Good to hear that you are getting better Marty, sounds like still a lot of pain but being well enough to type on here and with a sense of humour is a big step forwards.
Hell awhile back just bruising my lower ribs when I tripped up on cracked pathway was bad enough for me, let alone breaking them!
Sounds like the rest of you had a great trip on the farm.
Mate had spare weekend so ended up staying at Omori, did Upper Tama lakes on Saturday then early shuttle on Sunday to Tongariro crossing along with Summiting Ngauruhoe for first time.
Shortly after taking this photo I took a good tumble on a rocky slope and nearly joined Marty!

Caught up with Marty yesterday afternoon. Ribs very painful but chirpy & typical Marty. . . . . & best thing . . . his Adv riding days are NOT being put to rest :Punk:
He had punctured his left lung. But with the mess his ribs are in on the left hand side that's not surprising!!!! He said they were very worried about his head as he didn't recognise his family for 4 days! Still can't remember anything since Ypuk. The Ambo driver visited him in his ward said he had told him he was fine & would ride back to Havelock :msn-wink:

Was great to catch up with you Marty. So pleased you haven't lost an ounce of your humour & will be out in time (on a new bike) with the KBers again :soon::wings:

Cheers Mark. The poor lamb exploded on final impact (apparently) so there wasn't even enough left for dog tucker. I have the owners details so expect they will be hearing from my insurance company once I get round to making a claim. I still haven't been able to bring myself to look at the 690 or what's left of my riding gear but may be the weekends job. Finding it a bit easier to move around but my left side is real sore and has now turned a nice dark yellow colour. I guess I'll never know for sure what exactly happened but I have ruled out excessive speed (and so did the serious crash unit) so maybe just the wrong place at the wrong time. What guts me is the ride with the Welly lads was awesome so this was a stink ending to a fantastic days adventuring

Give me 8-12 weeks and I might be able to join yas:laugh: would have to be better weather than last time though, riding up there In almost zero viz is tad hard wrk .......fun,but hard,

For an update on my progress I'm getting better at pain management but it's hard work. Don't recall my busted leg giving me as much grief as these ribs. Will make contact with insurance company tomorrow and. Get the. Ball rolling on that. There's probably $2k of visible damage I recon but what worries me is the frame, engine and computers health after taking a fairly hard impact. Will be interesting to see what the insurers recommend.

The track goes on for about 3 or 4 km to a dead end. Gets a little rough past the hut but then improves a bit. No side tracks that I’m aware of, so you can’t really fill a whole day in there.

You can rest a leg, but you can’t rest ribs...unless you stop your heart and lungs....and apparently that’s bad (I was going to say ’baaaad’, but it’s probably a little early for sheep jokes).

Not that I can recall it but Getting on and off a sheep whilst already on a ktm is not an experience I would be looking to replicate although it might have been less troublesome on something more like old mutton and with less ground clearance like a KLR but hey that's only speculation on my part :corn:

spoke to AFC motorcycles today about the extent of damage and estimated cost to repair the 690 and lets say I'm not holding my breath there is enough $$$ in the insurance to restore it to her former glory. Will be a real shame if it gets written off but rather it than me I spose. Body is feeling better today but ribs still no fun. Will see bout physio next week as I want to see if I can get my left arm moving as soon as possible - Ive had a frozen shoulder before and don't want another one. When I had a bit of a sheep incident a while back the awesomeness of KTM suspension actually enabled me to ride over a fairly sizeable lamb. Unfortunately the little bastard's mum was right behind it & the 640 didn't quite have the reserves of awesome to deal with that as well :bye: It was however fixed up to ride another day, unlike both the sheep. Best of luck with the ribs & the bike Marty.

Thanks Clint. I'm just sooooo frustrated at not being able to recall how it happened but as it happens I think the 690 didn't stand much of a chance as I have concluded the woolly offender took out the front wheel as I was leaning into a gradual left hander at probably 100-110 kph slamming the left side of the bike into the deck which explains why most of my left side is so broken. Then the bike has slid 25-30m with larry the lambro wedged between the front tire and the exhaust header, finally catching on something and flipping us all into the air and landing a further 15-20m up the road with me under the bike which is how I was found.

