Look after the knee Flash.

102kg for the Beta not bad, 2t's aren't dead just been sleeping in a bit long

Cool video Mark, that KX 500 smoked em. A mate that I ride with has one he brought back from the good ol U S of A in a crate and lovingly restored it. I used to be good at starting big single 2T's in my youth (air cooled) but I couldn't start his, and I really tried. My Beta has a button + kick, I like the button.

Is that Kyle ? You'd be surprised that a KX5 has a compression of only 8.3:1 which lowers to 7.4:1 when the powervalve kicks in. Should be easier to kick over than an old school XR600 though. Problem with the KX500 is the kick back when it's a bit rich. You'd kick one over easily.

And always wear boots . I ended up in A&E a while back when I tried firing up mine with runners on. It kicked back and cost me 20 stitches in my calf, ouch.

Yep is Kyle's bike, we swapped bikes for a while, I stalled it and my stuffed knee didn't have the power to kick it over fast enough to start it, he started it and I was off (carefully)

Cheers pete, I went out weeden's on Sunday and rode the legal tracks. About five hours all up. My knee is great. Getting dragged out riding tomorrow, heading up country I'm told. I'm just the passenger, looking forward to it.

Hey Flash,
Pleased to hear you are already back on the bike.

Mate, you missed nothing yesterday.......... (riding that is, the views were cool)

Well, unless you like rocks, 4WD tracks and dust, and then in that case you missed a great ride lol

I did two loops and then left at lunch time, first loop was "ok" being one of the first out, the 2nd loop, the dust just killed it for me.

I'm not uploading the full loop, but here is a short bit of what you didn't miss out on.

Cheers for that Deanzo, You are correct, that's not what I enjoy.
I have found that most rides on high country properties usually involve lots of tracks and not much riding on the land. My favorites are the rolling hill country farms, using little or no tracks at all, with forestry thrown in.
Saturday was a huge day. I was told, don't worry Flash we won't be doing anything to put your knee at risk, well fuck me, parts of it were almost like extreme enduro, helping each other getting the bikes through knarly area's with some of the hardest riding I have ever done. Some downhill's were so steep I had to slide down beside my bike (Beta) and the climb's had me wondering how I got up them.
After all the abuse of the day my knee never gave me pain. But I was knackered.
Spent this afternoon riding out at weedon's again (legal tracks) all in the effort to improve fitness and strength. Knee is still great. Knee braces are perfect.
I will be at the Conway coast ride 21st Feb. I'm told it's a good ride, even a ride along the beach yee ha. Hope to see you all there.

Yes the 498 is awesome for opening the tap and going buuuuuuut I started the day of at 165cm tall and finished about 167cm, well at least my arms did.

Yes the Xtrainer is cheating but when you are a short arse like me it is far go.

Here you go Paul, I was riding one just like this when I was 15, my legs were shorter then no problem. From memory it had a suzuki TC 100 motor and with the high low ratio box and aggressive tractor style tyres it would go anywhere. Bloody hilarious fun.

Donations, well your the lucky one, my brothers were never that generous or trusting. You'll get hooked once again.
Are they both runners? Or is one for parts ? Either way that's great news.

One is a 1990 which needs a throttle cable and front brake caliper/master cylinder to be a runner and is pretty manky, the other is a 96 in better condition which is all go

The brake caliper is the same 89-96 and common to a lot of Suzuki models along with the master cylinder so shouldn't be to hard to source

I was looking for a YZ front master cylinder for a mate, plenty around but bloody costly considering the age of the bikes they come off. Best of luck with that, but with one runner, no hurry for you.

I had a nose around (not on bike) last Monday and it was very low. Soft shingle patches are more of a problem in the Waipara usually, but probably more so for things for 4 wheels than two ;)

Not sure on access problems these days (a google will probably answer that) but carrying on up to the gorge is a nice trip.

flashg
13th February 2016, 13:18
Heading up the gorge is private land and private river. There are council signs up past where the old waipara pub was, stating this. The farmers have had fences across the river with stock camped in the river bed.
And when it's all over the news about the state of Amberley water supply, you gotta wonder if stock in the river bed is the problem. But they are allowed it seems. Different rules and all that.

Didn't realize it was that bad. Had my finger a little bit more on the pulse on O.R.E a few years back.

Stock in waterways is illegal as fuck.

There is some accommodation place up there that was trying to turn the gorge into their own private retreat at one point from memory. Rumour was they went as far as to move some of those round boulders about too. Might be different owners now.

