If any of you guys are out for a ride on Thursday (2 Oct) go have a look at the Ngaruroro as the Jetboat marathon (http://www.nzjbrra.co.nz/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=11&Itemid=51) is running 3 legs on there for the 1st time in a while. 100mph+ turbine engines, supercharged big blocks, absurdly large turbos etc. Give me mate Karl in B111 a wave.

Cheers

Cool vid Marty. Looked at a few viewing options on the map but didn't rememberise it was on till going over the bridge at Fernhill.
Was a few people there watching. Saw one boat headed up river but had to keep eye on the road.

Meanwhile it was a nice day at Akito beach via Pongoroa. Had fun on Little Manuhara rd 4wd track, not too challenging except for the slippery clay and wet grass but no drama.

Me and my brothers usd to race up and down the Little Manuhara on push bikes as kids. My father recently bought the land alongside the track. It used to be a lot more rutted but seems to be much better maintained these days.

Did you hit any of the hail and shit weather?

There was some work going on in paddock on northern side on first few hundred metres in, didn't really notice who was there though.
Weather was sweet, bit colder from Norsewood but that's normal, windy enough but not too bad.
Lots of scenic tree lined shaded roads down that way, will have to explore more.
Waihi falls was impressive, had spin on beach at Herbetville too.

Looks like council have been in with digger and groomed the Tutaekuri river crossing approach on Waldon/Mangatutu. About 10m3 moved and nice flat approach.
First section looked quite doable, water only about 2ft deep off to left but flowing fast, didn't fancy any unnecessary swimming lessons without back up :)
Explored Te Kowhai down to gorge stream, lots of sharp rocks. Hillbilly neighbourhood watch came down on XR200, said hello but didn't want a race back to the top for some reason :)
Waihou/Price/Hawkston roads all in good shape.

i crossed that river at waldon road one night, was anout the same as you said, 2 foot deep and a little too swift for my liking, made it over ok but went the long way home after that

Was all over the classic club page, along with the recovery pics. At 'Dairy flat" where ever that is on the long way to rissington rally.
Although the bigger pics looked a lot like the Makehu ford to me. Apparently the current washed out the front wheel.

Last minute decision to go for ride this morning, have ridden past Morere hot pools without stopping so many times that was main mission to check out. Cooled off nicely in the main cold pool.
Up the road took Tarewa road with the intent of cutting across back roads to tiniroto.
Early on there was a Road Closed Ahead sign, then this minor obstacle https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0NXe246IFdvYnAxcUJDZVZUOWs/view?usp=sharing

Or maybe they mean this potential launch pad, got over ok looks worse than it was (everything looks bad on roadbike) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0NXe246IFdva0tXZTFsaTYxNnM/view?usp=sharing

Then holy moley unsignposted film set from Dukes of Hazard!!! https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0NXe246IFdvUTBfWjU0WWJhdkE/view?usp=sharing

Was only going slow as ground quite soft there anyway. With several strong people and a rope you might get an adv bike past on the side/ditch/water table...

After doubling back had look up Gordon rd as far as farm gates on another potential through route then home via tiniroto.

Next mission think will stay night at Morere then do Tarndale and Motu explorations...

looks like a good ride, ive been through there..tawera road etc, itd be interesting to explore the linkups to tiniroto side..which could lead to a jaunt up te reinga etc.

i wemt for a ride with ross and wickle. me on xr250a (shakedown ride on latest trademe purchase) ross on dr and wickle (mark) on gs1000e took in gravel at mangakuri / claireinch roads, then long range etc to blackhead, then porangahau for lunch. not many bikes home via gravel and slabtop, rosco has vid footage :niceone:

What an awesome day for a ride, Who sez roadies cant do gravel, no worries for the big ole Suzy, narrow tyres and a rider that's been around on bikes longer than most of us meant we were only waiting about 2 min max at the end of the road and he was there looking for the next bit. Looks like he will be a starter for the back road ride around Wairoa on the 9th. Good on ya Mark.

Thank you so much for organising such an enjoyable day Ross & for putting on the most perfect weather. :sunny:
The lime green shades of the fresh country side was spectacular!
Lovely to visit Rob & Fran's farm again. A great lunch spot. Nice to met Alastair & Bruce & have John along also.

Leave it to you Ross,to give more details on those backs roads ;)

Also has a big tank, pumper carb, after market exhaust system and some other good bits. (deals like this should be illegal).

My advice mate....don't try too hard not to get one, they are two wheeled fun personified :banana::banana:

Thanks for the continued encouragement DRGirl; that banana moves a lot better than me at present- had my gall bladder removed last week so another op out of the way. Shoulder is getting looked at in December, MRI showed a tear in the cartilage so likely an op in the new year which will likely delay my return to the handlebars for a bit longer.....gives me longer to procrastinate on a new bike.