Don't ya know it:devil2: But Alas the go pro is now a no go pro. It took the full brunt of the impact with the road so is a tad banged up. The SD card is missing from it as is most of the plastic housing, know one can tell me if the SD card was removed during or post crash.....maybe the old bill have it and are watching footage of the Welly lads riding through fog up whatever road we were exploring earlier in the day....hopefully there wasn't any wheel standing or other incriminating evidence on it (actually I think there was :pinch:) anyway it's prolly more interesting viewing for the secrete service than the stuff they got from kimdotcoms place. Hi Guys, Feeling better but still pretty sore despite the copious quantities of pain killers I'm shovelling down. Had my first session with a physio today which went really well, there's a lot to work on but we will get there!

I have the insurance assessor coming round tomorrow for a chat so will know more on the 690's fate after that. I have requested AFC In Palmy do a full survey of the bike to make sure everything is ok frame, engine and computer wise so if that all checks out hopefully she will live again....will just have to wait and see though.

Just been catching up on this thread, as I saw something about 'hope you are well' and clearly there has been a run with the 690 and a woolly creature...sheesh, not good buddy....

I'm just getting back into the bike, and even had the last of the steel out the leg, so technically I am all human again...so hearing that stupid animals can still get ya...gives me the heeby jeebys. Speaking of that, I went out for a careful ride over the wairapara and went past some oncoming stock...the f'n stupid cows decided at the last minute to bolt from one side of the road to the other. Shit...I had already slowed down, and was as far away as a nervous rider would expect yet they hunted me down...honestly, it was all reaction on my part and I managed to gas it, into between two of them...bloody close and it was my practically my real outing....really shook me... !@#$ bastard food groups!

Hi mate, Glad to hear your recovery is going well. I was pretty lucky as it turns out - could have been a lot worse. Have had to deal with comments like "have you learned your lesson yet", Motorcyclists are temporary citizens (isn't everyone?) from some folks but have only received support and encouragement from my wife and family which has been awesome.

You can never predict how livestock will react on roads and in a surprise situation odds are not in your favour and the bigger they are the harder you fall.

Take care Veg

For sure on the worse thing...but think also how many you have got away with...plus we're old(ish) and all have lot's of kays on our personal clocks. Life is about getting as much in as you can, and then dying with a worn out, high mileage body...there is no trade in or special deal for arriving at the pearly gates with low mileage!!!

yeah...I hear ya on that, I get annoyed about the bike/risk/danger issue...but honestly, with the 2 weeks I had in hospital and seeing a range of injuries, most of the things were related to just being alive...so the fact that we get hurt doing something adventurous and exiting is actually ok. People get hurt playing rugby, "but thats ok."..but on bikes "oh that's silly" - they can go get fucked.. For instance, There was one guy across from me, who tore both knee caps off as he fell downstairs while trying to get cellphone coverage...at least I was 'living'...

I haven't read what damage you have done to you and bike...whats the tally?

Night Falcon

smashed 9 ribs, punctured lung, concussion, broken collar bone and shoulder blade, bruising everywhere.

All my riding gear is toast including my Tech 10's, helmet, gopro, jacket, pants, camelback & Gloves.

the insurance assessor came by this morning and was really great to deal with so my next assignment is pricing replacement gear. The bike has limited damage, busted indicators, lot of road scratching/gouges all over, smashed one end of the bars but the real concern is the front end looks like it may have been bent in which case it will most likely be written off. Will be getting confirmation latter today or tomorrow on sending it to AFC for repair costs which are likely to be significant either way.

We should do a group trip and stay at the pub and explore about sometime. Met some ladies there who were headed to the music festival 20km up the road at Tahora also, they said that farmer has bike rallies there too so may have to look into that. Think most of the interesting side tracks are at NPLY end. Must be some 'Westie' ADV riders on here that can advise us... :)

There are quite a few good tracks over that way. We’ll sort something out in a month or two. Camping could be the go.

Thanks guys, I meant to GPS it on the phone but having too much fun. Explored just about every nook and cranny that looked like a legitmate 4WD track into bush...
A short way in there is a gravel siding to the left where there's enough space for a small bus to turn around perhaps, anyway from there is a 2km ish track leading up to a quarry on an exposed dip in ridgeline with some neat views to Taupo. Back on main track about 3/4 of way in is a larger camping area where several familys were setup, found a muddy 4WD track that followed for about 50m before a tricky section appeared with sawn logs parked in it...
Overall the road/track seems to be maintained to very hi standard, you could get in there in a roadbike no worries.

