Huummmm Interesting.
now that the GPR DYNO is up and running it was time to test the GPR100 (TZR).
At minefield the other weekend it was noticeable that the power dropped off during the mid range.
However none of us expected it to be as interesting as this.
Some work to do.....
Dyno plot is 6000 - 12000

The ignition curve and servo opening are attached.
So we leaned it off by dropping the needle (which slightly improved things); but me thinks ignition and servo adjustments may be required.
Specs:
TZR100, 95-RS125 pipe, Exhaust duration = 198, Inlets = 123, comp 13.2:1, crankcase volume ratio 1.55.

Hey that's actually some pretty respectable power, but yes I expect the PV opening time might be juggled to lose some of that drop. Certainly felt like it revved pretty low when I rode it. I wonder if the ign is dropping off too steep suppressing the revs. An inch out of the pipe may be a good idea, maybe a couple, those Yam cranks should be good for a peak power increase of 1000rpm or more.
Pretty rounded transfers as an observation.
Edit, sorry do yuo mean the transfers are 123 deg? That's 37.5 deg blowdown which is huge. I'd raise those for certain.

I think he does........
You can't fault your consistency Dave
why does it look like left & right front transfers are different sizes?
Transfers seem quite low. hmm, 38 deg blowdown is quite excessive, that will be quite peaky despite a tame ex port height. I'd be aiming for say 34.

Only brent can answer when he started but i guess it was about 5years ago??????????????
Hi all.
I been slowly building up a new F4 100cc two stroke bucket motor (first new motor in at lease 10 years) and I've got a few questions regarding:
1. Sparkplugs, Standard spark-plug (NGK B9EGV or NDw29ES*) thread lengths are normally 3/4" long, has anyone found a 14mm pitch racing plug that is in the same heat range (~NGK 9-10) that has a longer thread (lets say ~22mm, I recall something about tz125s & rotaxs kart motors having longer threaded plugs, so temp sensors could be installed)?
(reason: I'm figuring out the best way to profile my head). I've download the NGK catalogue but can't seem to find anything useful.
2. Carbs, Do early RGV (1988-90ish) require vacuum pressure or pressurised air-box to work correctly? (reason, I've got a box of carbs but the RGV fits the best).
Was planning on sleeving it down to 30mm. any help on these carbs would be great (I've spend hours looking/googling for information on these to no avail, so its time to ask).
3. Rubber engine mounts, I've done a little bit of work to mount the engine directly to the swingarm pivot, so now I just need to make some new rubber bushes. This is not looking like an off the shelve solution, so I'm going to need to make something up. I was thinking about some rubber hose with a steal insert (which the swingarm bolt go's through); but I'm not sure if hose will be dense enough or even be suitable. any thoughts ??
cheers in advance.

You should read the date on the post..
cheeky bugger.
Nope, the engine arrived from long term storage in ~Jan (but the plan had been worked through for a little longer than that).
Easter 2010 saw the final demise of the mighty TF100 (at that stage ~18 years old. read: had been used for bucket racing for ~18 years) So we ramped up the development.
Originally it was going in a TZ125 frame I had picked up from Japan. The Crazyman (after much convincing) started my TZR250 project (which just happened to fit the TZR125/100 as well).
Finished in time for the Taupo GP last year (in fact the Friday before driving up was the first run; after getting back from my honeymoon); and while I finished the 2011GP well down the order; i was one of the few Two strokers left running.... :woohoo:
The last 10 months have been sorting out all the little issues with an unknown build; incremental improvements...
so HUSA hows the NSR coming along?:innocent:

1994 was my first GP at Ohakea; not old enough to drink by a long shot (but have a memory of sitting in the mess afterwards)..:innocent:
Right the answer to the question about the TZR100:
Jan 2010 the wooden box arrived from the UK (from long term storage).
April-june 2010 the piston sorted and sleeve done.
September 2010 head machined for insert.
October2010 frame started
Jan 2011 Frame fitment resolved for TZR100
then the rest was history.
so only a year from ground up. the last year has been slow progress due to other things going on.

Well slowly improved it (following everyones advice)
at least its not a hole any more.
three of the best: (needle lifted one groove to rich it up; while testing)

Servo & ignition
277767277768
we tried to advance it more between 8-10k but didn't really seem to help (didn't take of photo).
servo closed to half open also didn't seem to be significantly different the bottom end; thus set it at half open; to reduce the open/closing required.
comparison to Crazyman's FXR.... more work required