Just looked it up access wise though:

http://www.waiparariver.org.nz/manage2.html

Any fence across the river should warrant some action going off that...

Anyway, that's further north than SH1, which is a good spin.

flashg
13th February 2016, 14:42
We on bikes are allowed access basically from SH1 to the beach legally (that's what the signs indicate), but many bikes sneak up to the gorge. The farmers have had taranaki gates in those temporary fences that cross the river for 4x4 access last year. Although I don't know if the fences went up this year. Someone may have got a smack on the wrist tut tut.

From Stringers Bridge up to the gorge IS public access by either the paper road up the river or navigable waterways act, I have had run ins with them in the past, they claim all sorts of shit but that's all it is.

Check this web site, http://wams.org.nz/wams_desktop/index.aspx on the left menu go to public access areas, Road (formed and Unformed), also check Hydro Areas furhter down the page.

Some good info on where you can and cant go.

There are many paper roads through farm land which if you really wanted to prove a point you could however out of respect for a working farm contacting the landowner is the only way I would approach that.

I think they might have another winner, YZ 250X 2t different state of tune than the MX model (for cross country) WR gearbox (wide ratio) plus a side stand. And KYB suspension tuned for cross country. That should tick the boxes for many.

A carb clean and change of plug got it going a bit better but it still doesn't have the punch I'd expect from a 250 though so still might not be quite right, off for a small ride with some friends tomorrow, need to get some better body armour and make up a tool kit for it, that'll have to wait a few weeks until Nationals are over

Good stuff. Remember it's the enduro model. I would expect it won't have the performance of the MX model, but it should have low down torque without the real hard hit up top. Perfect for trail rides with wide ratio gear box

Definitely something not right, spent about 2.5 hours riding it today with a DRZ400 and CRF230 for company and playing swapsies, CRF230 was actually the most fun to ride

Conway was my first organised trail ride and incidentally first time riding hills. It was quite a lot of fun, once I got the bike on top of the sand.

What I was really happy with is how everyone seemed to be quite friendly. I got help after binning it on the steep narrow downhill section and also got a hand when I put the front wheel into a ditch.

The final cool thing was getting some great advice on tying the bike to the trailer, it worked so much better than what I had done originally.

All round was a great morning, thanks guys.

Well I said to the guys because I am on the Beta 500 with road kit and road gearing I will see what the Extreme Enduro Deviation was like and may not do it...... but anyway..... I did it and it was F&%king hard, harder than the Nutbuster, my pink frock needed a serious boost to get me through so we did one lap and that was the end of my frock completely.

The shingle scree was very steep so bulldogged the bike down that, then I was frocked out, stalled the bike and tried hiding it is the bushes but didn't do a great job of that either

Yes I know how hard that was as I was talking to Jeremy (white YZ450) and he had done them all. After that talk. I knew it was outside my skill level so stuck to the main loop.
Your excuses for leaving early are acceptable all things considered. I just had to drink some of my ice cold beer by myself.

Thanks Flash I will sleep tonight with your approval

Jesus wept…..Extreme Enduro…..forget the pink frock Paul…I was packing pink panties (Try saying that fast) and they got ripped to shreds.

Now….I new this “Extreme Enduro” section was coming…how hard could it be I was thinking… wanting to venture into some enduro in the future, the Husa + pilot was keen as mustard…bring it on.

I nearly died.

We managed 2 of the three Enduro sections + Extreme….another lap, again 2 of the Enduro sections but no Extreme…got back to the pits and I was done…

Felt alittle flat driving home….maybe I’m not ready..:(

Be interested in hearing any comments about the Extreme section, how hard was it? I haven’t had the balls yet to do a real Enduro, so its hard to know?

Funny, I was in Superior Motor cycles today, or should I say traction- if you haven’t already herd…guys asked me "How was your weekend” great I said, did the trail ride including the Extreme loop…yeah herd about that…apparent it wasn’t that hard? ….I was like WHAT……they laughed!

Well the Nut Buster which is only about 4 kms north of where we were and is the same sort of terrain, the extreme enduro loop on Sunday was what you would expect at the Nut Buster except the Nut Buster is like that for 26kms with very little respite, is it a test for your technical riding skills but more importantly you fitness level because when you get that tired even small shit gets hard.