I was with eddie, the day we found the wall, it is actually a few kms back, right hand side if heading to SHWY 5.
Basically we parked the bikes and walked into the bush, the wall was about 50 metres back off the road in plain view. It just looks like a rock wall until you get closer.
I know it was a bit of going up and down the road looking left and right, but it was eventually found. If you get to the end of the road, you have gone too far.

at the 'rabbit patch' where the biggest camp area is you can navigate north/norwest into the lake taupo forestry pines which has a ton of gravel roads......BUT its not public so beware the local iwi.
the track up to the quarry used to be fun as it was major washed out with huge ruts all the way up, great fun on the trail bike, but that gets cleaaned up every now and then so i dont no what its like now

Interesting if you are going downhill, with a tailwind, looking for maximum fuel economy...I'd cry if I had to ride that a long way...actually I'd cry if I had to ride it all...

So well have to keep an eye on Turners Damaged auctions for a mint KTM motor then, wonder if fit in a DR frame...

I'd say look at anything lightweight, your injuries will prob still make themselves felt for a long time so you'll want something that's super easy to move about and handle.
That narrows down the options a lot to start with.

Greetings to everyone.

I'm bored sitting at home at the moment so thought I'd post up an update on things. Progress on my recovery has been a bit frustratingly slow. Still having shoulder problems and going for a second cortisone injection soon. The concussion has been my biggest challenge though and have been ordered to stay home this week by my GP in order to rest my brain....shouldn't be too hard as there's not much there to tire it out.

Have been looking at bike options but cant decide what direction to go in. I'm thinking about an EXC 500 (there's a nice 2013 6days on TM at the moment) or whether to leave ADV/road riding altogether (as I don't think my poor old noggin will handle another major knock) and get something more sedate like a 350 or better still a 250 feeride and just do light woods stuff. I started the Rev3 on Sunday and rode it gently round the cul-de-sac (only one small wheelie) and cant wait to get out on it again.

Whatever I decide there will be a bike of some description in my future and hopefully not too much longer before I can venture out; autumn riding in The Bay is an exceptional time of year.

Cheers
Marty

Hey Marty,
Yup..I feel your anguish and decision processing that must be going on....not only the injury and hassles but also the tacit pressure placed upon you from family and friends about evil motorcycles.

As you know, It's been nearly two years since I destroyed my knee and I'm still regaining strength but on the flip side, I rode the DB1k and for me it was a real sense of acheivement. The ride was probably harder and longer than I had expected but I coped and any concern with knee and worry certainly had to go once on the awakino saddle.

I did ride well and the only mistake was dropping it in one of the rivers (stupid rock) and my weak leg couldn't prevent the 690 from taking a wee bath. After the whole event, I still like the 690 and now want to go with the evo kits to make it more rally. I to, was thinking smaller, lighter slower...but wait to the healings done, as the body lets you know what you really will be capable of.

Perhaps get all of them...that solves the issue :-D

From there headed out on the Pohokura Rd to Lake Tutira and sprint home as it was dark by then and i left at 9am.

Will have to check out that J Sutton rd, haven't taken that one yet. Did realise you could get that far north along Pohukura from that junction. Yeah they were logging hard out up that Te Hoe block when I was up there while back, lots of signs saying no access etc. From SH2 you can get to the other end of it from Willowflat, nice ride, then along Mokonui rd a little way before it says private, te hoe station.
Any trouble with bees? Caught three swarms up around that Pohokura/Waitara junction last time...

pomgolian

Yeah Te Hoe river is part of fish and game access so you should be able to get to it but have to ask first, looks like you can ride through the river and carry on for a bit think it said only cross with caution, no bees but lots of wasps on the river bank seems most nests didn't die off as we had a mild winter last so we have double this year.

Oh and jock Sutton isn't long but nice down hill down to the river a km or two to where the Waipunga meets the Mohaka, was a bit surprised how much gravel and how nice it is SH5 to tutira

Hi Paul, glad to see your out and about we've had some awesome riding weather lately :crybaby:

Unfortunately my progress has got a bit stuck, my broken shoulder is still playing up - surgery is looking likely, plus the concussion is proving a tad challenging to get through. Greetings. I'm a bit bored today so in the interests of forensics, dug out my GPS file of the fateful day. After some keen analysis of the track file I deduced the following findings::sherlock:

the bike was averaging 112kph when the speed suddenly dropped to 26kph for 36meters, 19kph for 15m then various drops over a further 10m to 0kph where it remained stationary for some time .