My God its great having a dyno.
But we are still learning the software and the rescaling of the graphs (changes to weather conditions) had me a little stumped; at times we were going backwards...
hence great to over plot Crazymans FXR for a consistent comparison.
So; over the past week Crazyman and myself have been making some changes and have managed to improve things a little (60 odd dyno runs later; toooo very tempting to make gross changes).
Change 1. Session 2
Following Wobs advice better regarding setting up the Ignitech... and bulked up the advance a little and changed the way the servo opens.
Change 2. Session 3
Modified the stinger tube (added in a reducer, stepping it down to 20mm ID from 24mm ID).
it is still a standard RS125 pipe & it seems to still be only recording ~400 degrees in the header; so there is still work to be done I think (more reading to be done about this).
Change 3. Session 3
Swaped to a modified 31mm PWK (re-profiled bell mouth) and improved the response in the mid range (worked on finding the correct pilot, needle & main jet combo).
Session 2. Sunday vs. last week
277995
Session 3. So here's a comparison with the best run we achieved monday night:
277993
And well the target is Crazymans FXR so here's the slow improvements:
277994
Still got a hole; but its slowly getting better as we uncover the different issues.
Staggering to think that I've been racing this around for nearly a year in this state. But at least it has forced me to ride harder in the corners and sort out myself..

Seeing there has been a lot of debate on rules and such, time for me to revert to enjoying Buckets for what it is.
So being the least motorcycle sports minded of the Griffiths boys, I am building (along with grateful help from my bro the Crazyman) a new FX125/FXR 150 hybrid.
It's only a hybrid because I am using leftovers from another FXR in the shed, and a Suzuki FX125 scooter that I picked up for nicks (this is my donor engine). First thing of note is that outwardly the engine seems the same, but once out of the scooter and being "negotiated" into it's new home, it became apparent that the oil cooler is mounted ever so slightly higher in the scooter and will need dropping down, more annoyingly was the fact that the engine sprocket only protrudes about half the distance out from the engine as an FXR's one does!
Combination of work on the front sprocket to bring it outwards, and the rear hub to move the rear sprocket inboard , should account for this and get me good chain alignment again.
(Just noting all this as we go for anyone who finds themselves doing a similar experiment).
My donor fuel tank is dented and has the "Swiss cheese" factor along the bottom, some work to do there!
Otherwise it is worth noting that the usual alterations and disc grinder work is going to happen soon, remove all the Mig wire strands that are poking out of the usual FXR frame! Work so far amounts to 4 hours. Nice for anyone who wonders how long a build might take, and I am a novice at this.
In the long run the engine will get worked, for now I want to use it under powered as is (13hp on Dyno). Better to work on good racing technique then to have it all from day one in my view! You learn how to get the most out of an under powered bike before the move to something better.
Interestingly, an FX125 has a five speed box, with slightly different gearing in 3rd and 4th from memory, might prove good on smaller tracks, but will struggle at Taupo me thinks!
Couple of photos, me and my boys, and the FX125.

Easy fix, I assume it's the usual. Lie the bike down on its side, take off the RH engine cover, put the selector forks back in the right place. Reassembly is a simple reversal of the dis assembly process.
But you knew all that.

If you saw what I wrote into the paper and what they have written you would cry! What a complete and utter balls up!
I have rung up the Standard and given them a blast, and they (I hope) will change the write up online. I told them that Palmerston North had more National Titles then any other part of the country, and somehow they wrote they we had 10 titles and were better then everyone else put together! I almost cried.
My apologies, if you saw my write up compared with theirs you would see no resemblance at all. I am off to hang myself! :(
I hope they at least amend the online one.

I'm wondering:
a) how your GPR FXR bike isn't ridiculously loud? (unless the exhaust has been changes since this photo)
b) why the exhaust is quite long? Compared to an estimate from this calculator (http://www.mez.co.uk/mezporting/exhaust_length.html) based on "Four-stroke Performance Tuning by Graham Bell". I'd love to know more where possible :D

I know when I built my exhaust it was discussed, but it never happened. Something about scavanging and pressure realease, or energy waves, meh somthin like that.
From what I read after that I link the same affect can be achieved in a different way, but my memory is way sketcy on the details.
Daves comment is probally the most acurate one. That and it somthing to wank on about int the pits.

Those stickers sure make it look fast LOL
I have posted how the bombs work before plus the other style canisters but the biggest gains are... they are a little quieter.
Trainee at work just bought himself some Ti valves for his CRF i tried to tell him it an't going to make him as fast a fixing the leaking suspension would, but obviously wasn't as cool.
I don't think he has noticed yet he will need new guides and seats yet either (springs and retainer too likely as well lol)

Best way to make your dirt bike faster? Spend the time riding it instead of snickering it up. My poor old 2001 400exc looks like shit, didn't't stop me peeling past a guy on a mint 08 version of the same bike that was six months old at the time. He mentioned it to a mutual friend along the lines of "guy on a seriously ratty old one of these just made me look stupid" response was "yeah I think I know him, has cut most of the tracks in this part of the forest and spent way too much time riding here" shiny shit doesn't make you faster, just makes your bike heavier.

too true; my lovely old 98 SX125 untouched since new (apart from the required engine works) and showing every year its age; but is a barrel of laughs and use to make a significant number of modern bikes look silly (and probability the best performing bike in the shed)....