Well guy's & girl's, and pink frock wearers, last weekend I managed to get to pleasant point trail ride. Weather was perfect again, this time there were two red loop's, totaled 79 km's. Which we managed slowly as I was with son and grandson. I would have loved to do a lap on my own, especially the 33 km loop as it had a great hill climb on it. I was on the beta 300 2t easy as. My son rode my WR 450 as he's waiting for a new chain guide for his EXC 450. Anyway coming up the big hill in second gear on the back wheel most of the way on purpose is what I call being a skite. Anyway we had a great day, it was a long way to travel though, and for that reason alone, I might not do it again.
Pigeon bay trail ride next weekend, who's going ?

Well might be a bit before the RMX is out, in the quest for the missing power I pulled the top off it, powervale is rubbing on the piston, $450 for a new powervalve assembly, piston has some massive wear on the exhaust side from the power valve, another $165, it can sit in the shed for a bit until I stop sulking and come up with some cash

Still could be worse it could have caught the piston and destroyed the barrel as well

Fun wee ride in Geraldine today, all be it easy.

My X is waiting on some parts, so took the R out for a laugh.
Man I'm lazy, missed the steering dampner, the X20's with tubliss and the e-start...

Did 4 loops, this was loop 3.
https://youtu.be/yCYrP5SbCvg

Also, if it was a member here that filmed me doing a slow sideways full bike roll over, be keen to see it lol

*Stalled the bike on a side of a hill on wet grass, slid down a little sideways, slid into some tussock (or something) the momentum did the rest..... Doh!

Good stuff, I've been told I have to get out and do another couple soon.

SV Boy what were you riding? Did you have good condition tyres (dirt not ADV) and pressures less than 12psi? That always makes a huge difference over a half worn tyre which is not good or even a good tyre with 15psi is also bad. A lot of guys who cant keep a straight line on hills just have a bad tyre setup, doesn't matter what you run here at the flat Waimak but get mud on a hill :pinch:

Well that was dusty with a few sharp rocks. Got a front end puncture about half way round my first lap but thanks to that Tubliss system I got from the Motomox man I was able to just kept on going. Hardly noticed except on the steeper down hills where the steering felt quite heavy and a bit squirmy.
Back at the car plugged it with a dog turd, much easier fix than messing with a tube, put some air in and off we went for round two.
Should of had the repair kit in my tool kit on the track, I just hadn't got round to taking it out of the big box and putting it in the little bag.

Gave the new gopro mount a whirl too, the chin on (http://www.motomox.co.nz/shop/show_single_product.php?prod=383)e. I like it, picture position is pretty good. The old GoPro HD1 was a little heavy up front at first but I quickly got used to it and was much less annoying than having that weight hanging off the side and catching wind or catching branches up top. Since all the newer cameras are a fraction lighter it should be even better with them.

Anyway a good easy ride for my first in over half a year. Little less dust would have been nice though.

Roll on Omihi trail ride on the 15th which is one I really enjoyed last year.

Yes we did two laps, I am still coughing, sneezing, farting, shitting and spitting dust but we had some fun and I really enjoyed the Beta 300 Xtrainer, it is so much fun to ride, torquay as hell, light as hell, narrow as hell and low seat for short bastards like me, if you are looking for a friendly trail bike to ride put the Xtrainer on your list.

For those that couldn't get to Omihi trail ride today, it was bloody awesome. As the day wore on, the more challenging parts of the track got tougher. The last hill climb became very challenging, many people having a big struggle. I was disappointed to see Fathers taking very young kids on the red loop (for experienced riders) which they struggled with on the little bikes, especially the hill climbs which they blocked off the track for long periods.
On a different part of the track, one guy came off his bike and hurt his shoulder badly I was told. Another guy crashed in the same spot (went over handle bars) and broke both wrists,on his hand guards. He got the helicopter ride. People need to slow down and read the track properly, it's not a fucken race, it's a trail ride.
I managed three laps, total of 139.6 Km's. Biggest day I've had for a long time.
Bring on Glenmark trail ride 12th June. That's my next one.

Wasn't wearing the braces this time(just pads). Am modifying the right brace as it was putting pressure on my lateral ligaments, causing swelling.
Surgeon is keen to wait and see how the left knee copes now it's not doing all the work. At this stage it feel's great. And I'd rather not go through all that again, if it can be avoided.

Now yer have me wondering if it's a diffrent Conway ride?

I thought you done the last one... had the beach section
at the start... one part you could look down on the main Rd through the hundlees...
there was alot of bulldozed tracks..but not newly bulldozed...

Shame it's not running like it should, but you'll sort it no doubt.
+1 what Pete said and it must have been a little of what you remembered, others told me there were some parts they remembered but not much. I did the two enduro deviations ( never crashed). At one point I could see the traffic on the hundalees !!!! Well I think it was. Anyway we had a great day with lots of variety and fantastic views.