I see there is a NZ agent for Icon riding gear on TM. Pretty good gear by all accounts (not up to Klim standards I don't think?) so will have to check it out as still have to replace all mine. Would like to try it on for fit etc so might need a trip to the big smoke once I'm bit more mobile again - their adv helmets look pretty snazzy but don't know about the bubble visors for distortion; anyone tried em?

Got to explore some 'off-limits' areas in Kawekas yesterday as passenger in Logging truck. We had to wait at a gate for loading crew and asked about keys/access etc. Apparently they try to keep access to a minimum and even those who do have keys face a $1000 bill if they lose one. Fresh forestry tracks were pretty soft not sure they'd be too much fun on a big ADV bike, driver had the KW aired down to about 60psi, can drop it to 30.

You can mostly see the trucks coming by the dust cloud in the distance so u hide off the road then look on the truckers faces of WTF - the truck and trailer was more hairy as I didn't see it coming so we both had WTF moment :eek5:

No was only a one off on Monday for me, for next article job. You know they were probably thinking the same about you :)
Small farmlots (small private plantations) are making up quite a bit of the log harvest lately, you can expect the big gear up those roads at anytime these days. Keep an eye on the wheel tracks, you can usually see if big gear has been up the road recently (and therefore likely coming back).

When in Wairoa do not leave your helmet unattended on the beach.... No it didn't get stolen.......

Saw an older chap stuck in the mud with his 4wd by the river mouth by himself so went down to help... soon we had a few more helpers and a Terrano with tow line.
Right at the pivotal moment of success when we got it moving one of the helpers dogs pissed on my helmet, visor open..... #suckstobeme.....
One of those things that happens, lucky most of it stayed on the outside.... now undergoing full decontamination lol.....
Felt good to help someone out in trouble anyway :)

Todays mission was to explore Tarndale... ran into an old boss (one of the good ones) out of Gisborne so trip turned social and less exploring time though.
Funny as one of the local coppers turned up as I left and told him where I was going, "oh I wouldn't go there..." he says.... I'm still alive lol....

Didn't realise when taking these pics I could have ridden up this river bed to base of the slip but was getting late anyway.... Pretty good trip, Mount Arowhana looked impressive.
Motu mission for the next one I think... :)

Went for a tour around Mahia yesterday, Havnt been there for about 20 years, bloody holiday metropolis now. was in the company of a couple of road bikes so limited any serios exploring. Napier/Wairoa rd was starting to bleed on the corners on the way home. Stopped at the Waikare pub for a break (As you do) and one of the others asked if they should be riding through the shiny patches on the corners, wasn't sure what to say without offending them, so gritted my teeth and politely explained the probable result of leaning the bike over in wet tar. Good day for doing just under 600 kms anyway.

Yes Tar bleed is to be avoided but as long as your ready for the possibility of a slide and commit to it with keeping the gas on its no worse than riding in the rain. Thought it was lot better yesterday than it was couple weeks ago when the GSXR lit up in third coming off the 45k rise by mohaka twisties.... I didn't leave Gissy till about 630pm, great takeaway feed at Makaraka by the opotiki turnoff.

went for my first ride today in 15months :woohoo: couldn't help myself- only 2 laps of the cul-de-sac on the 530 but its a start, even had it in 2nd gear. Crossed the Motu rd off the list today. Awesome burger for lunch in Matawai at the Café then into it. Looks like lot of maintainance done recently and a digger bucket still parked on one of corners.
Road in pretty good condition, you'd even get through fine in a car. Twisty as, bit like going up to the hot pools here but with way more native bush, so much that they've massacared a fair few punga ferns that must have been encroaching onto the road too much. Ten mins on the bach at opotiki then home through the Waioeka gorge which is like a motorway compared to the last time I went through it about 12 years ago.

Judging by the scale of the work done I'd say it prob gets some choice 4WD ruts going on in the winter.... There were a couple of hefty near vertical step climbs that would be interesting in wet without momentum.

Waitara rd is a good one gravel after bout 10km or so take a rod some good spots to fish the Mohaka, then links up to pohukura rd to Tutira then darky spur rd back to napier normally a long day think it's nearly 300kms with a few fishing stops thrown in, tried to find the pylon service road off Ellis Wallace rd once but it seemed to disappear into scrub, next time I'm up that way will try from the darky spur road end but it will prob be next summer

Waipunga rd, Darky spur, kaiwaka rd is a good easy ride, just watch out for the locals and steep drop offs.