I theorise that the reason for the recorded speed reduction can largely be explained by the high number of fractures to the left torso of the unfortunate rider

The picture below shows where half of the sheep came to rest which was some 30m back from the final resting spot of the other half of the sheep, the bike, and the unfortunate rider which proves the point that hitting livestock on your motorcycle can be a real drag.

as you were

Only one quote back so far strangely only $700 NZD sea freight Auckland to Sydney then Perth to Auckland - then add in all the other charges and it's ends up $ 2400 NZD round trip by sea, port charges, MAF, export charge, customs & the list goes on. He reckoned better sea freight as air would be over 6k and hiring a bike seems dearer than the sea freight. Plus that's the cost now not this time next year but flights are cheapest 12 months out.

Yeah I think that still looks straight... Crash tested various bits on the DR after an argument with some nasty greasy stepped rock slabs at beach.
Don't remember riding over same bit other times so storm must have washed away the sand maybe.
Anyway the case armour did its thing along with the bashplate and brake lever now sporting new custom designs. The zeta BBs rotated a bit but still intact.
Engine seemed quite happy to run upside down but hit kill switch pretty fast.
Got bike upright ok but after the crash ended up in a rut like rock formation, used side stand to pivot bike around but getting moving again wasn't easy on slippery surface.
BTW there's a few 'mud challenge' sections on the gravel link from Kairakau which are a slight surprise when rest of road fast and well swept.

I probably endanger myself more in mountain bike park... managed to bruise or strain the tendons on top of foot just enough to be annoying.

Friend reckons the pub at Pongaroa is pretty good, might have to do a longer ride exploring down that way soon.

Bit soft on the river bed after all the heavy rain. Just after I took this shot a couple of French tourists with kayak on top of hiace van tried to drive down too...
No wonder they bungled the rainbow warrior op... actually they were quite on to it as far as getting out, the lady driver very smooth on the gas, still had to give them a little push.

Just a reminder guys and gals Next Sunday is the Meeanee swap meet, went there 2 years ago and there was a huuuuge selection of old cars there plus a big turnout of bikes on display, and, on the weekend of the 5th and 6th of July, at the HB Show grounds is the "Evolution of the Motorcycle " Show, put on by the HB Classic Club. ALL types of bikes will be on display, from the late 1800s to present day. Trying to get together a selection of Trail/Adv bikes for the show so if you have anything that is complete, doesn't have to be in flash condition, let me know and I can liase with the organizers. Marty, would like to see your Beta there if that's ok. Robyn, your DR200 and the XR200 please. Wade, Your KTM and KLR Please, My DR650 will be set up for camping at this stage. Its going to depend on the amount of room that's available in the end. Will be in contact with everyone closer to the time.

Well I can see how that fella in the other thread crashed, there are lots of random soft patches getting up the Tukino 4WD access track.
Got up no worries, track in good nick just care required. Both mountains looking stunning. Shooting into light so photo not the best trying to expose for bike and snow at same time.
Gate locked just past cell towers, could see bike tracks going around it but DOC ute parked nearby so behaved myself. Plus even walking off the track the ground is soft enough.
For the trout fishers the Moawhango river was super clear and saw few trout swimming past :)

Another stunning riding day in the bay yesterday - managed to get past crocodile lake and over Te Kooti's bridge (i didn't know it was called that but lots of history google tells me) as they left the gate open but the amount of warning signs on the other side about access without permission being a NO GO coupled with big logging trucks coming down the switch backs i turned around. Caught a big brown trout at 6.4 lbs :woohoo: and a couple of rainbows.

Allot of logging going on so the odd truck to keep you alert on blind bends on the way home :shit:, then along Darky's Spur rd with great views of the hills then Napier in the setting sun to finish off the day.

Need to watch out in some of that country up there Raymond, The locals refused to sign the Treaty.

So your saying I should take more than a couple of bags of flour to negotiate tricky situations???

Seriously though I've never had a problem (touchwood) in whatever backwater neighbourhood I've been in.
From fish and chips at the Wairoa rivermouth to delivering truckloads of alcohol by myself to bottle stores around Otara, Wymondley and Mangare. Or walking the streets of a few dodgy areas like Peckham and Birmingham in UK to get lunch from the corner dairy where everyone was convinced I'd never be seen again. I did have second thoughts when I saw every second house had its windows boarded up!
I think its all about how you interact with people in those first moments.

BTW googled the name on gate, Mangataniwha. Seems to be an interesting place that may have gone out of business, no webpage anymore. One of NZ's largest privately owned tracts of native bush with not all species fully surveyed.
Could be an interesting place to camp and have a nosey about if someone could get us access...