That was "conway coast" trail ride, which was bloody awesome. Shame Pete.
I've never done this ride "conway hills. Someone we all know and trust did it last year (winter) and wasn't impressed. His words were "A long way to travel to ride on bulldozed tracks" And probably wouldnt do it again. He also wasn't impressed with the Enduro deviations.

I've done conway hills the past two years, yea it's a bit boring, that and my mate on his 450 just leaves me like Im standing still on this ride.
Big long easy (boring) climbs around the hills, with GREAT views!

Last year, at least it was covered in snow at the top, and that 10 mins was kind of cool.

It wasn't the ride I've previously done, this one we turned left before the overbridge and went about 1km beside the railway tracks to the start, the last one I did years ago we started at the old Conway School out by the coast

40km loops and probably 90% farm tracks

I wasn't really feeling the love for it after loop one but when we sped it up a bit on loop 2 it became more fun, dropped it 25km in and broke the clutch which meant 15km riding back without it

It was an ok ride but I wouldn't drive that far to do it again

I went round the main loop twice. Good thing all that clay was not mud! My mate dubbed another rider about 20kms back to the car park when his CRF 450 locked solid! Two up, doing that downhill, fuck that for a game of soldiers! The brakes of his yz250 were cooked when he got back!

I saw a CRF lying on the edge of the track but no rider in sight on our second lap

How did you find the big downhill where it turned off the track and went down the ridgeline?

I was liking some of the big uphill climbs pulling 3rd or 4th and in the powerband

Except they're taller, heavier, don't change directions as easily, don't think I've ever been so fucked, Yamapig is what I called it

I know what you mean about where the weight is. Mine is 2012 injected and shares the YZ 250 chassis, it's smaller and more nimble. It's not much taller than the Beta, and has a shorter wheel base when you see them on the trailer together. So it's nice and quick in the steering.
Good luck tomorrow.

Cheers for that, I might do it yet, my son is still keen.
I'm a bit slack with torque settings, but there are areas where I don't risk it. My XTZ 660 that I sold had a knock coming from within. It was the nut on end of crank not torqued up correctly from factory. I torqued it up, and it was perfect after that.

Yes a good day indeed. 1st lap I rode the Beta 300 and had no off's and no problems anywhere, bloody awesome.
Back at the car number two son convinced me to ride the WR 450 on lap two. The Aussie map was probably not the best choice for today as it's rather abrupt and aggressive. I didn't have the power tuner with me to change it. So off we went on lap two, all was going great until some tree roots thought otherwise, and off I went. I hit ground hard on my shoulder, nothing broken, but I'm struggling to lift my arm just now. Just so you know it happened when I wasn't expecting it.
On the second lap the hill climbs got much harder as the ground broke up and exposed more and more tree roots. Lots of riders struggling to get up these climbs with bikes and riders stuck at various stages up the hills. Somehow age and wisdom helped me and I made all the climbs on my first attempt without incident.
So all n all a great day

Well it seems I survived another day riding, yay.
After doing the first lap and one enduro deviation on the Beta RR300, We swapped bikes and I rode the WR 450 for lap two.
We thought it'd be a good idea to do all three normal enduro deviations this lap. ( leaving the extreme one for experts)
So the first was short and not too difficult. The second took us down a steep fence line down to the river ( dalethorpe forest on the other side) I think it was four times we crossed that river (quite deep) filled our boots a little, not bad at all. The final one was tough, it was at the limit of my ability and I was getting buggered. One part was more than I could manage and a really nice guy rode the WR up that bit, the rest I managed on my own.
All n all a tough but rewarding day.
Bring on "Murry Downs" next month.

Getting sorted for Amberley next weekend, fork seals are done, barkbusters fitted, added a bash plate and the new carb seems to work pretty well with a bit better throttle response, should be going even faster when I crash now

What carb did you put on it? The stock PJ is a piece of shit

I didn't find the stock PJ that bad, I fitted a 38mm Keihein PWK airstriker I got off ebay which I'd bought before I worked out it was a powervalve/piston problem

Since found out it's a copy but from the little riding I've done on it so far it seems to work good with the PJ needle and main jet fitted

Lets get this back on topic guys!

Who did the Amberly trail ride? if you didn’t- dam did you mist a bloody good ride!!!!

Weather was perfect - even Mr wippy turned up !!! would have been at least 300+ bikes easy..