Yeah, really is his thing alright, shame about Kieran's little indescretion at the start, but he and Brian certainly had a major collision on that front straight, it was good to see them both bounce back up in a hurry, quite the crash!
Did not get Regan's big off in the second race, but I will see what he captures on his onboard camera, you'll notice that Regan just disappears from the footage a few laps in, he is in fact standing at the end of the main straight after a real stinger of a fall, bet his knee ain't to flash today! Notice too that there is no such thing as team orders in our camp either, as Crazyman and Reg almost have a coming together at the end of the front straight on the first lap (half hour till that footage is posted).
See ya all soon.

Crash protection Option: Fairings.... it seems to me that even nylon will cause issues as the bigger the impact (on the smaller number of points) the bigger the mess.
lets make up some rotary moulded fairings and spread the impact load. nice simple shape like these Metrakits Pre125; but make them 4 panels so they can be replaced easily.
Add this to the swingarm covers & top triple clamp covers; that we have discussed..
Sounds like another winter project.
Weight... who give 2 F##ks if we can't race on tracks then we have 80kgs of wasted weight anyway....

http://www.motormadrid.com/fotos/metrakit/preGP_125_2006.jpg
OK so for my next bit of thinking is track damage...
As a group of riders we are all responsible for this happening. so we need to come up with a solution that we can offer up when by chance (and all best intentions) the worst happens.
The repair option that comes to mind is some form of epoxy or rubber sealing compound that can be used to not only fill the gouge but bond the side surfaces to reduce the risk of further "break away" asphalt.
it might be worth looking into something like this:
https://pass.partsmaster.com/webimages/miscfiles/DownloadLink/EntertainMega-Patch.pdf
or have a look at the AK10 (rubber compound melter); don't think this would offer any grip...
http://www.asphaltkingdom.com/video-center.html
Ramsets two pot epoxy:
http://www.ramset.co.nz/products/products_constructionchemicals_crack_injection.htm l
polyurea joint filler (designed to be mixed with dried aggregates to form a textured fill):
http://www.chemcosystems.com/ccs_grouts.html
More to come on this topic

The aftermath of Roys Hill; a cold (not enough Port or rum me thinks) and a gearbox fill of yoghurt (a stuffed impossible to find waterpump shaft seal) which explained the over heating and filled catch bottle.
The engine has been removed and stripped again this week (I should just come back from racing and pull the engine out as a matter of course).
Managed to find some smaller seals at SKF Palmerston North (right on closing; big ups to the only staff member there, whom stayed open and solve the problem on a Saturday).
Afternoon spent machining up a shim to accept the smaller seal size and making new gaskets (thanks Crazyman for the Lathe).
Small adjustment to the Barrel (lifted to sort out the transfers) and modification to head to suit
Motor back in the frame. Half the bolts left to tighten up then back on the dyno to reduce the HOLE some more....
gotta love buckets... :headbang:
SideNote: Friday night there was a very happy man (will remain nameless) from Wellington; whom picked up his newly built GPR150 motor (from GPR headquarters) and did a few Dyno runs after installing it in his frame. Sounds great and performed smack on the targeted output (with big broad torque curve with real punch down low)... I suspect he will be in A-grade very soon (I'm not going back to Welly until he is)....

Looks like it is F4 or nothing then. Sidecar and 50 a non starter, shame, but I think Regan is happier concentrating on his favourite machine.
Still going to be a lot of fun and I think that F4 race will be a cracker!

What Husa is suggesting is that you lovely frames are nicer than someone elses.... :niceone:
no rear tire no 50 coming . need a 18inch rear , front l can put a 17 rg wheel on it . think the bike was made to go strate and not around corners going of the crazy fork angle
Pull the 50 out and put it in my frame (grab my other swingarm and make some mounts)....

not in karting no.
Was a cost saving exercise. People were doping up already stupidly sticky kart tyres & using them for one race, now have to be limited to 1 new set a meeting.

We are really happy with the results, Regan even said he was nervous of this one! That first dive into the top corner was a real make or break moment.
Scott is equally delighted, you could throw a blanket over the first two for just about the entire 30 laps of that Formula Tokoroa race!
Real big ups to all the Auckland folks who put this on, it was a true success. Though I'm not sure what it is about you lot that you feel you have to climb every bloody thing that points up from the ground!!! King Kong Camille swatting planes out of the pine tree (no shit), and the usual lets get sozzled and climb the nearest tall thing you can find!!
Sweet weekend, videos and photos are going through a different process this time, and I think Koba, Rich and myself will collude on knocking up a disc or two with all the different footage captured. Keep you all posted on that one.