Waitara then past boundry stream to Tutira is good ride too.

about 300k range is ideal for decent poking round HB I reckon. When I had a 990 I always factored in a fuel stop on most of my rides, hardly ever for the 690 with safari tank, hoping the same for my safari tanked 530......if I ever get to ride it :(

+1 Road tires will get you moving along nicely enough, its the stopping on looser surfaces that can let you down...especially in a hurry. Go slow, also watch out for livestock and the recent influx of old men riding BMW R??'s :dodge:

Not that bad think it was $940 via mainfreight to fly it but I had to drop it crated to Auckland, even let me de-crate in Sydney depot and disposed of the metal crate FOC so thumbs up to them, (if anyone ever says send it Non dangerous goods tell them to get f***** as two shippers told me to which would have saved $300 but it's impossible to do with anything that has seen petrol through it which gave me the run around for several weeks before shipping) as they are accredited to OZ bio they went to the depot and cleared which was another couple hundred instead of $500 looks like being similar Perth Auckland by boat as long as shipper is to his word which doesn't always happen from what I read, then there's the Carnet $565 think that was. Flights, spendy, soon adds up but it was a once in a lifetime trip.

DR never missed a beat, no punctures, only thing was rear muffler came loose from the 150 odd kms of corrugated road into Finke which is aftermarket anyway and the number plate cracked and the end part fell off.

That's not too bad for airfreight of such large item. Agree with what you say about DG's, people might get away with that on road transport with something that is apart of the motive power of the vehicle (eg a motorbike with lead acid battery installed can still travel with foodstuffs but take that battery out and send it by itself and its Class 8 corrosive pain in the arse. Any container that has held DG's is still hazardous until officially cleaned and certified. Plastic containers of any kind are the worst even if designed for it. They are all slightly pourous and always retain 3% of whatever was in there before hand, except of course if you've run out of fuel in middle of nowhere lol....
Those cheaper shippers would have given you a right hospital pass and possibly landed you with fines for non declaration of DG's etc.... you wouldn't want the bill for a plane being unloaded because someone smelt petrol halfway through loading up....
Hazardous rant over lol, its a pet peeve of mine, dealt with too many muppets out there who are lazy with the paperwork and want you to hide stuff in toolboxes on trailers. They suddenly go quiet when you ask if they want to pay their share of the potential fines...

Cheers, a little rusty but will get there. The 530 has exceeded expectations (even in adventure clothes), it is way different to the 690. Handling is easier in tighter terrain (as you might expect) with tighter steering, torque is exceptional on both bikes but the 530 is more responsive than the 690 (on standard map setting). 530 didn't feel as planted on the gravel but expect that's down to the exc's shorter wheel base & lighter weight...... and cos I haven't riding for 19 odd months :innocent:

Heres some shots of the 530 twins :shifty:

Hi Robyn yes great time didn't take rod as had tooo much shit as it was, thought I had it packed light but decided along the way to ditch stuff and still kept stuff I could have easily have done without, on the road you really don't need much. Wildlife was the biggest surprise so many things want to jump in front of you, had an emu just appear along side me at about 50 Kmh then darted back in the bush shit the bejesus out of me. Dead Roos on the road have a very distinctive pungent smell from a few hundred meters away, saw probably 100 of them one morning early all just watching waiting to jump. 313238313239

Ayers Rock was impressive better than the Olgas I thought as you could pretty much ride right round it the Olgas you have to tramp through them which would have been good but add at least another day or two. Kings Canyon I did a hike around which was another must see, the other pic is the Pinnacles a diferent park in WA that you drive around a desert rock filled landscape for 8km or so (wouldn't do that in Europe)

The kept and discarded gear list would be very interesting.
Reminds me of the list you get given for winter camps of stuff that you NEED, must have etc... I recall after the fifth winter trip into Kawekas in Cadet forces I'd eliminated about 75% of stuff but still able to safely survive if needed.
Same now when I go away, try to be minimalist but sometimes not see pic lol....

Yep passed a few going the other way were you part of the 200 bike group ? Saw a few come through when I was camped at the Finke end, I had planned to do the service road but it didn't open till late so went back out to Kulgera. I did Sydney to Byron via Bathurst and in land route Then across to Dongara on the west coast, missed some of the middle due the rain that passed through and closed all the roads. Did you ride with a broken collar bone ? And yes one big mother of a country stretches of several hundred Kms of nothing and seeing nobody which I would not want to be out in summer time.

Nice photoshop - Larry lamb would b nothing compared to hitting a live or dead 6 foot 200 pound roo, I travelled in the middle of the road to give me a slightly better chance if something darted out from the left, nearly hit an emu, couple of Roos hopped across 50 yds ahead of me, then a herd of camels and a dingo played chicken on the Great central road.