All good lol, Hell of a lot of country in there, The only time you are likely to piss the locals off is during the Roar. Prob best to contact the forest managers for the area and they will probably be happy to discuss access with you and at least you will know where their boundaries are. looking at a Topo 50 map of the area and its looks a giant spiders web of roads and tracks.

Yes. Go back a bit in this thread you'll see my pics. You want to go when it's a proper 0.0m low tide, at a 0.3 low tide it's quite a difference and you'll have to ride the soft wet stuff and waves lol... The area is under DOC control so take it easy so we still allowed access.

Three of us rode from Haumoana along the Beach a couple of years ago but that did mean crossing where the Maraetotara river comes out on the beach which wasnt bad (river mouth has no doubt moved so not sure what its like now), but you could join the beach at the Clifton Cafe where the tractors enter best avoid the campground & boat ramp area further on to save winding up the members as there are enough local hoons on dirt bikes & three wheeler quads doing that.

Small jaunt? sounds like a reasonable ride. Will give Boundry stream road a miss for awhile then, last year the rally cars carved it up pretty good.
Heated gloves are great, even if everyone likes to joke about them. Only trouble is you notice the next most coldest parts of riding gear more.

Don't know if any of you guys are familiar with Lyndon Poskit's (Pyn) biking adventures? He has an impressive list of races including finishing Dakar and builds most of his own bikes. He is currently doing a solo world tour www.racestoplaces.com and is coming to NZ. I'm not sure (and neither is he yet) if he's coming to the Bay but if he does is keen to meet some local adventure riders.

He's a top guy and an awesome rider and is riding his fully sorted 690 which is super impressive. Anywho just fishing for interest at this stage, as it may not happen, but anyone interested in catching up with Pyn for an evening if we can swing it? I had the same thing when I was on a morphine drip - every time I tried to sleep I would start to shake and the room would start spinning. Always wondered why the nurses didn't notice the building revolving but I guess they're used to it?

Howdy.

Expect it will be latter in the year before he gets here. This is a link to his racing site. http://www.lyndonposkittracing.com

Awhile ago when I was up Kaweka rd some DOC volunteers made me a coffee, chatted over a few things including the road closed sign that goes up in Winter at times as I'd got up there ok one day when I ahem didn't see the sign...
Anyway no road closed sign today, but they were right, you can't get up there when its icey!!!
Made it past couple utes that were stuck, prob wasn't too far from the helipad lookout when the dodgy small patches of ice morphed into holy hell the entire road is a skating rink of hard packed ice.
Completely lost traction, couldn't even get off the bike, had to ski slowly backwards into the berm and formulate a plan from there...
Walking about taking some photos and just about impossible to stand. Getting back down the hill was just as much fun as getting up there.

Oh well a good pre-MMMMM shakedown ride to see everythings in order after some changes to the bike :)

Down at sea level today it was a bit more tropical at the furthest point you can ride to around cape kidnappers (unless your rock hopping) rode from Haumoana across the Maraetotara river outlet which is a doddle at low tide. Some big rock falls half way round the size of cars that keep you alert of the time for your return trip that weren't there last time or your gonner get wet.

Yep gloves great, already tested over taihape road while back too. they are pretty warm on there own and going slow on way down fine with them switched off.
Only prob is you start noticing the next weak point in your gear for coldness...
Left home about 9.30 am so prob about 2 degress all way in, was plenty warm with two layers of wool, denim shirt and merino scarf.

You wont have any problems with tailgaters and that fishing rod Pom :) Must dust off my surfcasters...

Howdy Bubble. There are 1/2 dozen or so of us in the Bay that link up for day rides. Now that Spring is here there will likely be a bit more activity and rides are usually posted on here. I'm not riding at the moment but hopefully not for too much longer and am always keen for a ride. I live in Havelock so would be great to catch up some time.

Hi Bubble

As Marty said there's a few that get around the place, not sure we are that organised to meet up regularly due to work & family and people going out at different days of the week, i tend to slide out on the bike for a fish or blast for a few hours at short notice.

Be nice to be a bit more organised so i was thinking with the age of smart phones why don't we all have share email addresses and if your going for a blast flick out the group email with rough time & route, then if anyone is off and interested they could mail back.

What u rekon KTM crasher ?

Hi Night Falcon, spring is definitely here, a cold commute to Napier on a frosty morning. The camera hasn't seen daylight for a while but is a great hobby.