I think whomever booked the weather did pretty good, a bit cooler would've been better, but could live with that, rather than what is looming lol
I'd hoped I could get my head into a better space but figured that watching paint dry was more fun than riding, and the thought of having to wait however long for Henk to lap me a second time was too much agony as he hadn't lapped me the first time, and I hadn't even done 10 laps. It seemed like a practice session, and as I wasn't having any joy with different lines, could not get my brain to move my braking markers, I just needed to get the hell off the track and out of my leathers.
formula Tokoroa was the best race, and well done to the top two on your clean passing, even though some of it looked a bit hairy for those being passed, it was awesome.
Oh, thanks also to everyone for cleaning up after yourselves, much appreciated. Only thing I figured was stupid was me not putting rubbish bags in the toilets, instead of having to empty the bins into bags at the end of the day yesterday.

Regan's onboard took only a few minutes of film before expiring, so several minutes warming up and getting on the grid, and the grand total of only one minute of the race! It is a forward facing shot of the start and that is good enough for me!

It might seem a downer to mention this but we really do need to be on top of protecting tracks if we want to keep on doing this.
The pics show quite a few more bike lacking even basic protection, go nuts guys/gals protect everything, all axle ends need nylon, 'bars and pegs are normally protected but make sure its good. Another area I notice lacking is gear/brake foot levers, make them nylon or something.

Its a shame, i do note that it appears you have started numbering the frames though Scott (first PIC)
In the Mini MX at least you can apply to the mnz for Holomogation based on 10 bikes (http://www.mnz.co.nz/regulations/rules/homologations---mini-motorcycles).
What an utterly ridiculous rule.
So who's going to bore and stroke a 2006 Honda RS250 to 400cc
No just a production frame not the engine; no you can build up a old RZ with very expensive aftermarket big bore kits and/or find a quad engine and put it into a RS250 production frame; But you can't do the old fashion Kiwi thing and build your own frame and slot in a +20 year old 250cc road production motor brought for $20...
But you can slot in a stinky heavy 4 stroke 650 into a one off special frame... Rules damn...
The entire build (not including Crazy man's time) would have only added up to < $2k (RS125 Forks, wheels, rear end, fairing + controls, ignitech, pipes and pistons).
but it is built and can be used in other forms and parts can be used in other projects...
I think the frame needs to be production based, so RS250 is OK GPR is not so OK
5 Specifications for up to 400cc two stroke production based machines:
The machine must be based on a production motorcycle. No homologation is necessary however the Road Race Commission or Technical Steward shall have the power to rule whether or not a machine is eligible.
yip; thats the catch. based on a production motorcycle...
Its a shame, i do note that it appears you have started numbering the frames though Scott (first PIC)
In the Mini MX at least you can apply to the mnz for Holomogation based on 10 bikes (http://www.mnz.co.nz/regulations/rules/homologations---mini-motorcycles).
All the bikes have been numbered. but not sure if that would wash as each frame has a different intended purpose/engine/size etc.
but given there might be 10 frames by the end of the year...
Not sure whom would give a two hoots anyway (I have been told to turn up with it at club level; likely as I suck and would only be making up numbers).. someone has to come last.:wait:
It was more of a diversion from where the other conversation was going,,,,

But isn't the GPR frame based on the RS125 NX4 frame? That is a production frame isn't it? One could use the arguement that your frame is based on the RS125 frame which is a production frame and therefore fits the (dumb) rule.

You can put an up to 500cc two stroke single into it....Flettner got enough bits for another Bighorn motor ?
As an aside I've built 13 Aermacchi replca frames now - maybe I should apply for homologation....lol.

Well its been a few months away from posting (mainly due to life sh!t getting in the way and crazyman getting chased off the KB forum)...
Anyway; the GPR workshop has been humming. And seems as I'm now back from overseas; I thought I'd post up a few photos.
Crazyman has finished his new GPR150-008 2013(and had a play at the last wellington round).

The Sister bike is my new toy another GPR150-009 2013
Some would say I've seen the light; I say I'm temporarily blinded by actually finishing a days racing without a headache...
The TZR100 has gone under the bench until I can figure out what to do with the slipped sleeve.
This also allows me to build up my 250 track toy to play with Crazyman's SXV550...

So; should see you all shortly and roll on summer.

Send me a pic of the Stud spacing on the TZR Brent i might have something to suit here:msn-wink:.....
but I am guessing your sleeve wasn't shouldered then?
Come on it only KB Scott wasn't chased off was he? he just got in an argument with Robert .. Doubt he was the first that's done that.
I am guessing they were both fueled up on ethanol as well....