Apart from the abomination of scrutineering …I mean, one guy at 9.30?…you got be joking….at this point the wild map was selected…..fan came on and I new the bike was getting hot…had nothing to do with the rather attractive girl sitting in front on me….long brown hair…..dirt bike……long brown hair ……dirt bike…..I found myself in some kind of a trance - before I new it, I felt a rod up the pipe and a tap on the shoulder and I was done…..I mean gone…..…third…Jesus watch the trees…forth……corner…turn……nothing but sunshine!

yes it was open….but the forestry sections were something else…..I think in some ways better than dalethorpe….we had a bloody ball…

We managed 3 full laps- including the two Enduro sections…first one was nothing to be worried about - the second was a little more challenging, but again nothing to extreme.

Over the past few years - Jesus I’ve got myself in a few predicaments….absolutely exhausted…...whistling down hills out of control….stuck in shitty bogs giving the bike arseholes….shoot me now -take the fecking bike- I didn’t want it - I’m done…..we all have our war stories…….and we all get tired…and with that self dealt creeps in.

But what I found is I’m now looking at the enduro sections and thinking……I can do this….I really think confidence plays a major part….and with that comes a big gain in your technique. But without giving it ago…you’ll never know….because you didn’t develop the skills in the first place! I mean anyone can go fast, its just a matter of twisting the throttle….so the next time you see some blue arrows…think to ya self - I can do this..!!!!!!

Yours wasn't the one with steam pissing out of it ? Couldn't fucking believe they only had one person there on the gate

I only did two main loops plus one kids loop with a mates boy while he did did the main loop

One off, short steep rutty climb and got the front sideways and lay down, dragged the front wheel around back to the bottom and straight up

Another climb the guy in front of me was going slower than I'd like and stopped which meant I had to as well, what an arse gwtting going again, nothin to hard and a reasonable mix of terrain

Well Pete you made up your mind and missed a perfect day. The moisture in the soil was spot on, which meant no dust, it was warm but not too hot. I managed three laps and no deviations, speedo says about 106 km's. It seemed like heaps of forest, (better than dalethorpe) more than I had remembered. Grenville assured me there was nothing extra.
There were heaps of people there, I had to wait a while to get a sausage, but no wait for the double plain ice cream, bloody yuuuuuuum. Was eating it too fast and suffered bloody brain freeze, fuck I hate that.
Anyway it was an excellent day.

DON'T miss the Waipara trail ride, one of my FAVORITES. (Well most of them are really).

Someone said its one of the oldest rides on the calendar.
I've noticed most rides are one way one year then backwards the next (as much as they can be anyway)
Grenville said there is another forest block on that property that may be available in the near future.
How'd that RMX go with the new carb ? Good I hope.

Good, needs some fine tuning which I'll probably never do to get the best out of it

Push your tongue up hard against the roof of your mouth, hard as you can. It took me 43 years to learn that trick. 43 years of fucking brain freeze!

Thanks for that, looking forward to my next ice cream now, just so I can try it. If it works it would've only taken 59 years to learn it, fuck I'm slow.
It only happened because it was melting so fast and I didn't want to lose any, bugger.

How'd you get an email ? I've tried with "my rides" but they said they don't do it any more. They said they just post on Facebook when they are informed of a cancellation.
We checked my rides before we left. No postponement.
So we nearly got there and noticed vehicle's with bikes coming towards us, I said to son, check Grenvilles adventure rides on Facebook, thats when we found it. What a waste of petrol. Gutted.
Roll on next Sunday, I'm still keen as this is a new ride.

120 km's today at Omihi trail ride today. Fresh green grass made things interesting, catching a few people out. Weather was kind and not hot, but a little windy on the tops. Number 2 son and I did all the enduro loops and main track three times. First lap saw me on Beta 300 and him on WR 450 where he struggled big time on the enduro loops on the heavier taller bike.
Lap two saw me on WR 450 and him on the Beta 300. No holding him back on that bike and I had no problems either (having longer legs)on a bike I've owned nearly 5 years (its like an old friend that wants to rip my arms off)
Lap 3 saw me still on WR and him not wanting to hand me back my Beta.
Anyway I'm knackered but unhurt as I had no offs.
Great day and good catching up and riding with some of the boys.

Are yes that was funny although I thought if you were sitting on the wire barb wire that would hurt so quick response was the ticket

That was an ok ride, nothing really challenging, the second lap there were a few areas which had a got a lot more slippery and cut up, couple of stupid little offs when I tucked the front end but an ok day

Caught up to one of those quad bike abominations who was a little bit harder to get in front of than I thought, finally passed him in the boggy bit near the end (not that we were racing)
