenly is missing from the group you don't automatically assume they have had a close encounter of the worst kind with the surface of the planet or some immovable object that is on it.

I carry 1 19" LW tube for a spare stretch it for the 21" front and it will fit in your 18" rear.
As for a small pump you buy a cheappy from super cheap and pull it to bits and throw away all the plastic there is not much left.
You may have cover up the gear with a little tin cover.

Yeah, I take on board the suggestion about the double acting hand pump, the only power you need is in your own muscles and when your stranded on the side of the road, especially if you are out of the cell phone area then time is not an issue.
I still like the little electric pump that Harley Davidson are marketing though, may still see what they are worth here.

I've riden a few miles over the last 3 decades, and never had a flat on the trail. I find the secret is to run as higher pressure as you can. I often run 30psi front and back, and if you get to some slop, you can always let some out. Pinch flats are probably the most common, which are caused by not enough pressure for rocky terrain. As for nails/screws etc, you can't forsee shit like that.
What I'm getting at is you don't want to carry around all this gear that you may never use. In NZ you're never that far from civilization so you could probably ride the flat home anyway. If you run cheap crap tyres like I do, it costs bugger all to sacrafice them anyway.
In saying that, I carry all the tyre changing gear on long trips.

I have tried to ride a bike with a flat tyre which even had 2 rimlocks on the back and got about 9 kms ( at about 30KPH ) on a gravel road before the tyre started to come off the rim.
As a consequence i carry spare tubes and tyre changing gear with me even when i go for a short local blast. A 30 minute delay is better than a puncture ending your day.

I've riden a few miles over the last 3 decades, and never had a flat on the trail....
In saying that, I carry all the tyre changing gear on long trips.
I was almost afraid to admit Ive never had a flat or had to change a tire on the trail :baby: I salute you Bart for coming out the closet. There's no shame in never having had a flat :shifty:
Never had a pinch flat on the motorbike. I think I ride too slow.
Can't be anything to do with speed Nordie...Bart rides hard out and he aint had one, I've got average speeds covered and you've put ya hand up for slow
maybe its just an XR6, BMW, Kwaka thing? :dodge:

Flat tires not a BMW thing surely, never had one touch wood in 80,000kms on or off road. I think the thing with most flats is besides things like nails is the crap that makes its way between the tube and the tire. Any crap in there will rub a hole in the tube eventually the higher the pressure the less movement there is between the tube and the tire the lower the pressure then there is heaps of movement.
When you fit tires keep eveything as clean as possible and keep the crap out and if you can, some form of seal around the valve stem.
Back in the day I used to run 6 PSI in my Landcrusier tires all day in the mud and shit and dont recall to many flat tires.
Keep it clean.

Only ever had one flat on a 300 EXC a front compression puncture on standard tubes low pressure in the Welsh 2 day the hardest enduro i have ever done two days of flat out sections against the clock, since then always used HD tubes normal pressure nothing low and now carry standard tubes as spares. HD tubes are way to heavy-big-bulky to carry as spares.
Now i know the puncture gods are gonner punish me !!!
That looks like fun

Had one puncture in a bike tyre, the Beemer picked up a nail out back of Pio Pio  No worries mate I say to myself and get out the genuine, supplied with bike, puncture repair kit  It had some funny figure 8 sorta shaped things which had gone hard and brittle plus a tube of stuff that used to be glue in it :( Best of all the instructions (in tweve different languages) were written in font so small even those who didnt :tugger: go blind wouldnt be able to read them :weird:
So I scratched me head and looked around, noticed an old rusty bolt on the side of the road  Screwed it into the hole and blew the tyre up with a CO2 cannister. I then rode 5 kms down the road to a farm house to see if they had a puncture repair kit for tubeless tyres. :( No such luck unfortunatly). However I spotted some 3/8 rubber tube and a pottle of PVC glue in the barn and asked if I could have some  Cut the tube into lengths, coated them with the PVC glue then used them like dog turds :headbang: (a type of repair material for tubeless tyres).
Blew the tyre up and rode home (160 kms). Checked the pressure next day and it hadnt dropped at all
I love tubeless tyres

Ok peoples, 24th of Nov is a re run of the ranges road ride, hopefully will get the all the locals that missed out last time and anybody else who wants to tag along. took about 7 hrs last time which included the stop at the "Bit on the side" which consists of an amazing hunting museum, A working trebuchet, (easier to google it than try and explain) a collection of old weapons and a couple of black powder cannons (Which they fire), Cost for this is 20 bucks which gets donated to the Fred Hollows eye foundation (Bloody good cause) and we get morning tea with various goodies to nibble on.
Its a cruisy, scenic ride with photo stops. Its from the Salsbury rd intersection on Hwy 50 to the Norsewood pub and covers most of the roads west of hwy 50. Mixture of some sealed bits to twisty and hilly shingle roads, (can do without the bloody crosswinds that we got last time)
At one point we get to within a couple of kms of the Onga Onga village which has fuel plus there is fuel at Norsewood.
Allow for approx 250 kms from Salsbury rd to Norsewood.
Start time from Salsbury rd is 8am.

OK, Bit late notice but tomorrow is the Annual Birthright toy run, I will be with the HB Classic club and we are meeting the cnr of Plunket st and Maraekakaho rd at 10.30 in the morning. Ride is for about 1 hr and finishing at Anderson Park to hand the toys in and have a BBQ.
A tidy recycled toy is fine (must be suitable for kids).

Great turn out for the toy run, 220 bikes. Had people lining the streets waving and some handing out soft toys, Cops were blocking the traffic at some of the main intersections for the bikes. Nice BBQ at Anderson park for lunch and a pleasant afternoon back at the Classic Club rooms. Good day to be out on a bike.

Ive never struck shingle roads that were so skittery, normally the wheel tracks are well defined but it made for some interesting cornering. Great weather and a great bunch of people, thanks everyone for coming along.

I think I cleaned cup of dust out of my eyes when I got home even after having my visor down and wearing sunnies ! I might have to organise the next ride :shifty:
The video stuff is easy once you get the hang of it...If I can manage it anyone can! I was hacked off the video I took of the cannon disapeared for some reason so will have to see if someone else got some shots (mind the pun) of it. Wasn't it an awsome ride though!

Download one of the data recovery tools from somewhere like download.com Even if you deleted by mistake when viewing in-camera it's often still there untill you take more pics again, worth a try. Some of the memory card manufacturers often have free tools for this to download on their sites.

started from on the way home so all in all good timing...........
Wasnt enough to clean the jacket tho !

Talk about fly by wire stuff - couldnt see zip xcept the dust spewing from that
little DRs back wheel along Te Awa Rd - never mind the rest strung out somewhere
towards the front..............