You get told don't travel at night shit it was bad enough in the day !!

Talking to a grey nomad one night and he hit an emu in his 4x4 which caused $20,000 worth of damage and the head slammed into the bonnet which had to b changed, he thought we are all nuts riding bikes in OZ.

You tuff bugger riding on with those injuries, always wondered what people were expected to do if they didnt keep in front of the sweep and were technically out, "oh ill just go home then" of course your going to keep going with or without the support. I camped south of the Finke river with a bunch of ozzies and watched you all come in some going down the track to the left rather than down the service road, Toby Price and top five in a league of their own amazing to watch.

On the service road out to Finke , which runs next to the actual track, 100's of vehicles were trying to get to the other end and along the track to watch the race. I had a nice little spot in the cue behind a hilux just behind his dust but he waved us forward to go past him and as I came thru his dust the front wheel went into some bulldust(talcum powder) with a rock reef under it and snapped left in the rut violently and over I went then she came and hammered me into the ground and thats when I heard everything breaking. 35L of fuel in tank,15L in bladder on rear and 10L of water and 4 days of food, the bike was pretty loaded and felt great as it squished me lol, got out from under it and picked it up myself tho (god the pain was intense).
Recovering well, Ill be back over there to finish it off.

Thanks Robyn. Have had the carb out 4 times in the last week trying to sort a backfiring problem but think I've sorted it now with a new pilot jet. The ride on Saturday will do it the world of good after laying around for a year. I'm a bit like a kid waiting for Xmas day - keep going over the bike, charging the gopro, oiling the chain, cleaning the air filter, checking my gear, fitted my wolfman tank bag (not that I need it). Be glad to get this ride out of the way.

Cool stuff guys, forgot to ask Marty, how does the 530 feel size and weight wise compared to 690?

530= taller, skinnier, lot lighter (especially the front), quicker turning. Basically the 690 was a lot more planted on the road/gravel - you don't notice strong cross winds nearly as much on a 690 plus it has the power and gearing to handle them betterer. 530 is definitely a plated enduro but that's kinda it's charm. Great for riding round the Bay but I wont be goin much further on it less it's on a trailer

This thread has been toooo quiet. Is anyone out there still riding?

Wade and me went for a 7am low tide assault on Ocean beach this morning to see if we could get to Renieka, but the swell was too big....about dozen surfers there early gave it away. It was low enough to ride around to Waimarama beach though. Riding over the rocks was interesting as they were pretty slimy but no bones, bikes, or ego's were hurt. An excellent way to start a weekend in The Bay!

Hope not too many of yas were hit with the current :puke: problem.....looks like there were some advantages for Sue & I to temporarily move to Hastings.

Bit of a ride round the block with a few characters today. Just did the Pohukura-Minginui-Waikaremoana-Erepeti-Tiniroto leg then back to the bay again.
Some rain, LOTS of slushy mud and Deadfall trees but a magical ride through some beautiful countryside as always. Then even had hot pies at the lake!
Some nasty rain ruts just before Minginui but otherwise road in good shape. Logging operations at Pohokura end so expect the road to get roughed up a bit.

I wondered how you blokes got on.

I REALLY wanted to get across for this, but work wasn't keen on giving additional leave just now.

The rain was good, just enough to keep the dust and sunstriek away that normally plague the first section. Was a very warm 12 deg or so...

The're all cute til you get too close, then you suddenly realise why our ancestors had no qualms about making raincoats and hubcap covers out of them.... quite common around the bay now (seeing seals not clubbing them), especially up Waipatiki rocks walk or Kairakau.

I'm in Napier and with it warming up and daylight savings time again I'm looking to get into a bit of biking when family and work allow. None of my mates have anything road legal so Just looking for some locals to go for a ride with and see some of the sights possible on big dirt bikes.

I want something with some zip to it, meaning it puts a smile on my face every time I ride it:msn-wink:

But, I now want something that is comfy on the road too.... The KLR met the latter of the remarks, not the first!

Lol no, actually spend very little time on fixing it. Most of the maintenance and fixing dramas have been caused by bad diagnosis/jumping in with both feet and adding farkles. And remember it is 25 years old.

Made a last minute decision to day trip up east Cape to the lighthouse yesterday. Was planning on camping at various stages but weather hasn't been looking tent friendly.
Needed a ride so about 804km of pure adventure in one day :)
Some parts of main highway north of Tokomaru are still truly shocking but nearly all are signposted with roadworks signs, paint or cones.
Was very windy, nearly end the ride windy and bit wet near Ruatoria on way up but other wise good trip.
